Salt the cape.
Use Good game bags and hang your caribou quarters in the shade of one of those thick balsam patches. A nice windy spot is great and if the flies are bad build a smudge to keep them off.

A very good question camaro, and what the hell is a smudge? If your up north and hangin your meat for a while, isn't that just askin for Griz/Black bear into your camp??

lots of fine salt on the cape.
cut willow branches & make a bed to lay your meat on until it is completely cooled off. use game bags & pepper to keep the
flies off. after it has cooled hang it by a creek in the shade. that will work for a couple of days.
if you need to keep it longer, after it has cooled put it in plastic bags and keep it in a lake or creek. DO NOT let the meat get wet.

a smudge is a small smokey fire without a lot of flame...

It likely will get fairly cool at night in late August in the mountains. Good meat bags are a must and you might even consider a meat tent. Get the meat cooled off ASAP and find some shade or create a sun block with a tarp, and you will be good for several days.

Go to value village by some cotton sheets. That way flys can't lay eggs. You can always put your meet in a good flowing river for four or five days won't harm it.

Depending on where you are, finding snowpack up high is perfect. North slopes and shaded draws usually have a few patches.

Bury it down in the snow, heap more snow up on top of it, and if there is moss around, put a layer or two on top to keep the sun off.

It will keep very well
