I'm wondering what type of differences there is between a grizzly and black bear skull

Despite the obvious difference of size, they are quite similar. Grizz tend to be slightly beefier particularly in the muzzle portion:wink:

Oh well that makes it easier to tell, grizzlies have way whiter teeth.

Is that a piece of flannel in the teeth, or just tent nylon?

Without the flesh, the forehead difference looks more obvious than in the hair.

Interesting ... first thing I noticed is the more forward location of the orbital socket in the black bear skull.

Interestingly, the grizzly manible has one more hole for the nerves to run through. More nerves to generate more power in the bigger jaw muscles??
Nice pics Will.

Also you have to realize that the grizzly skull in that photo the bear must have been quite young when it died, grizzlies tend to have a quite longer snount than the black bears and having worked with the skeletons of both a blackie and a grizz all summer long the teeth are quite larger and the skulls themselves are denser for the grizz when compared to the blacks, but you really have to be careful with the age.

Here are the skulls i was thinking of....The one on the left is a black bear and i'm not sure about the one on the right, I noticed it has a prominent y shape on the top of the skull. But now you guys talk about the snout being different...... these ones look to have the same general shape.

Thanks

the skull on the left would be a grizzly i am pretty sure. Remember the dish shaped face that is characteristic of a grizzly, the Y shape makes the skull look more dish shaped. Not to mention, that big of a difference, barring a huge injury, or mutation would definately mean a different species.

The skull on the left is definatley a black bear as it was shot on vancouver island.......the one on the right is a pickup in the hazelton area

On adult bears, dentition can be used to seperate the species. The length of the last upper molar on a Grizzly Bear is more than 3 cm while on a Black Bear it is less than 3 cm.

Also, the first lower molar (3rd tooth from the back) on a Grizz has a medial cusp while absent in Black Bears. A medial cusp for us dentist-haters is a pointed/rounded projection on the chewing surface of a tooth.

Yes I agree, Both Blacks.

I would guess blacks as well. Just look at the side profile of the skulls. Nice flat slope of a forehead is black bear, indented concave shape forehead equals grizz

The sagital crest on the skull on the right is indicitive of a grizzly bear. This crest is where the jaw muscles attach, giving the grizzly bear a more powerful jaw due to the more carnivorous nature of this bear.

This crest is also an indicator of exceptionally strong jaw muscles

Also the snout is longer

Frosty - or one is older than the other. A side profile shot would help to see shape of face/forehead/eye location/etc..

These side profiles show the obvious difference between a grizzly and a black bear. Both bears are mature boars - 18 and 8 yrs old respectively.

Does anyone out there keep their bear skulls and mount them? I asked Ray at Heads Above to save the skull when he makes my bear rug because I want to put it on a plaque. Just wondering if anyone else has done it and what they think.

..........Hell ya

Don't grizzly's generally have a more pronounced forehead whereas black bears have a flat slope. The picture provided earlier in this thread gives visual evidence of this.

The skull on the plaque is that of a black bear..NOT a grizzly..

Thanks for the feedback first one I have ever done...

Hmmm..Mr Dean....I built the raised pannel just for this project...sized it to fit the skull and the photo...I used my raised pannel cutters and a inverted router in a table..the picture frame was simmilarly designed and built.

I kept the color light, although the client originally wanted dark..however the dark black bear photo would be lost in a dark color to the wood so I made an "executive decision "...lol to keep it light...

I was originally going to make the plaque "heart shaped " however the photo made that the wrong choice of shape....all in all Im very pleased at the outcome..for a first attempt..ane I got some exellent help From a good friend Mr Jason Yochman on how to hang the skull on the plaques...

I make roll top desks and fly stations and fly boxes etc...i will try to post an example...

You Sir, would be correct!

Frankly, I have a hard enough time balling up toilet paper.

er...ahhh why yes I believe it does date back to pre-shag...

Mr . Dean..I dont understand the question about the grizzly bear being "burned"...

I can't tell frrom the pic but the plate on the desk seems to be that of wood and the image apears to be burned in to it... AKA wood burning.

srupp
06-06-2007, 09:19 AM
AHHHHH THAT BURNED GRIZZLY BEAR...sheee:oops:sh....right in front of my eyes too..That was laser engraved on a left over piece of birch...the guy had a $70,000 machine that you could put in any photo or image and it would lazer copy the photo INTO the wood..awesome..he;s no longer doing this work unfortunatley...added a nice detail to the desk and other projects I made...

I replaced my camera ( the one that ended up in 700 feet of water on recent grizzly bear hunt)and needed a excuse to shoot some photos.....any interest in the other 3 walls of my trophy room? The fly tying desk is only 1/4 of my "cool room"..

"These side profiles show the obvious difference between a grizzly and a black bear. Both bears are mature boars - 18 and 8 yrs old respectively."

This is a quote from bc billies. Where did the ages come from? Just a question. Not stirring the pot.

BCbillies
07-06-2007, 11:10 PM
The age of the bears came from a tooth sample from each bear. I believe MoE sends the teeth to the U.S. for aging. At the time I harvested the blackie back in 1997 they were aging even blackies, but I believe it was only for a short time and in select regions. MoE takes a tooth sample from every grizzly taken (to age the bear) and a hair sample for DNA.
