Went fishing today to beat the heat....Nothing like sitting by the river on a hot day. Fished for about six hours with nary a bite. As I am packing up my sturgeon gear I take a quick peak at my rod and low and behold a nice strong bite. I go to set the hook and hit what felt like a Volkswagen bus. I started yelling at my buddy that I had a big one and to reel up. I watch line peel out from my reel and start to get concerned as I watch the fish head out into the fast water... I tighten the drag up as much as It will go and hope that my line and knots hold up. The fish slows and comes to a stop and the arduous battle between myself (no boat) and the largest fish I have ever fought let alone seen. roughly 20 mins to a half hour go by with give and take on both parts.... I gave thumb skin and some blood the fish gave me some great memories. I finally got the fish in and was amazed to see true Fraser Giant on my line. Well anyways enough story. Not too sure how to post pictures on this site, but I've heard copying a photo bucket link works. http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/Fireguy2007/media/bigsturgeon_zps70e07165.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0

Awesome fish, nice to see there are some big ones left up there. I remember as a kid growing up seeing some huge fish caught in the Fraser around Lillooet, 12' rings a bell but memory may not be that accurate after 50 years. I remember my friends dad, Bill Fowler catching a few huge fish. Thanks for sharing.

You did really well there! A fish like that is a once in a lifetime - or never - for most folks. What gear were you using (rod, reel, line)?

juiceterboost
07-02-2013, 10:55 AM
Yeah thin air it had a few wounds one on the tail, one behind its head as you noticed and another on its far side. The one on its head was scabbed over kind of. I think it may have tangled with a net

Yeah 1899 I was using a ugly stick with a penn 330 reel and 130lb test line

Look at the beak on that sucker, nice work, I landed on like that from shore once and man what a rush, last Oct my boy and I got this guy and I don't think ill ever forget. Over the past 20 years I have have many trophies, one was 7'11 over 500(woops I mean 350pounds) pounds so we are VERY lucky to have a fishery like this, I think from what I read if they ever put a dam on that river say good bye to these monsters. Heres my boy and I from our last sturgeon trip. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/598667_10151085963951523_1618068383_n.jpg

BigFishCanada - 7' 11" and 500lbs? Sounds like a bit of a fish story. :) ;)

My best was 5' 10" and around 85lbs iirc.

I am pretty sure you need to be around 10' to hit 500lbs, but I am sure there are experts out there who know better than me!

According to the charts my fish was around 330lbs but with the girth around fifty inches it must be more

Those are great fish though BFC it seems that all the fish I've caught this year are much bigger all I've seen is six foot and above

That old beast probably would of won the fishing derby coming up. The chap that runs the camp ground by the old bridge on the east side has a chart to tell the size and weight of the fish. I forget his name, but an interesting fellow if he is still there. Nice catch.

I know the individual you speak of haha I believe he goes by Gator. Unfortunately I never get anything in the derby it may or may not be a direct result of the cold beverages that are consumed.

Congrats! What a dinosaur! I've never fished for sturgeon but I have seen a couple. One was a big dead one they found by island 22 15 years ago, big fish! The other was just on Monday out at the mouth of the vedder. We were anchored and this sturgeon surfaced and slapped his tail before he sunk down again. Tail looked to be about a foot and a half tall.
