May be a chance for the public sector to get involved.

B.C. Wildlife Federation Supports New Federal Fisheries Program
SURREY, B.C. - The B.C. Wildlife Federation (BCWF) applauds the new $10 million
Recreational Fisheries Partnership Program announced this morning by Parliamentary
Secretary Randy Kamp and MP Robert Sopuck on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield,
Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. The program provides an opportunity for the Department of
Fisheries and Oceans to enter into partnerships with and invest in local organizations that are
able to leverage financial and technical support in protecting and restoring B.C.’s watersheds
and marine habitat.
“This program provides conservation-minded organizations with a wide range of opportunities
related to recreational fisheries habitat,” said BCWF President Bill Bosch. "We look forward to
supporting partnerships between our Member Clubs and community groups throughout the
province to protect, restore, and rebuild B.C.’s recreational fisheries.”
The BCWF believes continued future investment in this program by the federal government will
depend on the results of collaboration between industry, community groups, First Nations, and
local governments. These stakeholders have a unifying interest in protecting and maintaining
watersheds and their fish resources and habitat.
The BCWF has long advocated that governments increase investment in programs that foster
local stewardship in watershed and landscape sustainability. This announcement is an
important step towards that goal.
The BCWF is British Columbia's largest and oldest conservation organization with over 40,000
members passionately committed to protecting, enhancing and promoting the wise use of the
environment for the benefit of present and future generations. Visit www.bcwf.bc.ca for more
information.

do they really believe their own words?

since when is industry concerned about the fish and habitat?
hell, if the strict polluting rules weren't in place, they'd be dumping all the shit they could right in to the rivers and oceans.

and governments?
aren't they the ones responsible cutting back co's etc?

and if you talk to most fisherman who've had encounters on the river with natives, they don't seem too concerned about the welfare of the fish.

sure, there are some individuals amongst all these who step up and show true concern, but as a whole, i don't think they are on board like is being suggested here.

i get what they mean though, that for the betterment of the future of the fish and it's habitat, they need participation from all these groups.

Offloading and piecemeal "peace offering".
Doesn't amount to a drop in the bucket compared to the CUTS Harpo et al have imposed on DFO.

Smoke & Mirrors. "See, we're actually doing something".

Ummmm.... Not Really

partnerships with and invest in local organizations that are
able to leverage financial and technical support in protecting and restoring B.C.’s watersheds
and marine habitat.Actually pretty pathetic , if one considers these as core gov't responsibilities. But these days , with everyone voting for smaller gov't , ministries are gutted so the chance for community groups to get involved is the best thing.
Now if the BCWF could hire enough of the right professionals to help in the lead , that would be a good thing.

It's all in the background Adriaticum...

One-third of the habitat jobs in BC were axed recently and more to come. Give from one hand - take from the other.

The 2013 Federal budget calls for 100 million dollars to be cut from the department over the next 3 years starting in 2015/16.

The 10 million offering pales in comparison...

Cheers,
