first solo success

Everybody bailed out on me. So, 5 am in the truck alone. 6.15 I see a bear ...he is at the edge of the forest but on a privet property...to bad...I drive on.
I went to the same spot three times before this season....very active....always fresh signs...last time I went there, one just got away from me. It is hard area, thick with bushes, lots of ponds, small island like meadows....but very fun to hunt. This time I get into small meadow and see fresh poop; wind in my back; so I move to another side and make a circle through narrow paths and fallen logs. Next meadow- more fresh poop- I hear branches cracking...i move foreword, sneak through bushes towards the sounds of movement, along a pond...there I see him...on a fallen log- walking across the pond. He looks at me, I pull the triger. He is down.

Doing the work all by yourself is totally new ball game. :) He was down at 7:45am ....I was finished with him at 19:00. :)

Awesome job, my first big game kill was solo and a black bear. Learned a lot on that one!

Getting him into wheelbarrow was relatively easy.....but it went only about a foot and the wheel broke :)
Dragging him out of the swamp was a bitch...the first 6 feet in order to get him ready for gutting was hell. After that dragging him to the truck wasnt so bad, but getting him up onto the truck was something else...I ended up quartering him.

You know, if he was a bit further out I would have done it, but I took my chances and ......lost at the end:)
As of for the hide- I already got one rug....so no .... it went to waste.

There is a lot to be said about that ........ but i guess you need to do it in order to understand it......being ready for it .....then doing it......and live to talk about it. )

This board is great to find epic hunting stories of people who go out and do it all by them selfs, and I find it very inspirational.

Nice, I mostly prefer hunting solo. Its more work by yourself, but more rewarding at the table and when you look at the taxi work on the wall. For the last few years when I do hunt with others we all split up and go solo till some one drops something, then we meet up and help each other. Did you keep the skull?

Me and my companions do exactly the same.....go own ways and keep in touch via walkietalkie. I put the whole bear head in the ground ...hope to dig out the scull few months from now.
