I went for a drive with a friend last night after our sons ball practice ended, we didnt have alot of time so it was more of an exploration adventure for my friend jason. We headed north 20km, since jason has only been here for 2yrs we stopped to glass some slides and to let him know where trails are into the slides. We were seeing lots of cow elk, rabbits and a few piles of bear crap, but no bears. We decided to start heading back towards town, on the way home I decided to show him where my sons and I shot a bear in May. On the 400yd drive into the cut block there was 5-6 piles of bear crap so we told our sons to keep thier eyes open. After getting 150yds into the block jason and I both noticed something odd on the lower landing, it was mixed in with the remains of the burnt slash pile, but we knew it was a bear. I told my son( Evan ) to grab his gun and get out asap, he had a scared/confused/excited look on his face as he tried to bail ot of the the truck. With Evan right behind me I loaded his rifle and set up the bipods and headed across the landing and got into a good shooting location. As Evan got behind the rifle and got set up, I could hear him breathing pretty fast, I reached over and put my hands on his shoulders( poor kid was shaking like a leaf ) and I told him the bear didnt know we were there and to take a few slow breaths and to take his time. Just when he said he was ready the bear started to feed, slowly walking away from us. I told evan to get on the bear and wait for him to turn broad side and stop, after and quick cow call/bark the bear turned enough for a shot. I told evan to shoot when he was ready. A few seconds later the rifle went off......Bear down......Quick reload he's still moving......Bang( miss )..........Bang( miss ). As I rushed to get more rounds in the rifle the bear stopped spinning in circles. After watching for a few min we drove down to the lower landing to collect evans first bear/animal.

My computer is screwed so I cant post pics. If someone would help me out Id greatly appreciate it. Thanks Joe

It was the best hunt ive been on. he's been through hell for a 10yrd old and doesnt show his excitment very much, but he couldnt stop smiling.

Great bear, congrats to your boy! What rifle is he shooting? My 10 year old wants to hunt this fall. I have a Savage 11F in 243 coming for him.

He was shooting his grandfathers .243 with 100gr hornady hand loads. The shot was 204yds, and he hit it in the spine. I found what was left of the slug and it was only 28grains

Thanks for that info. I'll be loading up the 85gr TSX for my son to use - hopefully on an island blacktail this fall or next.

His grandpa is very proud of Evan, It"s to bad that I wasn't there for his first bear. Now for his hunting of elk this fall!
