Was well into the Kamloops Lake sheep unit yesterday and saw this guy. If you were one of the lucky tag holders would you pull the pin on him opening morning or would you wait for something bigger?

I didn't see any bigger yesterday but I saw one over the winter in the Tranquile area that is bigger. The gamble if you had the tag would be, do the big boys from Tranquile wander into the LEH unit in the dewdrop? If I had the tag, it would take some serious scouting to answer that question.

Here's a ram that 'might' wander into the unti? Would you put all your eggs in one basket and hope he shows up or would you focus on the biggest and best that you know live in the unit?

Awesome photos as usual! If I was ever lucky enough to draw that tag I'd spend a couple of weeks ( at least ) looking things over. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot that ram if he was the biggest one around, Looks like 7 years old to me ( i could be wrong ). I would like an older ram if possible. Hey if your going to dream, dream big.
Thanks for the photos.

I got both rams at 8 years old. Even according to the Grand Sheep Poobah they are good enough. ;) I've had some sheep nuts tell me that the Heavy Dude in the second round of pics is easily a top 10 Cali in the world and possibly pushing the top 5. I don't know much about that but I know I would have to scout all summer long to ensure he was in or out of the unit before I'd consider the first ram as a first day shooter.

Those two have to be up there in the top three of those currently alive. Even still, with that tag it would be tough to pull the pin on day one on ANY ram. I would only be ready to drop the hammer after at least 2 weeks of looking over all the rams I could locate in the unit. Now on the other hand, if you've been scouting for weeks before the opener...that's a bit different...but still tough.

First day!?! I'm already popping a top to celebrate, and I haven't received my Kamloops sheep authorization
(pretty much a gimme) to shoot any of those rams would be incredible.
Great pics,

That first ram is nothing to scoff at. Unless you knew the bigger one was actually living in the draw zone it would be pretty stupid to pass him up. It's not like you're ever getting the tag again.

For me his is definitely a shooter on day one.
I have only hunted bighorn when they were open down by OK Falls.
Never did get close to a legal ram but saw lots of sheep.

Only a 7 year old sheep. I would wait for something bigger. That's the good thing about the area, the sheep are not spooky, if you See him on opening day you will most likely see him again.

Geez, good question! I have had a similar conundrum... With a LARGE mule deer a long way out at the end of the day... didnt shoot. Went back all fall long and worked on him. Never saw him again under 1500 yards... Lesson learned... I would pop that sheep for certain! I have never shot one. Looks like a good first timer to me!!

I actually find the rams within the hunt area are a little more spooky. Even though it isn't too far out of town, these rams see way less people compared to the Tranquile herd. But I agree, I am sure if you were to see this ram on the opener, you probably could relocate him sometime later in the hunt.

Definate shooter ram. I would be hard pressed to not take him. Bird in hand

If I got picked I would wait try to find one bigger as the season got latter and still no ram I would go back and find this ram and take him..

Beauty rams both! That is a once in a lifetime tag, so I'd scout the hell out of it, too. If ram #1 was the biggest I found within the unit while scouting, then I would shoot him on day 1 rather than hoping that #2 moved into the unit before the end of the season. But that's just me...

I'd take him if I could shoot him from my truck(with my permit)of coarse. Nice pics Dana, as usual you always take super pics.

I think best chance at getting biggest of the two would be the late draw, hope the big boys move into the draw area. I remember quite a few years ago when I was living in kamloops the local club got together and did a count of the sheep once a year, do they still do this. Remember seeing some pretty good rams just up from the old pig farm, but like you said along ways for tranquille herd to go to be legal. I'd kill second one first day in a heartbeat

Plenty of times the Tranquile rams have accepted me as part of the herd and fed 5 yards or less from me. Whereas 20 yards was the Dewdrop ram's comfort zone. ;)

Hmmm I have a problem not shooting something the first day that I wouldn't pass on the last day....on the other hand you have a good chance for a great ram or a great chance for a good ram

I probably wouldn't hesitate on the first ram on the first day but it would depend on what I found while scouting. Great pics! I'm pretty sure I saw the second ram along tranquille this yr, he was a beauty!
