Any one have recent experience with Tilley hats? I was given one during the '80s and I didn't like it. Heavy and hot in nice weather and a soggy floppy mess in wet weather. I see they have newer fabrics and new designs that would be good for sun and headnet wearing if they are improved.

Under Armour makes a far better one. Called a bucket hat.

I have one that I wear in the never ending Island drizzle from Nov - June. I really like it, fold it roll it for packing and with a couple shakes and a gentle massage it stands right back up! No Viagra necessary. It was about $100 I might get a lighter one too but as an archer it has to have a very soft rim so the string simply pushes it up and out of the way at full draw like the above mentioned felt hat.

Or go all out and buy an authentic Australian Akubra.

The Rivers West boonie is very good for rainy or snowy, wet weather, but is a bit hot in the sun.

Thanks for your responses. I'm not interested in a felt hat or a straw hat. I have looked at bucket and boonie hats but they all seem to have a floppy kind of brim which won't support a headnet away from the face and ears and while many of you would not need to consider that, I do.

Growing up in the desert I went through a lot of hats trying to find "the perfect one". Skin cancer is a slow, painful way to die after all. While i never found the perfect one, Outdoor Research has my favorite as yet.

Only wear a cowboy hat if you like playing dress-up or want to look like a kin-pumping redneck ;)

Lots of different types of Tilley hats. Go to a shop that sells them and try them on. Great hats. I have 4 different styles.

Don't know what surplus Herbies is but that looks like a good hat for the purpose you are using it. Try putting a tall backpack on with that wide brim however and your hat is falling over your eyes all the time. Thinking of trying a Tilley that is make of some kind of nylon, has a brim a little over 2 inches and is vented either all round the crown or only at the back. I'll probably just order one and if it is no good I'll find some older guy with white shorts and short socks to give it to.

Surplus Herbies is a great outdoor/army surplus store. Lotsa good fishin gear there..
Your right about a very tall/loaded backpack would hit the brim for sure..
Buddy today fishing was wearing a hat made by redington- its like a baseball hat but has fabric sewn off the back of it that covers your neck area- great for fishing in the sun and not gettin sun burnt.

Dont forget about the tilley lifetime warranty. My dad lives in his tilley hat. It rots off his head and every ten years he goes to the tilley store and they give him a new one for free.

tilley also has a pair of socks they sell called unholy socks. They also have a lifetime waranty . I have got them replaced twice for free.

They have a good shape if you ever have to wear a mosquito net around your head.
Keeps the screen off your head.

How will you know what size to order? They are not meant to fit snug on your head like a regular hat. I know this because my wife sells them where she works.

I use Filson hats. I have a "Packer" hat and a "Bush" hat(the Bush is much like the Packer but with a wider brim). Both are made from heavy canvas and have a wax applied to them for water protection. I have used both in heavy rain with good results. However, they do tighten up a bit when they are wet so make sure if buy one that it is loose fitting when trying them on. When the hats dry up they are not so tight anymore, but some shrinking does occur.

Here's a link to Filson's site: http://www.filson.com/mens/hats-and-caps/-1011/

They also have the best warranty in the business, wear it out at any time and they will replace it, no questions asked!

I love my Tillie hat.
I've had it since 1991 and still has great shape.
Just wash it once in a while, let it dry and just like new.
Worth every penny I paid, and fantastic warranty.
I heard of a elephant trainer wearing his and the elephant ate it.
He called Tillie and they sent a new one.
The pachyderm eventually passed the hat, so the guy just washed it off and now he has two hats.

Wife and I have had various Tilleys for decades, starting with the old "canvas" ones which were OK in the rain, OK in the heat, all round OK.
Have since changed to the light weight style with vents and they are poor in the rain but superb in the heat which is exactly what we got them for. Pricey but well worth it and extremely well built. Great fly fishing hats. I'd suggest deciding first on the use of the hat and then buying one that works for those conditions.
Whilst I am over 60, pull my socks up to my knees, often wear a multi pocketeted vest and even hike my pants or shorts way up, the Tilleys were all bought prior to me turning 60 so I don't quite fit the stereotype.

Some 'reviewers' say they are floppy and catch a lot of wind. OR seems to have a lot of Sombrero types. Looking at their website 50/50 cotton and nylon seems to be common. What kind of activities do you wear it for?

What was bad in the rain, the material in general or the vents? The LTM5, I think it was, has venting all around the crown. I wondered if that was a place for rain to leak in and run down the forehead. I see they have another model that only has the venting at the back of the crown.

That looks like the one I was thinking of, thanks. Nice ram by the way. I like how they tend to keep the lambs tips when they flare like that.
