Anyone who compares Sockey to Atlantic Salmon and makes a comment about color differences, or any differences for that matter is a %^&*ing moron. They are two completely different species, they should be different.

Fish feed is made of fish meal, not soy, grain and whatever else this joker claims.

I'm getting tired of factless B.S. bloggers etc.

Sad state of affairs forsure. It has being posted before but good to see it back up on the board again.

Bacteria, yeast, algae and animal by-products are becoming increasingly desirable as feed ingredients. This summer the EU approved the use of animal by-products in Europe, and Norway is expected to follow suit. Recent technological developments have made it possible to utilise yeast to convert wood chips into a high-value protein source, and the latest APC trials offer hope for a future fish feed (http://phys.org/tags/fish+feed/) based on this conversion.
"We also find that meal based on bacteria grown on natural gas can neutralise some of the negative effects of vegetable proteins such as those relating to the development of stomach and intestinal disorders. And we have seen positive health effects in trials where fishmeal was replaced with yeast." This autumn Professor Øverland is starting up a new project using microalgae.

you've quoted a piece of an article summarizing research in fish feed, mostly tested on rainbow trout. Take a look at the actual feed producers.

Corey Aquafeeds

Skretting

Ewos

To name some of the common companies. Skretting has a good piece on their feed, they do mention that for sustainability reasons there is a trend to use plant based proteins and oils however the their feed is still made primarily of fish meal.

The point is, fish feed is not 100% fish meal. Almost 50% is made up of vegetable and grain material. Aquaculture will not be sustainable in a few years unless they move away from fish meal.

The public needs to be aware of what sort of crap they are being sold.
