Long story short, my first season I get a beauty 5x5 white tail but didn't have the cash to get it mounted, I'm wondering if I was to get another whitey that's no so big would a taxidermist be able/ willing to take the big rack and put it on another deer lol I know I know kind of a dumb question but now I'm really regretting not having a shoulder mount done. Russ.

Yes, done all the time. You could also easily buy a new WT cape from most if not all taxidermists to use with your antlers.

yes, it can be done, not that uncommon, and final product will look great

Does anyone know if I was to buy a cape off of whoever was to do it whether it'd be cheaper than having one of my own and having to get it tanned etc, I wouldn't mind just buying one but I also would kind of like to get my own and have it be 2 deer that I've shot instead of the antlers of mine and skin of someone else's haha

Ain't no problem.... My deer AND my bear had f'd-up capes, the mulie was a total re/re and the bear was patched.

What's a rough price range that mounts go for? I know it varies by taxidermist and you get what you pay for.....

$650-850 from what I've seen

lots of guys dont bother keeping the original capes ...and lots of guys sell capes to taxidermists ... not sure of the going price these days ... $50? $75? ..... the main cost is in the mount ... Dawg is prolly in the ball park .

If your antlers have extra heavy bases you will have a tough time finding a cape that will fit properly. If it is just an average size then it should not be a problem.

Your antlers will look huge on a smaller head I'd do it lol why not

Last I had done was $750ish including fleshing and tanning, and I think they were giving about $50 for a nice cape so theyd probly charge double that on the other end. I'm with you though, the antlers wont go bad, wait till you shoot another one with a nice hide and then getter done.

I just wouldn't want to get one that's too small he was fairly big in the body I'm staid it'd look goofy if too small lol

Shoot a BIGGER one, euro mount that one and use its cape for the old one... Its just that easy! LOL.

talk to a taxi .... I am quite sure that not only do the capes stretch out somewhat but also there are alot of very big bodied deer that do not have huge racks , thats the ones the taxi's buy .... and resell .

You live in Cloverdale, Call Ray Wiens Taxidermy in Langley, he does nice work and can help you out.

His is also a sponsor on here I believe.

CT

Or get some laughs and use a mulie cape, tell every one it's a hybrid, that gets many on this site going.

Does anyone that has done this before refer to the mount as a deer that they shot or do you come clean that its half yours and half someone else's lol

Nothing really to 'come clean' about IMO. Most people wouldnt know the difference and the large number of critters that are shot and replacement capes used out there its pretty common practice actually.

You learn something new everyday I guess I was under the impression everyone used there own capes :s

Not the greatest picture:

But the caribou in that one is actually two different animals. Antlers are from a decent Porcupine Caribou (The ANWAR Herd) taken on the Yukon North Slope. Liked them as they were quite dark, but the cape on that old fellow was right messed up from fighting. The cape came along a year later - taken from a younger Bluenose Herd Bull (East of the Mackenzie Delta) and was quite light. Good contrast between that and the antlers. Looks good, and no-one knows the difference until I explain that the mount is actually a "Hybrid" of sorts...

Lol nope, It's surprising how many people actually do this, I didn't really think about the naturally torn up hides from fighting etc, what's an aprox time frame on a mount, about a year or so? Obviously depends on others ahead of me etc....

Nuttin' really to hide, shit happens.

In the case of my mule deer, someone had taken the cape out of the freezer and place it back in the meat cooler, thinking that that would be ok. It sat in there for 10 days with me not knowing until it was time to butcher up the meat; when I rolled it out for inspection, hair dropped like rice on a wedding day.

And I messed up on the black bear, trimming the cape a tad short on one side for a 1/2 mount. Totally a *My Bad* maneuver.

And I have no problem telling people about this so that they can hopefully learn from my mistakes.

My Roosevelt elk I shot years ago has someone ell's cape on the mount ,,don't matter to me looks as good as if it was the original cape ,,lets face it no one would know if it was not the same cape if you did not tell them...

This picture of this mule deer I found a cape for 100.00 that had been tanned I got it mounted on these mule deer antlers I had shot 38 years ago I look at it this way there my antlers and that's priority over a cape..
