Hey everyone,
I finally had some success on the bear hunt, and I couldnt have asked for more! Not much of a story on this one. Walking back to the truck I spotted this guy just over 100 yards away on the road in front of me. He was eating grass and never saw me. I got a picture of him before I took my shot. 1 shot with the 300 win mag and down he goes, falls down the bank of the road. The shot went through his shoulder, through his spine and rested behind his far shoulder. It shot him at about 7:30pm and had him in the truck at about 10. He weighed 192lbs on the hook, by far my biggest bear yet! I had to skin the back half and cut between the loin and rib just to get the bear into the truck. The fur was 6ft from nose to tail skinned out, and the skull was 12 1/8" long by 9" wide for a score of 21 1/8! I was reading on the Boone and Crockett site that you have to let the skull dry for 60 days before an official measurement, but I would definitely like to get this guy scored.
I hope you all had a great bear season!
Cheers.

You got yourself a pig of a bear the color of this bear is a bonus you won't loose to much off the drying period for your final score ,,the caliber you shot this bear with is a great rifle to use for all big game animals ,,congrats to you young fella..http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon14.png..

hmmm interesting #s..nice bear GREAT COLOR...hmmm 192 pounds is above average but not exceptional..the photo with bullet shows decent pad width but not deep front to back...helps in aging..ears don't look overly small..and 6 foot hide off the bear means under 6 foot bear..5'7 ish on the bear,,with those guidelines 19 would be a excellent score on a average bear that size..over 21...confusing...if 60 days EXCEPTIONAL..do not boil the skull

I just seen a 400 pound black bear not go that..and he was 8 years old..and then a much smaller much smaller bear maybe 12 years old so age and size sometimes don't go hand in hand..you sometimes meet 2 men both are 40 years old ones 5 foot five and the others 6 foot 7 and 200 pounds heavier. Surprises are revealed every day...store the skull safe and don't boil it...will be interested in final outcome....regardless you have a fine bear

Congratulations on a great bear? Just goes to show " it ain't over till it's over".

The skull looks like it has been well cleaned already. No meat at all and a bit of cracking, but still a little "dirty". Did you beetle it?

Nice bear you got. And neat that you got a picture of it before you shot it.
I bet you are glad that bear did not go rolling down that hill any more.

Ya if that bear rolled past where he landed, I would have been there all night getting it out. This is my 3rd year bear hunting, and Ive never had anyone show me how to skin a bear for a rug. It would have been nice to keep the claws and head on this one, but I probably wouldnt have enough money to get it done anyways.
I already boiled the skull. I have no idea how you would clean it up without doing that. I know nothing about chemicals or where to get them from. Any suggestions for next time would be appreciated!
Thanks everyone for the congrats!

Ya the skull cracked a bit over the eye bone when I was pulling him out with the truck. Kinda sucks, but it was the best I could do at the time.

HI-pressure washing works well for getting the meat off without boiling also great for cleaning the brain and sinus cavities. You should never actually boil a skull it makes it crack and the teeth fall out and crack. Emerse it in boiling water for about 2 min. pull it out and scrape what you can and repeat till clean. Long process but it wont damage anything.

Ya boiling sure does make the teeth crack. Has anyone tried using high percentage Hydrogen Peroxide? Ive got some 29% stuff that might work at cleaning up my next one.

srupp
06-23-2013, 11:33 AM
hmmm never been a fan of boiling any skull....and hydrogen peroxide if used in too strong or too long will soften the skull causing it to prematurely disintegrate over years...Dermestitid beatles or better yet take it to the Pros.the 3rd photo shows wide muzzle and short..classical signs of a boar..baby lab type of muzzle...looks thick...cracks usually render the skull invalid for records?...looks squat..the skull usually means width...send me a Pm if you wish with a # and I will call with some suggestions for next times skinning..tips and tricks on how to... well done again...steven

Nice bear !!!! that bear should weigh in around the 350 range ? How did you measure the skull? Something odd here abut weight and skull size..

BearSupreme
06-24-2013, 09:23 PM
Yeah I did actually eff up the measurement. After reading stevens post about bear sizes, I thought I should remeasure it. I was taking the measurement on the width from the wrong side of the square. It was 7 1/2" wide, so it was a 19 5/8" skull. DURRR. My bad everyone...

Ambush
06-24-2013, 09:26 PM
19 5/8" is still a very nice bear. No need to be sorry about that.

Its more about misreading a square, I guess thats why im a butcher and not a carpenter lol

makes more sense...still decent measurement...nothing to be upset at...just know bears..and didn't look like a meat head or over 21..those have special features that SCREAM OUT form hundreds of yards away..SHOOOOOT..lol

You weighed it at 192 that's w/o guts..hmmm that's not gonna be 350 maybe 235...3rd bear your doing great..

cheers

lol he was still screaming to shoot, but I guess it gets louder! It was 192 after the skin/paws/head was off, just meat and bone. Thanks for the support and information on bear sizing! I might get out one more time this year. Ive got the game cam on the bear scraps right now, so I gotta head out one more time! Should have some good vids on there!
