August Bear

Hey everyone,
Just checking out the new bow season in region 4 for August black bear on private land. I just wanted to know if anyone has got a bear that early in the fall. I love spring bear, but I shot a bear in october 2 years ago and it was horribly gamey, turned me off bear for quite a while. Can anyone compare the two?

I got a bear a few years ago in the late fall, and it was wayyyyyyy better than the spring one. By that time in the year, they have fattened up on berries for the most part.

How late are you talking? like November?

Late fall for here is the end of September lol

lol I guess so, maybe I got a bad one. Did anyone get an August bear last year?

I shot a fish bear one August and it smelled as bad as it tasted. Shot another one in August that was on a berry patch and it tasted sweet - sickening sweet. All other August or later bears were on a good diets and were excellent. That's not bad - two bad bears out of almost 50 years of hunting.

We've taken lots of fall bears, never had a bad one, the fat makes the BEST pie lard!
