There are alot of good areas in the province, thier are your costal grizzly that are some times larger, but there colouring and hides arn't as nice as a interior grizzly, a good area in the East Kootenay's is the FlatHead area region 4.01 that has the highest consentration of interior grizzly in North America, the only problem is access because of amount of snow fall and timing of spring melt off on the roads, best time to hunt there is the end of May to June 5, this is just one area of hundreds in the province.

I harvested this big 8 1/2 foot griz in the East Kootenay's in 2006.

I seen quite a few grizz in the Adams over the years. As far south as Scotch Creek all the way up to the top reaches of the Tum Tum. Not an easy hunt by any means, but one can have a blast hunting black bears while you search for the elusive grizz.

Will put in for one although l am still have this year to go with "enhanced odds" from a hunt a couple of years ago.
Don't know whether to stay within striking distance of home (higher odds) or apply in a more remote area where the odds are better but the cost of the hunt are usually higher....

Yeah, I put in for the adams. It is the closest area for me.

What can one expect the cape and head of a grizzly to weigh?

(somehow I doubled this thread! OOps.)

longhairmtnman,

The cape/head on a grizzly can vary by weight just like you. I would guess some are 60 lbs while others are 180 lbs. I took a big (8' +) fall bear a few years back in a creek and I thought it was the end of my hunting days! Pack weighed in at 158 lbs (I was 170 at the time) and the hike back to the road was pretty darn long in the dark with felt boots on across rough terrain. The pack was all bear and nothing else! Keep the hide dry and your body will thank you! The reality is when you get a grizz you don't really think about the weight.
