game cam is up, no time needed to be booked as its 40min from my house. got a young 6x7 there last year. hopefully it wasn't a fluke. if my cam is still showing action come august i am going to put up my tree stand and try with the bow. my calling abilities havent got to the point where i can get them into bow range yet, there still hanging up on me a little ways out. gonna practice alot this year leading up to opener.

I drive around with my diaphram call in my mouth practicing as I'm on the road a lot for work.
If anyone pulls up beside a Dodge at a red light around town and it sounds like a cow elk in heat in the cab, you know its me.

Got my new Kifaru DT1 with bikini frame, my new EL rangefinding binos and my 85 finnlite drillin' holes. F@#%k yah I'm ready!!!! Just have to keep working out to condition for that long hike in. Nothing gets me reved up like being on that mtn side when the leaves have changed colour and that crisp morning breeze is in your face and that bull is bugling somewhere up there. whow I just got the chills.

Just a quick question, would you actually sit and call at your lick locations during the hunting season or are the setups just to get the animals in the area and you work the surrounding bush? I am just trying to formalate a plan for this fall.

These animals travel a large area everyday so it may be days between them being on cam or at the lick, sometimes sitting and calling at the lick isn't as productive as walking and calling.

last year was my first season hunting elk, biggest lessons I learned are first light, be out there before everybody else, be out there at 4 am in darkness and sit and listen....and the bigger lesson - put away the bugle, I think we maybe had 2 or 3 legit responses and the rest was just hunters calling hunters.....we sat on good vantage points and saw a bunch of bulls that weren't legal, and stalking bush gently cow calling we had one bull come right in for the action and hauled ass out when he saw weren't a sexy cow LOL it was too quick to get a count on the points

september was too warm and waaayyy to busy for my liking, I did better in October and regret not pulling hte trigger on a legal cow, won't be so picky this year, bull or cow, it all tastes great

Yes call from your lick and hunting the area where your lick is set up..

These bulls were around for 2-3 days, then only a few smaller ones showed up. They move around a lot, it is a matter of being at the right place at the right time. These particular bulls are on crown land, but have tough access due to crossing a stream and "bit of a walk".....the Quad buglers will not be around. However, it is a large valley, so the bulls can be anywhere......

I will walk the area and hunt certain ridges that I see lots of rubs on from past years, but will not sit at the cam spots. These cam spots are actually set up for deer, trying to find a big WT buck...these bulls are a nice bonus.

Cheers

This picture will answer your question ,,this bull was shot at one of my baiting stations the bull was cow called in ,, the trail camera took a picture of him hitting the ground after this bull was shot..

did killing the bull in the lick affect how many animals are using it now? might have a harder time finding one there now that you've killed one there.

from my (limited) experience is the cows will still go to the licks if a bull is killed there, and if cows come the bulls are right behind, if you kill the heard cow then they will move to where the new heard cow decides to go, but killing a bull around a bait will only keep them out of that area for a short time

Aww, all I can think about is this upcoming Elk season and hope I get an opportunity to harvest my first Elk.

Hunter 47....damn thats great. Awesome pictures. Trail cams rock! I had mine on video and was actually recording when I shot my 2nd wolf. Picture, unfortunately, was overexposed as the camera was making the switch from night to day. Got the audio though, pretty cool. But damn, not an elk.... I want one boys...BAD!!!!!!!

90lb pack....OMFG. I got to start doing something similar, as the only draw I got this year was a 4-22D Goat.
AND, I want THAT bad too......
Oh.............HUNTING SEASON, where are thou....

The Okanagan holds some real good bulls. Putting in time during the preseason is key to locating them.

He got mad at me when i said no, ( i have a youth hunter under my wing this year and my wife so ill be busy.) Then a few hours later tells me his other buddy told him were there is 60 elk with 2 6x6 and a 7x7 in the herd. And told him were to sit and they will fall into his lap LMAO. I have heard 2 other ppl say the same thing. For 3 years in a row . One guy even said hes been watching a 12x12 since last season . Im chasing elk from Sept 15-Nov 10. Off to the north to chase bulls with my girlfriend, 2 kids and my mom. Kids will be 2 month and 2.5 yrs old. So it will be interesting. After trying to get those two, to connect on northern bulls. It's off to Alberta to try and arrow one then back to the island for my roise. 3 bulls in five years in the okanagan, and my cams are still showing me the elk! they are there, but like Muliechaser said, they are off the beaten track, first bull was 5 km from the nearest road, 2nd bull 2km and the third 3.5 km's. put the cams up last weekend in an area that showed tons of sign, can't wait to see the pics! You guys are getting me giddy.
