So 50 yards behind my house we have a wooded area. Coyotes have been seen by many people the lady next door just lost her cat. Being that I have a small dog I am a little worried because I normally walk those trails .. she is normally on a leash so I am right beside her but the fact that a yote can eat my dog in 5 seconds.....what do you do.

I joked to a passer by about shooting them but he made sure to tell me that they were always around before us...

So I thought of getting a air horn... frienfriends told me to get ky restricted firm arms and pack a lil something on my walks.... the issue is I am in the middle of a residential area..

Any thoughts.... any body want to practice putting up snares lol

Bring a big aggressive dog to shake down the coyotes or a hound.

The chance of a coyote(s) coming near you even though you're tolling with bait on a leash are slim to none. If the see you they'll be interested but keep a distance pretty much guaranteed. Take a golf club or walking staff with to settle the nerves.

Atta boy.... but no, a rich North Van girl would be a start. Surrey girls are, well Surrey girls!

Salty, these habituated LML coyotes have no fear of people leashes or not. # iron would be first choice.

so, you are scared/worried of a coyote?
really??
pack a knife and some bearspray.
if they are a problem and you need to get rid of them, i'd think you could legally kill it with a bow.

I will let you use my cross bow, you go deal with them. Be fun to see you on the 6 O'clock news.

Your best option I suppose would be bear spray, can't shoot them so don't know what else. But if you see the passerby that told you they were here first you can tell them wrong. Their not native to the west coast. They live here because we made the habitat they need by clearing the land and removing the predators that would eat them.

Ditch the lap dog and get a real one

Look it up, Sec 93 of the criminal code. Maximum 5 year sentence for carrying a handgun where you are not authorized. Really not worth it to shoot a couple yotes.

Funny you mention that. Last night a german shepard and a lab were being followed.

Conservation officers have been pretty good at culling aggressive coyotes in the LML: If they are to the point of not being scared of you they will take a dog on a leash or a baby in a bassinet: I have had coyotes try and take my dog on the Southlands golf courses back in the 1990's this is not a new problem however like Heyblast stated these buggers were not here first there were too many wolves.

North Van is dodgy for taking care of this problem yourself especially with the recent "home made- snare doggy day care" incident on Grouse Mountain:

Better to let Conservation folks deal with them: And stay out of the news :-D

The coyotes at tynehead try to lure dogs too, but it's a co issue. There's no reason to even discuss discharging firearms or bows on the shore, way too many people to outweigh the risk to human life. Just bear spray it.

One dog, one sit down dinner for several coyotes.

I'm not sure I'd (as a hunter) try to solve the problem just yet. Rather play the weak victim and raise awareness to the imploding issue of aggressive coyotes. Maybe work to garner some 'sensational' media coverage on it. Once people are afraid of it, then you might be in a position to propose a solution. IE trapping, baiting/open season. My thought, is if you start solving the problem before people identify with it, your going to be the bad guy.

If you're worried now, about your dog, carry a big stick.

Coyotes are everywhere

With it being north Van I would forget any idea of shooting them and odds are no trapper would touch that area. You could call the CO's but odds are you won't see much help.

If the worry is about when you are walking your dog a high pitch whistle or bear spray is probably your best option. If the coyote is as brave as it sounds nail it with a rock. Odds are it has lost it's fear of people so it just needs to be educated to avoid humans.

Personally to me it is just a coyote and if you scare the crap out of it a few times it will get the hint. But coyotes have and will always be around if you see them or not.

FWIW, I spent a couple years doing a big job at a dog kennel where they bred retrievers and Rotties. The place was surrounded by 6 foot earthen berms and the female yotes would come to the top and yowl at the dogs trying to coax them out. No doubt the rest of 'em were waiting nearby to make a meal out of any of the studs that came to check it out. The place was in the boonies but still not in a place where one could shoot. We were kicking around all kinds of ideas and settled on a .22cal, 500 fps air rifle and a low-wire electric fence. I'd see them driving to work so, while they were still on the property, they weren't sitting on the berms anymore.
Electric fences are also great for keeping otters from sh!tting all over a boathouse or dock.

Go to garden store and get this dog be gone product. Its in a cylinder package and it is pellet for of some kind of pepper product. stops dogs pissing and shitting on your lawn. If not try moth balls, they work for skunks. maybe with their sense of smell it will turn them around too.

I guess it's different down there.
some places you can shoot a bow in city limits.

why would a knife not do anything?
if it came close enough to grab your pooch, wouldn't you rather have a blade rather than your bare hands?

As my daughter would say:
"Suck it up princess!". It's a coyote, not a grizz. We watched one eat the pet rabbit from my kids daycare a few years ago. My (at the time) 4 year old daughter was more impressed that we had a yote in the yard than the fact that it ate the bunny. Move to Vancouver if its too scarry for you living near some "urban forest".

No offense as you are free to raise your family as you wish... but personally I think that's a bit much.
I have no problem in the bush where I have a gun and the animals are spooked... but you can't walk thru the city with a gun

just carry bear spray, maybe one of those 20 dollar pen guns that shoot bear bangers. If you want we can try and get a brigade of girl scouts to escort you thru the dense and dangerous North Van forest. Just kidding around man:-D
