SRupp came out to visit for a few days and we spent a bit of time bear hunting and fishing. Both world class in this area of the world as Steve was about to find out. I was looking for an exceptional bear, it had been years since i had hunted one for myself. First evening out in one of my honey holes we bumped a big boar, I am looking at it at 70 yards and having a tough time deciding if was good enough or not. The silence was broken by Steve saying shoot, a split second later I center punched the big boar, still questioning my decision. I learned one thing in the process, Steve is actually better at judging bears then telling jokes(believe it or not) the bear I was doubting turned into a 6'10 400lb boar. A beautiful chocolate brown trophy.

With the bear out of the way I was soon to learn another secret of Steve's he actually is good at flyfishing as well!!!!! Sounds like a bit of a stretch but I saw it with my own eyes. I took Steve to one of my favorite lakes to have a lesson on flyfishing. 3 hours later with 21 fish landed as well as a few stray hooks on my line ( in my hand, jacket, boat, Steves throat, just to name a few).

One more day tomorrow and we will try out my hounds on a bear or two and then send Steve packing, back home for a much needed rest.

Congrats! I'm happy to hear that both you and Steve were able to take some personal time out in the field. You both deserve it after all the time you've spent taking and/or offering help to so many others. That's an impressive bear, and yes, Steve certainly knows his stuff. Imagine how heavy that brute would be by early fall.

hmmm..using Dougs computer,,,Doug perfectly dropped the brute and tagged it out for a new addition to their home..I will add a few photos and words once I get home..the hospitality...food is incredible However the quality and numbers of BIG BIG bears here is absolutley World class...best I have seen anywhere and everywhere not just a few spots.....and lots of off color bears chocolate ..seen more browns than blacks.....and this time I aints saying where the flyfishing lake was..one of the best days in my life flyfishing..yes THAT great.I do know some stuff about flyfishing and bears..bother exceptional and as Doug said World class...no doubt..

As for the hawg that DOUG harvested...it has everything....weight...primo coat...color..skull size..male..every last point one looks at for a cranker..and Dougs shot not even 1/8 inch off the bulleseye perfect harvest shot...just so damn heavy to load...lol..and so far I have seen 4 shooter bears..did I mention how good the bear area is???

Nice of Julie and Doug to allow me a couple days R/R

Well I finally made it home and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Julie and Doug at Skinner Creek outfitting for their hospitality, all the good times and the laughs... I truly enjoyed the few days I spent with them. I took the time to read the replies in the posts regarding Doug's phenomenal bear and I can assure you that Doug was not standing way behind the bear... I know I took the photo. The one photo that Doug is slightly out of focus shows the distance from the nose that is in focus to where Doug is.. And the camera can't compensate with the flash for that 7 foot distance. For those looking for a true trophy bear look at the muscle mass crease on the bear's for head, the low hanging years off the side of the skull, and how small the ears look... The huge massive forearms that are the same diameter above the elbow to just above the wrist..stove pipe arms... Also the pristine and long claws, and the Pads were over 5 inches wide.... The color and Primo hide will make an awesome trophy... The final day we found another bear and it wasn't what I wanted to shoot so we got a hold of Cody.... I believe this is Doug's nephew... And while Doug went to get Cody I stayed in the meadow and babysat the bear on till Cody showed up and harvested his first big game animal ever.....
Great flyfishing, phenomenal scenery, huge muley bucks..... Six or seven cranker bears... Lots of color phases.... And the world-class accommodations and meals courtesy of Julie at Doug and Julies Skinner Creek outfitters....

It was also interesting that both Doug and I aged his bear and over eight... Based on the teeth wear.. However Cody's bear will make a six-foot rug... However both Doug and I agreed it was a much older bear perhaps as much as 12 years old with much more wear on his teeth....

World-class everything.... Not a bad place to spend four days..

Cheers

Steven

someone asked if we found Dougs bear with the hounds?? No that one was still hunted the second spot and stalk...we did use the fine athletic dogs and treed a bear the 3rd day but it was slightly under the dimensions for a keeper..
Doug was set up to host the Wounded Warrior program...hosting injured ,wounded soldiars however the timing got re-arranged by constantly shifting army schedule,I was there with a guides license to help Doug with a second hunter...however Man plans....God decides...and I guess Generals rule??lol I watched previous hunts on Blue ray disc of wounded warriors as Julie and Dougs generosity wasn't a one time deal...
So with the warriors not coming till next week gave Doug and myself some R&R time..when in fact Doug was hosting outfitting and guiding war Heros...the must have won the purple heart to be considered for this program to be eligible to come on a hunt through the program rules set by the WWIA.I was merely trying to help to a much smaller degree than Julie and Doug. However when we had some free time we sure made the most of it..2 bears harvested and amazing day of fishing...and that 7 mile hike for the treed bear..(lol it was 127 YARDS) the dogs treed it in mere minutes...

Hope everything comes together next week and 2 soldairs arrive maybe I can go back and put that guide license to work for a hero...

As for Julie and Doug...world class area.... world class hunting ....world class fishing .. Doug and Julie class act..

hmmm and a chance at THE world class Coutenays Cupcakes.... still just $12 dozen...however she does accept $100 USD bills....in exchange for a dozen cupcackes....

cheers and wonderful lifelong memories

A funn few days Steve, thanks for coming out. We had a blast the next time we dump the dogs on a good strike we may not be so lucky.I wish the bruin I shot had been with the hounds but my dogs where recovering from a 20 mile fighting bear the day before. Nothing easier then killing bears without dogs.

There seem to be a few on this site that don't no what a big bear is. Those are the guys that shoot those " meat" bears I guess. All those pictures have me sitting at the bears hip,
not an inch farther.
The truth is I had Steve out to give his dear wife Susan a break.
