Hey guys. Got my first blackie ever last night here in Region 3. Came around the corner on one of the local high mountain roads and saw some sign. Well, the sign continued right up the road and led me right to the bear feeding high up in a cut. Stopped and ranged him at 346 yards; well within my comfort zone but I wanted to get closer as the wind was in my favor. Started a stalk and got to 238. At this point the wind started to change a bit and I didn't want to take a chance as I had already missed an opportunity earlier this spring.

Got a good rest down on the road with my 300 wsm A-Bolt with 150 gr. TTSX and BOOM! He was dead before he hit the ground. Dropped him in his tracks! I've always wanted to do that!

Spent the next 2 hours skinning and quartering him up using the gutless method (which I absolutely love). I learned a lot having never done it before!

I had an hour and a half ride home so got in around 1:00 am and man am I sore/tired today! But I wouldn't have traded it for the world!

Here are a couple of pics:

I'm not sure but I thought about making a nice throw rug and getting the skull done euro style. We'll see what my taxi says when I bring him the hide.

HAHAHA!! I just pissed myself!! But seriously, yeah, I was regretting not wearing something more appropriate. It was a "just going out for a drive after work" kind of hunt, you know? It dropped to 4 degrees on that mountain by the time I was done and when I got back into the truck I realized how cold I was. The adrenalin hid it I guess.

I tried the gutless method for the first time last fall on a deer we had to pack out, it is a great way to do it. They way I did the deer was put the animal on it's side, Pull back on the Rear leg and start cutting the hide as I pull back, then just pop it out of the hip socket and finish cutting. Repeat for the front. Then skin it from the ribs to the spine and cut off the back straps and rib meat. Then go in by the last few ribs and cut out the tenderloin. Repeat for the other side. I then skinned off the quarters back at the truck so it would stay clean while packing. With a bear if your going to keep the hide the only difference would be to skin the whole thing first or skin half then quarter, flip and repeat.

Like Mr Dean said just get in there and it's easy to see how to do it. and youtube is a great source of info

Yes, take your time and don't freak out. The joints are actually quite simple to find and the front quarters basically just peel away. The rears are a bit tougher because of the ball joint but i just put my thick-bladed Cold Steel Master Hunter behind the ball and with a quick twist the ball separates quite easily. The really hard part was the combination of maintaining the hide AND doing the gutless method at the SAME time. I found myself constantly adjusting the bear in order to get a better angle at skinning while trying to keep the meat clean. Note to self: bring a tarp next time!!!
