Not the top but a rocky, shale side slope that has some bluffs in it for bedding. That buck flipped over the rocks that are in the top of the picture and landed like that with his head backwards. I have many other good photos of that day but they are his to share and he is not on the forum anymore. The picture doesn't do the angle justice, it was hard to stand and even take the photo. The shale was shallow and solid rock was below the surface so keeping footing was a problem. A great hunt regardless.

Interesting buck, Nimrod. What happened to his passenger side?

Nimrod
12-12-2020, 05:38 PM
Had a long lateral break just above the brow, looks like it happened after velvet cam off.
No real clues as to how his other side was quite solid, if it was fighting I'd love to run into the winner next year.

Great bucks there guys! Hey Nimrod in the pic it looks like a WT rack but has a darker forehead and more of the colouring of a mule deer, was he indeed more of a hybrid?

Nimrod
12-14-2020, 05:55 AM
If so it doesn't show in his rack.
Between my hunting partner and I we've taken some darker WT from this area.

Mine is a little less spectacular, but as a guy that has only been hunting a few years and is 95% focused on hunting upland over my three bird dogs, it is a special one as it’s my first deer. And unfortunately my phone was in my pack down at a power line so I didn’t take a photo until I got him down to the road, so it’s not exactly “as he lay”, but he was on that side, just uphill in some greenery.

Yeah, my first. I guess I’m a late bloomer as I’ve only really spent more than a couple of days chasing deer for the past 3 seasons. I have carried my 7-08 bolt gun a few times but as a lifelong lever fan I really wanted to shoot my first deer “oldschool”. Although this Marlin (Remlin) is the “2020 .30-30”, it is still a great gun. It really loves the Barnes TSXs too.

That's happens from time to time, more then people think!!
At least you left it alone!!!
There was an asshat last season that took a small deer, and then must of seen a big buck some seconds later, and killed it
as well.
Left the little one to rot, and took very little from the big one as i guess he was worried he would get caught, so 2 dead animals
left to rot just for some bigger antlers.

Good on you!
And it certainly makes for a once in a lifetime "photo" that you got yourself there!

I actually jumped in the boat and pushed off from shore right after this pic was taken. I got a great video drifting right up within 50 feet of it. My partner got a good video of me drifting right down to the bull too.

Why couldn’t it have been 2 weeks earlier in bow season when I was up there…? Lol.

The 2nd weekend of November some of us decided to go to the family cabin for some time away. I grabbed the rifle for ‘just in case’ but had no real plans to go out hunting. We left early Friday to stay two nights and planned on coming home Sunday evening. Sunday afternoon we discovered we would be there indefinitely due to the coquihalla hwy landslides and brutal hwy conditions elsewhere….our cabin is north of quilchena. Long story short we were stuck there 12 days. On my 8th day there my brother in law and I went out for a drive to see what we could see for animal sign. I wasn’t optimistic but it had recently snowed 8” and there was sign all over the roads. Spent 4 hrs driving around the back country 30km passed the cabin and saw nothing but a wide variety of tracks…moose bear cougar bobcat deer…even a beaver trail down the road! Evening was approaching and we headed back to the cabin for a pit stop about 15minutes and left again for the last light of the afternoon. Not 2 minutes down the road we came upon a cut block and standing in the middle of it is this guy not 50 yards away. I managed to ignore my knee jerk reaction of slamming on the brakes and proceeded to role down the road as my brother counted out the points. Ken says, “one, two, three, four…HES DEAD!” I jump out the truck and smoked his front shoulder with the .308. The next 4hrs was spent in -5 temps butchering this muley. I learned a lot that night and was glad I watched Steve Rinellas “how to gut a deer video” multiple times. I am the first hunter in my family and didn’t have a dad or uncle to show me how it’s done so thank you Steve! I was exhausted but couldn’t be happier elbow deep in this deer. Looking forward to next year. Going to be hard to find another one like him though.

This buck was blind in one eye, had scars, and rips in his neck, head, face, ears, and nose and had a few broken tines and he was still hanging with the girls the day a shot him by mistake. Was after a much bigger buck, had been tracking him for hours and thought I caught up to him in the thick timber, only seen pieces of him and parts of the rack through the binos. Rolled the dice and lost. Was a very good tasting deer surprisingly.

This is the ram that got me hooked. More than 20 years ago. You can see the patches of winter hair clumps still in his hide from the previous year. Really really really old bugger. Heavy, long, old.

He went 13. We shot 3 of the group of 5. 2x 10 year olds, and the 13. Never before and never again have I seen a group like that. All 5 were stompers. I shot the smallest one from the group. I wish we had pulled all 3 rams down together for one picture...

Thanks guys. He was truly a monarch of the mountains. He surprised us just as much as we surprised him. He came over the top right where we were sitting and we had a one minute staredown at thirty yards. Of course, guns were not handy and still attached to our backpacks. A short run later, he took a tumble and ended up here. I've been a part of a couple of dozen harvests, and this one is in the top three. Glad to still have the strength and drive it takes to get the job done. Congrats goes out to my hunting partner; heck of a first ram for him!! The pic doesn't show how steep it is. He is facing head down on the mountain at a 45 degree angle, lol.

Great ram! My trophy isn’t a trophy in that sense, but I called a small bull moose in from around 700yrds in the timber, out across a cutblock and straight at me right to about 15ft. First time ever calling moose no lie. Only moose seen on the entire 10day trip. Other guys In the group saw 6 total wolves, 5 black one silver within 2 km of each other on the road during daylight hours. Unfortunately unable to get a shot off on them. Is put up a picture but it won’t let me from my phone!

Big old black male wolf. Hoped for a black wolf this year!! One of 3 wolves shot yesterday while out hunting with my oldest son. 24 ks of walking, dogging the pack in the fresh snow. There is a bounty where we hunt. Spent the last 2 hours of the day listening to none stop howls as we were in the middle of the split up pack. Was a one of a kind day that I have been fortunate enough to have experienced a few times. Literally hundreds of howls some within less than 100m. Amazing the volume a wolf can put out.

I must be getting old, I felt a bit sad for them.

Nice job on the wolves guys... who else has had success with cow elk or cow moose calls on them?

I saw their tracks in the fresh snow in the dark. I figured they were around. I heard a few howls way off and headed their way. I howled a few times in hopes of engaging them. I came across smoking hot elk sign and switch to a lost cow. They were really eager after that. Good sound carry with a cow elk sound.

Next time I get between a split up pack I will have a coyote howler in my pack,I feel like a few challenge barks or a wounded pup might get them loose. They were spread out and didn’t move at all for the last few hours of the day, just howled and howled.
Had a cow elk work on a cougar before too.

What an incredible experience that must have been!!

Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Thats a bit different kind of 4 pointer. Can’t say I have seem one with that type of configuration. Wonder why he was hanging out in scorched earth. Looks like even the soil got burned. Maybe mushrooms?

He's a regess buck, his teeth are worn thin with missing and broken off fronts. But is very heathly, still has tones of fat on him and is solid.
we were hunting outside the burn an hour from this spot but took a day to check out how impacted this area was. There are sections that didn't burn at all and some where the fire went through slow and didnt get that hot with the canopy untouched, these sections already had lush green growing everywhere, The deer were hitting it hard.
But we still found tonnes of sign in the areas that were nuked, this guy was pestering a doe pretty hard and chased her into there.

My hunting partners big bull he got last weekend. We got him by pushing bush and standing post. Lots of hiking and farting down wind got them moving. Maybe pork and beans are the magic bullet……?

Another beautiful bull, good sized body too.

Mid day, right when we shoot most of the bull elk. Remember, anything can happen and the whole season is good you just have to change up tactics based on time of year and feed. Snow helps a ton. Often referred to as the “great equalizer”. This fellow was still with cows acting like the herd bull he was. I have seen this until the last day of the season here in Northern Alberta, Nov 30, and still quietly bugling. Lots of boots on the ground to find the right set up and make things happen. Sometimes the action doesn’t start until late afternoon, not because they are heading back to feed, it just took that much walking to find the fresh sign and put the puzzle together for the day. And if nothing is found that day, which is rare, that fine too. That is also useful data. Everyday you get schooled is one more for the memory bank.
If it doesn’t come together in the rut, no worries, lots of time to keep at it if you’re local.

Ps, no farts or pants shitting needed, you smell bad enough to an elk already.

pps, works on other game as well. (Walt Prothero, a hunting great used to use his own smelly hunting cloths and gear to do a 1 person drive by hanging them on the downwind side on trees, and hot stepping to the up wind side before the buck pushed out) also 100% success using his “loop method” for tracking. One of the greatest hunters of all time and a great author. Well worth it to read, and re read his books.
