Just blew my 175 sprt jet. For the second time. Only 60 hours on the second motor. Broke the oil injection plastic gear on the crank again.… just wondering if anyone else has many problems with there sport jet. Any info would be great! Thanks!

I had the same power head in an outboard. The oil pump gear went in it as well, I shut it down at the sound of the alarm and trouble shooting revealed the gear ( made of some kind of fiberous material) was worn. The oil pump shaft gear is steel. The reason these go out is the plastic bushing on the oil pump gear shaft gets worn first then does not allow proper contact with the crank gear. So frequent inspection to keep tabs on wear or replace plastic bushing with a bronze oil-lite bushing, you'll have to get a machinist to make one one up. I did neither ( $1800 repair), just pre-mixed at 50:1, had no issues at all doing this. Later , I traded this one off and got a 150hp 4 stroke, power is nearly the same as the 175 2 stroker, boat top speed is 1 mph less on GPS using the same prop.

I ran the 175 Sportjet on a 20 foot Ali Craft for 10 years on many Northwest rivers hunting and salmon fishing, as well as numerous ocean trips. No problem with the oil injector. The only issue was with the solenoid in the fourth year and the stater in the 10th year, which we replaced. Other than that it was a great unit.

they are/were a lousy motor but if you buy enough of them you will find one that works-go to the 200 or better Yamaha

I have almost 1,000hrs on mine, and no problems yet. I have heard of this problem, and the general concensus seems to be that the engines are great, but the oil inj is crap. I've started mixing synthetic oil to my gas at 100:1, my understanding is that this will (At Least) save my engine if the Inj fails. At that point, I will just rip the Inj out and continue mixing at 50:1.
It's not a matter of IF it will fail, it's just WHEN it will fail. Other than that, I have no complaints with the 175. I have no more trouble with it than my buddies with the 200's

Also at close to 1000 hrs no issues, other than the mysterious stall thing after a long long run in the damp, when the carbs get snotted up......may have been the cheaper oil, gonna switch to the expensive stuff and see if that stops it
