Hey I just opened a thread on this a little while ago shouldn't be to far down the list in the gear section. i had a lot of the same questions and there are some good choices on the page to look at. It was a hard decision but, i realized that peoples eyes are different as well some glass didn't look as clear to me and they did my friend beside me.
Cheers Moe.

I am a Craigslist hound and I found my Zeiss and a pair of Swarovski EL for great prices from urban bird watchers. Great deals for quality hardly used glasses. You will never understand or appreciate how crucial good optics are until you're out in 4 point season, low light conditions and cant be sure of that 4th point. We have a couple pair of Bushnell and Nikon good quality and the kids fight us to use the good ones. Save up for longer and buy them used - you wont regret it!

I have the vortex HD's as well, but someone mentioned to be patient and surf craigs list, ebay etc for a used pair. That really is the way to go if you have the time and patience. Not very often, but sometimes you can locate a high end pair that is very well priced used.

A couple years ago i bought the vortex diamondbacks, They were great, and all i could afford.
This year i found a smoking deal on CGNutz. i upgraded to the vortex viper HD. A huge difference. And i was able to sell my diamondbacks on here for a decent price.
Its obvious to say get what you can afford.. There are deals out there, but few and far between. The guy i bought mine from was upgrading, then i sold mine cause i was upgrading, so it does happen.
but I love the Vortex brand, great quality and a rock solid warranty.

Zeiss's new line. Terra. They retail a little over $400. They are very nice for the price

I see the Zeiss Terra have very good reviews online, and the 8x42 for 349.00 and the 10x42 for 399.00

Also Look at the Minox BL 8 or 10x42 made in Germany model for $300.00, very good lightweight compact binocular for the money,

The Vortex Viper HD for about 650.00 is very clear, but for that price I would jump up to the Zeiss

Then in the 900-1000 price range check out the Zeiss Conquest HD,best bino for the money in that price range, I use a Leica Trinovid BA 10x42 and the Zeiss is noticeably brighter and clearer and about 4oz lighter.

I use some 8x42 Alpens (shasta Ridge model)... great optics .... I would line them up with any other 8x42 model on the market including Ziess ... 3-4 hundy is what you expect to pay for them

Does anyone use Kowa? I know their spotters get great reviews but their bino's seem to lack a following.

Nikon Monarch 10x42, rock solid for $400

Ditto, but buy them in the US from Cabelas, Nikon has a no fault warranty that they will repair/replace. I had the eyecups on my Monarchs screw up, Nikon Canada said they would sell me a new pair, Nikon US repaired at no cost.

Cameraland in NY.. Google and check them out... All brands and if you go to the DEMO section you may afford something in the higher end without Kowa, Vortex, God forsake Bushnell, etc.. "I'm an optic snob nothing but the big three" . Stretch the budget, you won't be sorry in the long run..

Top of the line Zeiss or Swarovski are the best. But if you want good glass for 5% of the price look for Nikon Travelite EX. If you can't find EX look for the new version which is even cheaper but has the same glass. The new version is not water proof though. The price does not get any better- $74:

I picked up a pair of Meopta Meostar HDs for $800 on Ebay, they're 99% the excellence of the Big 3 for a grand less. You can read reviews on them at Cabelas.com, where they're sold as the Euro HD, or on bird watching sites. They're made in the Czech Republic, next door to Austria, in the same way and with the same materials...you're just not paying for a world renowned brand name.
