SS's new adventures 2013

So I thought instead of posting seperate posts each time, I would try to copy Coachs great post of 2012 and 2013 and post up some of my adventures from this part of the Province I moved to.
One of my co-workers is a deer hunting freak and has got me back into game cameras and scouting. Been pouring over maps that I have access to and looking for locations to set up a few cameras. Ten days ago I set a couple cameras to see what was around At spot 1, saw 4 wt deer and a couple moose while setting up the camera, Spot 2 was 100 yards off a old field. Today went to pull the cards and see what they held.

First spot was good, card showed me that there was animals around;

To bad that I had to move the camera, but the tree I posted the camera on was one of only 3-4 that was left standing after a wicked wind storm went through. One tree just missed the camera, you can see the branches from it between the deer and camera. I moved it to a great trail , will see what that location produces.

Spot 2 was a lot slower, althought this guy did show up for a few frames. The slowness was probably due to the increased gas activity that is happening in the old field.......lots of deer and moose sign, but just to busy. Moved it to a nice location along side a creek where three trails cross the creek and join.

I do miss the ocean and fishing/crabbing and prawning, plus will miss hunting those little BT buggers.....but have had more sun since we moved than we had all last year...and there is much more to do here.

I found this little guy a couple weeks ago, he just made it across the road before he collapsed, he was probably dead less than an hour....he was covered in ticks, which sped up his demise. He was skin and bones and most of his hide was rubbed off. I have seen a lot of moose this spring and in some places, the ticks are bad, in other, the moose look fine.

Lots of trails around, some are heavily tracked with a mix of deer/moose and elk, with the odd wolf and bear. Finally found a couple that are way off the beaten path, no sign of others and look like stout trees, so the cameras are now hung.

This was weird, was driving around and found where someone had shot this calf. At first I thought it was a bear, but the wavy hair, no canines and floppy ears said cow. There was a bunch of shotgun casings around the scene as well.

I have 4 cams; 3 spypoints; 2 IR-7, 1 IR-5 and a homebrew w/sony camera. Now looking at Bushnell for their video, plus right now they have a $50 rebate on any cam. I would like to have around 6-7 cams out in the next couple years. Don't have a boat any more, so I have to have something t spend my $$ on...:mrgreen:

A few young bucks with a good mix of does. The salt I put out was all gone and the area is tore up from them, replenished the salt and will check in a couple weeks. I was surprised to have a guy walk by the cam but he never touched it, great to see there is some good people still out there!! The cam is about 35 min walk from any road, so not sure what he was doing out there, maybe the same thing I am doing.....

Great pics, SS!! Looking forward to following along. Great to be able to compare antler size and watch as they grow through the season. I'm very curious as to what a BIG buck looks like this early in the year. Maybe a few other guys will post what they are finding.

You guys are all around it, it's off the upper Cache/Inga Lk, feeds into the Halfway. Lots of elk, deer and moose in the valley, access can be tough, unless you hike in.

Went out on Sunday to check a couple trail cams that have been soaking for 2 weeks. The first one was a no-go, not one animal, but I was expecting it. It was located on a small ridge in a thick swamp, old deep trail cuts from on side of the swamp, over the ridge and back into the swamp. It is now moved to a small lick I found that has had some "Extra" added to it.

Second camera had 130 picts on it. Here is a few;

WEnt to check my cams last Monday after a 7 day soak and was pleasantly surprised, especially on one cam. Usually I get 100-130 picts for 2 weeks, this time I got 80 on one, (batteries died) and the other 720, way more than expected, especially for 7 days. I have the can set on 3 shot burst with 10 second delay so I don't miss anything. I also believe in the addition of the "extra" to the water softner salt is helping.

Cam 1 is set up in what I call the "old apple orchard" These guys showed up and smiled for the cam until the batteries died (don't buy cheap batteries, or at least check their voltage before setting out the cam....)

Cam number 2 is located at what I call the "well pad". It had a huge number of different animals visit, lots of whitetail does, no bucks though and a few different ones of these;

Other than the family unit, all the others hung around for a few picts and moved on, had no idea there was that many bears in the area.

Then when I was cutting across some thick stuff, the dog stopped right at my feet and started to wag her tail. I kept walking and caller her, she didn't move and wagger her tail even harder...I walked over and came across this...

I called her off, snapped a couple picts and left. The way the fawn was situated, I figured the mom had stashed him and gone off to feed. The fawn never flinched the whole time....

Yes I was super happy to see twins. Our moose have taken a huge hit over the last few years by the wolves. Seems like the wolves have now moved to greener pastures. Hopefully with cows like this one producing 2 a year we'll see our moose pops grow again in upcoming years.

I've yet to see a deer fawn this year but have seen plenty of fat does looking skinny once again. I'm sure they will keep the little ones hidden for the next few weeks yet.

Just completed 9 months of training in the Heavy Duty Mechanics program and there is job prospects up there. I just having misgiving about leaving the coast behind... love the prawns, crab, and of course the fish too.

The program does it. It came free with the newest member of the camera clan, a Bushnell Black Flash (it's still in the bush, will check it this weekend) I took the 700+ picts from my Spypoint and have put a couple of these picture video's together. It can do a ton of things with the picts and video, I am just touching the tip of what it can do. I have another one that I will add shortly.

Have been busy for the the last couple weeks, but finally found the time to check a couple cams.

The weather has been a mixed bag, but I have been told by the locals that there is a lot more rain than usual, which has produced lots of lush feed for the animals. It has been showing on the animals, they are sleek and in good shape. There has been lots of activity a caouple of the spots I have cams set up; elk, moose and both species of deer have been visiting the sites.

It was a great time and although the bugs were bad at Carp, the weather cooperated and it was hard to get the kids out of the lake. We then moved to Whiskers Point, where the rest of the time was spent swimming and relaxing.

You have some very nice animals coming into your trail cams that's whats nice about baiting and having eyes out there 24,7 you know what is in the area when you are not out there the camera is your best friend and well worth the few dollars on what great plusher it gives a person..

I do hope they stick around, there is at least four 6 pt bulls in the area. I have another cam about a km away that is taking video and there is a couple 6 pts there as well. The area is covered in old rubs and trails and there is tons of fresh tracks on the trails. Time will tell and if they are not there, they will be some place close.

The other bull is a good 6x6, but is a young bull and this bull would not let him get near the salt until he was finished. He came in after and stuck around for 10 min before leaving.

I am leaving both cams alone for the next month to see what is around.

One question about the timing of the animal activity. Do you find that the animals don't show up for a day or two after you've gone out and downloaded the photos from the SD cards? Just wondering about the effects of human scent (and maybe your dog's scent if he's along too) on whether it keeps the animals away for a day or two after you've visited the camera sites.

I don't worry about scent, from either me or my dog (she comes out on every trip). I have had deer and elk show up 2 hours later. I think that they just get used to us being around that we are just another animal in the bush.

Finally have a pretty decent buck show up at one of my cams. He think he is still a young deer, but lots of potential. For some reason, a lot of the bucks I have got picts have some good beams with short tines.

After leaving the cams out for a a few week, I finally got back to check on them. the elk have moved from one spot, but now show up on a cam 3 km away. This cam produced these guys and a bunch of does and fawns.

Great pics, SS! That's a very cool looking two point you got there. I saw one like that a few years back while hunting up the Yalacom. He dwarfed the other bucks with him both in antler frame and body size.

Thought I would post up my 2013 hunting adventures, starting with today.

Started off a little slow today as I forgot to fuel up the truck, so back in to town set me back 15 min. Got to the area I want to hunt (where the big boys I caught on camera hang out) and quickly hit the bush with the dog.

After walking slowly towards where the cam is set up, a came apon the water hole that has been filled all summer, since we had the most rain in a long time. I thought I was back on the coast.....
The bulls had been using it...mud was everywhere, including 5' up the side of a tree.

As I made my way along a good trail, slowly cow calling, stopping, watching and repeat, I caught movement off to my right...elk...I looked through the binos....bull....as I watched he turned and showed me a 5x5 rack with a cool twist on top like a rosie. (3 pt bulls or bigger are open) I watched him for a couple min before he got tired of me and wandered off. Nice bull, but not one of the big guys.

After another close encounter with an unidentified elk (wind and a bit of a let down on my part), I started to work my way back to the truck as temps today were to get to 28 and the bush was already getting warm, not temps I wanted to pack an elk out in......

As I got back to the road where the truck was parked, I looked up the road and saw this....

He was with 4 cows and again, although a nice 5x6, not Mr Big, so off he went with his ladies.

When I got in the truck, it was already 23 at 10:30....

Over all, 6 elk (4 cows and 2 bulls), 7 grouse and a muley doe were seen. I bugled a few times, but heard no replies.

Looks like a gorgeous chunk of land to hunt. I'm betting you'll see some nice critters there once the weather turns.

The spot with the big bulls was slow for producing sightings of them since Aug, so I moved the cam to a wallow near by and was rewarded with some pretty cool videos. Click on the pictures to see them....and sorry for the sound, keep your volumes medium.

The other thing is that the first 3 videos were on the 10th of Sept, the first Sept 10th I have missed for hunting in a long time....figures

Back from our annual moose hunt with the boys.

The best thing about this hunt this year was the 2 hour drive home instead of the usual 22 hour drive.....http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/smilies/biggrin-new.png

It was another great hunt, with lots of action and some close encounters. Only 4 of the usual 7 could make it, so it made for more room and less ground being covered. Got there on the 27th in the evening and got things set up for everyone. Headed out the next morning to the "Moose Motel", scouted the area and did some calling. The lack of fresh sign and no answers had me thinking the wet summer had the moose still in their summer range. The "Motel" is one of those area that always holds moose and everytime we go in there (30 min quad ride and 15 hike in) there is cows bawling and bulls grunting. We have had as many a 7 bulls at one time grunting at us.

Once we got inside, we found the area is hammered with tracks, beds and rubs. But it is tough to get them out of there.

I put a cam in there back in early Aug, which resulted in ~3300 pictures, 9 of a black bear tearing the cam off the tree the next day and the rest of the sky and trees.....:mad:. But I will give Simmons a big thumbs up, the bear broke the sensor cover, exposing the inside of the cam. The cam was exposed to the sky for a little less than 2 months and is still taking pictures.

The next day the rest of the boys showed up.

We finished off camp and set off to find Mr. Bullwinkle. I had found a new area that I wanted to check out. We tried back in Aug, but a 7" grizz track had my wife wanting to look somewhere else.....Now with guns and a partner who was not so nervous...http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif we ventured into the area. It is an old block with a large creek flowing along one side. We got in the block and immediatley heard some branches breaking just in front of us. I cow called and we got a grunt and a freight train running right at us, he stopped about 20 yards away, just showing a glimse of his body. Suddenly he turns and bolts......I call a few more times to no answer. As I bend over to pick up my gun, I hear a rustling where he was standing, I look over and see a FRIGGIN GRIZZLY head pop out of the bush. I stand up and yell GRIZZLY, my partner jumps and then see THEM. Yes THEM, as THREE more pop out of the underbrush. Yup, thats FOUR grizz at 15 yards, a sow and 3 cubs. We are now both yelling at the top of our lungs and have a bead on the bears. The bears all stand up, then drop back down and take another step......I think we are now in screaming mode and jumping off the ground, then my dog Kaza see's them and gets in the act.....well when she went nuts, that made up the sows mind, she turned and buggered off, with the 3 cubs in tow. I look over at my buddy, give him a big smile and say, "We are out of here....". 5 min later he pulls out his phone to mark the GPS point and he is still shaking so much he cannot get his finger to hit the right spot....Later he tells me that is his first ever grizz sighting. Got to love moose hunting in grizz country!!!!!

The next few days are pretty quite, I get one bull and cow going crazy, but it is hard to beat mother nature and he was too far away for me to challenge him. A storm rolls in, which brings snow, sleet and rain, great Island deer hunting weather, but the moose go into the thick, thick stuff to wait it out....so it gets slow. We hunt hard and cover the usual spots, but no responses.

Some of the areas we hunt, steep and thick, but the moose are in there....and nobody hunts these areas for those exact reasons.

The last day of the storm, we head out to check out another new area, the snow is falling hard and with wind is making it fun to set up.

A little calling and this guy shows up, walking down the road.....

He is a 9x7 bull with a single spike on each brow, not big enough, but we had some fun with the guy until he got tired of the two guys trying sound like a sexy cow.

The storm rolled over and the moose started to wake up. I had a bull come in and then hold up, so I went on the offence (really like this method) and started grunting and raking while walking towards him, getting inside his comfy zone. That really got him excited and he came on to challenge me. I mimic his every grunt and rake, that got him freaking out. He came grunting and smashing his way to to, all that stood between me and him was a thick alder patch. He raked and smashed and grunted, I repeated it, then he went quite as a felt a slight breeze on my neck. I waited 10 min, nothing, so I made myself sound like a small bull and went through the alder stand.....no moose, but 20 yards from me I found this.

Last night the other 2 guys had a bull and a couple cows going crazy in "The Motel", but he would not leave his ladies. So this morning, was our turn. Went in and hunted the areas hard, no a sound......at 11, we went to the "Observation Deck" and heard a cow bawling and bull grunting back over in the "Penthouse Suite".....but the wind was wrong, so I tried to coax him in. He started to when I went sweet sexy on him, but he held up and no matter what I tried to do, he would not come any closer.....we left him and 'The Motel" for next year.

Later that afternoon, the bulls really woke up. I had a bull coming in on a string when he held up at 40 yards, went aggressive and he took off running....you could hear his antlers smashing branches way back in the timber. As I was thinking about heading abck up towards the quads, I heard another bull way off in the distance grunting and he was coming closer. I worked him in until he was 40 yards away, but could not get a good count on his tines. Then only the second vehicle I had seen or heard all week comes chugging up the old road.....the bull moves behind some thick stuff and disappears. The truck turns around (trucks really are noisey vehicles...) and there is silence. I grunt once and the bull goes crazy and beats the brush right in front of me, then walks out...

1,2....1,2, not enough on the brow....1,2,3,4,5,6, 7,8,9....1,2,3,4,5,6 ,7,8,....damn.....an other guy who will live to see another day. I did the rifle over the head trick and started grunting while walking towards him, he would sway his head and grunt, so would I....it was fun until he walked away, still grunting and rubbing....

While we playing, another bull came in silently and thrashed a bunch of brush, but would not show himself.

We moved to another place and had 2 more bulls come in, but they either held up in the thick stuff, or the wind played tricks.

Soon it was getting dark and we had a long quad ride back to camp. I turned on the phone to see if the other guys had any luck and see and text "don't drive by the 8 shot block"......YES!!!!! !

Finally a legal bull and a beauty as well. Last year we left it to the last 3 hours of daylight, this year we left to the last 2. He came an a string and the shooter put him down with one at 40 yards. The koolest thing was that it was his first moose after 5 years of trying and he did it on his own. Using the gutless method we had the moose quartered, packed and hanging back at camp in 2 hours.

We had another great trip, with lots to see and some awesome moose action (and bears....).

Over all we called or had answer to us 14 different bulls, heard numerous cows bawling. We also caught up on life and enjoyed a few brewskies and some fine scotch and whiskey.

I am so proud today!!!!

A few years ago the wife went and got here CORE and PAL, so she could try this thing called hunting. We talked about her hunting and she told me that she wants to try grouse first and that might be all she will hunt. I was so happy to show her what I love to do, but on the island, grouse are there, but not in huge numbers. Fast forward to this year and she bought her first hunting licence and asked when we were heading out grouse hunting.

Today we did all the town stuff and after a late lunch, grabbed the dog, packed a couple guns in the truck and headed out. We went to an area where I have a camera with the intent to hunt for grouse and check a cam. Well we never did get to the cam as we had a great day. As we were driving up this old road, she yells grouse and I slow the truck to a stop. She see's it in a tree, loads the 22 and takes aim. 1 shot gets the grouse nervous, #2 shot gets the bird to jump to another branch, #3 shot and the bird and feathers fall to the ground.....

She was happy and sad at the same time, so I asked her how she felt and she was Ok and wanted to keep going. I could see and feel her excitement as we went looking for more. We ended up seeing 5 grouse, with only 3 allowing shots and one coming home with us. She asked if we could head back out on Monday and I was all for that!!!!!

A bull shot and left because some "Hunter" thought the two on the brow was three and the total count of 4x5 was 10 on one side........reported to RAPP. Really sad to see.

All in all it was a great day and I am so proud of my wife. She says I have to guide her to 3 more so we can have fresh grouse for dinner on Monday. I told her she needs to shoot straighter....
