what would you use to seal?
i'm not talking anything big, just the little screw-holes from where a transducer was moved.

a friend just did some work on his boat, a fiberglass cabin-cruiser.
and he filled the holes with just plain bathroom silicone.
i was kinda shaking my head.
wouldn't epoxy have been a better choice?

and would saltwater affect the silicone worse than freshwater maybe?

Pick up a quart of Kitty Hair, he'll find a use for it here and there for a long time.

A proper fiberglass patch would be best, but for screwholes there are plenty of choices.

I take it this is on the transom?

thanks for the answers, i'll pass it on.

yup, it's on the transom.

he actually just called me.
they are out today off van isle fishing.
his new lowrance, he isn't getting it to read depth.
they are in 100' of water or so and it's saying 2'.
any quick tips he can try?
i suggested he have a look at his transducer, but they can't while in the water.
i know it has a reset/recalibrate feature, he said he tried that and nothing changed.

silicone? No, leave it for the bathroom if that. If he wants a quick and dirty repair with goop in a tube go with Sikflex 291 or 3-M 5200. Better, drill the holes out slightly oversized to get to clean surface and inject some thickened epoxy. There's small two part epoxy kits that come thickened, or if you're going with just clear resin add a little talc or wood flower to get it about like yogurt consistancy. A big siringe work well or just drive it in with a nail or whatever.

On the depth sounder if the dawg's trick doesn't work next thing I'd check is if the transducer hasn't kicked up which they're designed to do if they hit somthing or get bonked coming off the trailer or whatever

he text me awhile ago and said that they stopped to clean the weed from the lines, and it started reading bottom.
he probably picked up weeds on the ducer if the lines were getting weeds to.

How about fixing a quad snow plow puncture on a lund flat bottom? Hole is about 3 inches wide and one inch high just below the water line.

ouch!
that sounds like a bad one.
2 pieces purple hubba-bubba mixed with one piece pink.
chew at least twenty minutes to get good and blended together.
once the flavour is pretty much all sucked out, spit the gum out and call a repair guy.

i don't know.
i'd think you need some aluminum welding done to it.
not sure if there's much other options.

I dropped my 9.9 while putting it on while on shore.
Straight through the bottom...1" or so wide, 3" or so long.
Pounded the aluminum flat, and used JB Weld.
Been 12 years, and still holding.

Duct tape and a big bailing bucket

haha.
or, just leave the rear plug out so the incoming water can flow right on out the back.
