The spring has sprung up in the Yukon, and the first weekend in may found myself and my girlfriend headed out grizzly bear hunting. This was the only weekend I was going to have to head out bear hunting. So we packed up the truck. Loaded the quad and hit the highway for a 6 hour drive to some prime grizzly hill sides.

Friday night We got to a spot that looked like a great place to camp. It was 3 clicks away from the hills I planned on hunting but perfect for glassing. We set up camp. Cooked up some grub and enjoyed a few wobbly pops while I glasses the hills for any sign of a grizz. We retired around 1100 pm

Saterday morning was beautiful. Climbing out of the fart sac at 6 am I had coffee percolating and breakfast cooked for mama bear to awake to. After scarfing down a mean bowl of oatmeal, I hit the hillsides with my optics. It wasn't long and I had a beautiful boar in my spotter. We watched him for a half hour as he fead across the hill. We made a plan of attack and loaded up the quad with our pack frames , day bags and rifles and hit the trail to close the 3 Kms between us. We lucked out as the trail brought us right to the base of the hill. One last look to see where the bear was at. I caught his ass end as he went over a saddle. So we started our climb. 2000 vertical feet later we had the wind in our face now we just had to close in on him. It's seemed everytime we came over a hill the grizz was going over another. Finally I saw him feeding on a hogs back but we were still about 800 yards from him. As I was looking at a route for a stalk he slipped into a gully. I figured he must have been bedding down as it was mid day now. My girlfriend not wanting to sneak in to close not knowing where he was we sat and waited for the bear to arise and show him self again.

We sat for over an hour. Patiently waiting. I was looking at the ground the we had covere and glassed back towards camp. Just as I was looking in that direction , something caught my eye in the middle of a grassy meadow down below us. It was another grizzly. Really blond in color. I immediately though it must be a sow. As its shoulders we're quite narrow compared to the boar I had been watching all morning.
Within 5 mins she had wondered back into the timberland out of site.

The weather was starting to crap out on us and in the excitement earlier I left our rain gear at camp. It was getting windy and rainy and we were getting cold. So I was trying to convince my girlfriend in making a play on the boar. When about 1000' feet down and right on the same track we walked up, I spotted a dark spot on the hill side. It was another boar. And in a perfect spot for us to get to. With a quick plan we were off. Closing the distance in little time. I could see the bear starting to move further down a draw. At this time the bear was 400 yards away. But between us was a thick strip of alder and I knew when we come out on the other side the bear would be close. Very close. So off we went. I was not a popular man as the misses did not like the act that we couldn't see 5 yards in front of us. But it all turned out fine. We broke through the alder as quietly as we could. A quick few minutes of looking through the binos and I could see the bear 80 yards away moving at a steady pace for some more alder. I had to side hill quickly before he got in to far. The bear spotted me take my last few steps and he stopped to see what I was.
Boom!!!! Kerwhap !!!! A shot to the shoulders and the bear was spinning. I quickly reloaded and fired again. Kerwhap!!!!

Holy shit !!!! That happened fast. The bear spiraled into the alder. We waited quietly listening for any crashing or rustle. Nothing. After we calmed our nerves and waited for about a half hour I decided to go look for blood. On arrival of where the bear was I was searching the ground for any sign of a hit. The misses says there he is in an excited toneand I expected to see him Coming at us. But there he lay. Beautiful. He made it about 20 yards and piled up.

The rest of the day was speant carefully skinning and fleshing the bear. A nice down hill pack back to the quad and back to camp for Some celebratory drinks.

This bear is a decent boar for up here. He squared 6.5 ' and a 21 3/4 " skull.
He will make a nice rug.

I didn't mention, but my girlfriend videoed this hunt and I will edit and post it soon. It's true bear hunting up close and personal.

Thanks for reading

Great bear Scott! You are certainly taking advantage of the hunting opportunities in the Yukon.....but dont ya think a dalls, a buffalo, and a grizz in less than a year is a bit glutenous:-D
