A number of HBC members qualify, so if you are in their area, hopefully they can help you out. In the interest of expediency, GREEN scores are fine. if there is a dispute, the entrants need to go to an official scorer, or a scorer that is agreed by me.

As always, I'll be soliciting donations for prizes:). Please let me know if you have anything you can offer. Anything big or small accepted, with gratitude!

*****PLEASE READ THIS*******

Every year I discard entries from the contest, because they haven't followed the simple rules, and it's a real shame. Most of the discarded entries are because people post entries for their non member kids, wives or friends. (Not a member, can't participate, so get those people signed up! You have until end of September!)

Other common reason for discarding entry is when people just put a link in their post, with no photo or other information. There is a simple and easy to use format for entries, so please use it.

So get your relatives signed up, use the form, read the rules again to make sure your entry complies, and have fun! :)

I'm pleased to offer five 10-packs of Q, the healthy energy drink. Each pack converts a bottle of water into clean, honest energy. A friend and I developed this product a few years ago because nobody else had ever put 'health' and 'energy drink' in the same sentence. Its perfect for hunting... it comes in dry stick-packs that weight almost nothing. Add to water and shake for a healthy dose of vitamins and herbal extracts that will recharge your batteries and keep you going when you really feel like you've hit the wall. No sugar rush, no caffeine jitters, just a good push in the right direction.

You can check out the product and order some free samples at www.Qenergydrink.com.

Story or link to story: First day hunt of the Spring up to Princeton for a few hours, was driving down the main road up in Sunday Summit area when at about 300 yards comes this bear at us. Dad stops the truck as the bear starts walking down the slope to the left into the timber. Dad and myself get out and spot him down the slope in thick timber about 200+ yards away, so we cut back onto a bench and start waiting. Not even 10 minutes later, this guy comes walking towards us, not even knowing that we are there. He turns broadside at about 100 yards, so I take a shot and hit him a little low but in the area of the heart/lung. He starts to run uphill as I cycle another round into the chamber. He stops running uphill as I hit him again but this time dead in the boiler room. Legs get wobbly and down he goes. I guess our Spring bear season was cut short! :-D (Story edited)

Thanks for the contest!

Story or link to story:
So i had decided to bring out a school friend for a little bear hunt. Our hunt started at about 5 pm when we got up into the stand. After about sitting for 1 hour and a half we had heard some noise from down below in a thick alder patch. So i got set up and waited, a couple minutes later we could see the silhouette of a bear through the alder, that bear worked its way into a shooting lane but it just looked like a sow, with its short face and legs so i waited...Sure enough the cubs had worked there way up the hill 5 mins later and the trio moved on along the slope.

Once they had cleared the area i had decided that i would be good to head it in early to see if we could get one in the orchard. So i crawled down from the stand, not 15 yards away from it i hear a 'holy crap' from my friend, so i turned around fast to see a bear making its way towards me from the orchard, this bear made eye contact and was showing signs of a predatory attack, i let out a couple 'hey bear!' and it would not stop, having my friend in the stand still with the bear spray and me having only my bow in hand i had no other choice than to draw my bow.

I continued straight towards me in until about 15-20 yards before i had let my arrow fly. My arrow flew straight but the bear had ended up jumping the string and it entered in the eye. On impact he buckled to the ground but then just popped back up and started to run down the steep slope into the thickest brush imaginable. We back out knowing it would be best to give him time and also try to get some back up to go in. So I gave a good hunting friend a call and sure enough he was on his way out with some firepower and great head lamps to try and recover my animal.

We hit the last bloodspot and ended up finding the bear about 50-70 yards away, which was surprising since he had lost so much blood during his 'death run'. If it Wasn't for a good hunting friend for setting me up with the landowner i would not have got this bear, and he also was a huge help in the recovery, so thanks Nolan, could not have asked for a better hunting partner!! I would also like to say that this bear is smaller but im still very happy and proud that i could harvest him, and let me tell ya they do look way bigger when the are coming at you!! Thanks for reading hope you enjoyed!

Story: We drove 800kms from Chilliwack to McBride leaving at "O Dark Early" (4am). We set up base camp and took off in the truck to have a look at the area in preperation for the morning hunt. 15 min into the drive we spotted a black bear down an embankment. I jumped out of the truck and took a shot broadside into his right shoulder. The bear walked about ten feet, laid down and died quickly. After a quick happy dance, I proceeded down the 100 foot hill and realized the bear was on a small island of sorts in the middle of a large swamp. It looked shallow so we attepmted to cross. It turns out what we thought was grass was in fact floating moss that sunk instantly leaving us "tits deep" in a pile of misery. It was almost dark, we were in Grizzly country and decided it best if we try again in the morning. The next day we found an old beat up canoe. We lowered it down the hill to the swamp and got across. After loading the bear and ourselves in to the canoe, a third guy tied a rope from the canoe, up the hill around a truck hitch to a quad and pulled us over the swamp. We hopped out and left Yogi in the boat and used our makeshift pulley system to get him up the hill.

This was my first bear and my first successful hunt in BC after moving from Nova Scotia three years ago. The hunts that are the hardest work are the most memorable and rewarding. If I could do it again, I wouldn't change a thing.

Wondering if anyone else has input about this; I was wondering if kids under the age of 14 could be included in the contest even if they are not members, as long as they have a parent who is a member. My son is 11 and although this site is very well monitored, there are some threads and posts that I dont think are age appropriate for pre-teens. For the record, I am not on Facebook (not that this is much different...) but I gather that you are not allowed to be on Facebook until you are 14. In my opinion this would be an acceptable exception to the rules. Regardless, I do appreciate the effort of those who contribute to the site.
Peace out.

Why not....as kids can start hunting at age 10 for themselves,I don't see any issues with it.
Maybe send Gatehouse a PM and get a clarification if the youths have to be a member or is there parent/guardian good enough ?

Bad luck bull
Well it started as the most organized and planned out hunt I have ever done. We did our homework and knew where we were going to shoot a elk for sure (so we thought).

Well the drive up is where everything started to go wrong. My buddy coming from the otherside of the province of the province was stuck, there was a huge acciendent and the highway was stopped for the night . I slept on the side of the road in my camper that night and he got himself a motel room. It was a horrible nights sleep, thinking that every truck coming in the night was him. He rolled up bright and early, and with a quick hello and coffee we were off.

We arrived to not so good weather, actually the worst rain, thunder and lightning I think I've ever seen. We stayed at my buddy's cabin for the night thinking that we could just take the truck and camper up in the morning and get to our final hunting area. Well the next morning the rain had not let up. We decided to take his truck up and look at the area. We got to the lake we planned to stay at and everything looked good... We drove about 500 yards around the comer and there it was!

It was a 80 foot wide washout!!!! The area we had researched and mapped out on google earth, where we were certain we would get a elk was gone! We hung our heads and drove away. Time for plan B... There was one road that ran parallel to the valley on the otherside. We got back to the highway and drove up the road. We saw 2 spike bulls right away. We decided to pass on even trying for them. The elk were here and we knew we would see more.... So we thought. We spent the next 4 days at plus 30 degrees with nothing but issues.

About 10 kms up a knarley old quad trail my quad decided to quit! Had to tow it out the whole way. We had truck issue, flat tires, and we couldn't even find a mule deer.
I gotta say though the grouse hunting was unreal.

the day before rifle season we finally spotted a monster bull about 800 yards away and about 500 yards straight down a slash ( we spotted him driving 30kms back up the mountian to get my back pack I left on the side of the road!!).

We had decided to go after him the next day. After running into nothing but other hunters thick thick fog and super hot weather we had pretty much given up hope. We went back to the slide out and got our quads across it. It was perfect no hunters and lots of elk tracks. We hunted hard. We put on miles on our boots and quads, but there was just nothing happening. They wernt talking and it seemed we were always 5 mins behind them.

It was Thursday night. I told my buddy "tomorrow I'm hunting where we saw the spike bulls." He agreed and that's where we decided to hunt on FRIDAY THE 13 2013 (the most unlucky day ever!) I told him "it's gonna be an unlucky day for some big bull."

it was 4am and and the alarm went off. We both had no ambition and were low down and beat. We crawled out to the truck and drove up the hill. Got to the slash and quietly got out of the truck. I slowly shut my door and out of no where a loud and proud bugle! Then a chuckle and a bugle. Then down the ridge another one ( holy *^%# we found them) we took off after them, but the wind was all wrong and one little stuck up cow winded us and pointed her nose in the air and took off letting everyone in the country know we were there!!

We quickly left and made a plan for the evening hunt.
My buddy was going to hunt that slash and I was going to hunt lower ( where we thought they may have busted out to).

We split up and I drove to my spot. Just as I got there there was a truck parked in the middle of the road. Somebody beat me there. I quickly turned around a flew up the moutian. Passed my buddy told him what was up and ventured off to the next slash. I parked my quad on the road and started slowly walking in. I got to the landing and started following trialls through the slash. Up and over down and around until I saw my spot. A old blown down tree with a root ball sticking. Up. I walked down it and set up on the root ball. It was perfect overlooking a slash with thick bush surrounding it. I took a look around and saw a rub right on the bushline. I looked directly down wind and thought " hmm that looks nice but no elk will ever come out down there" there was a branch in the way so I broke it off to make a rest just in case. I looked up the hill down the valley and then glanced back down wind. Odd (I thought to myself) that branch wasn't there a min ago. Put my binos up and he turned his head!!!!

Everythig happend in meer seconds. I counted 6 grabbed my gun put it on his shoulder, he took one step and BOOOM! Dropped him in his tracks.

I walked down to where he was....... There he was the bull of a lifetime. I started counting 9x7 with crowns. Holy #^%* I just shot a royal!

I would like to thank my buddy for all his help! Couldn't have done it without you buddy! That ******* was not a fun pack out.

JP and Sarg, in the rules at the top of the page it states: "All entrants *MUST* be members of HBC no later than Sept 30/2013"

I understand your concerns about the young ones on here and some of the content. Both my kids have had accounts for some time. IF they wanted on here WE did it together.

As always, if you do see a post of concern use the "report a post" function. We do our best to keep things civil and clean, but there's some 12000 members that can help us if inclined.

So to answer the question, unless they had accounts prior to Sept 30, sadly they cannot enter. Doesn't mean they can't join now and enter any future contests. Now if Gatehouse decides otherwise, great!

Great entries guys, keep them coming! :)

Once again, thanks to the prize donators. As usual we have some of our regulars being very generous!

I'd like to do a bit of groveling here for more donations if anyone has anything to add to the contest. We can always use prizes, the more the merrier!

As well- If you contacted me abotu a prize and you dont' see it listed here, it means I've been negligent and forgot it. I've had a very busy year and I'm not as on top of things as I would like. So PM me again....thanks! :)

Story: Yesterday I made the decision to try and get out and fill my goat tag. Since I had no one who could make it for the hunt, I decided to go solo and push hard to see what I could get done. I left the house at 6AM and made the drive out to my zone. A pair of waders helped me cross the river in the pre-dawn light. I hiked for about 35 minutes before spotting my first billy. He was in the trees and disappeared before I got a good look at him. His positioning wasnt right for a stalk, and I didnt know how big he was so decided to leave him and keep hiking.

A bunch of kilometers and a few hours later, I stopped to do some glassing at what I had decided would be the furthest point I'd go for the day. It was nearly 1130 when I spotted 3 goats way up high in the snow on a ridge. Through the scope, the billy looked good, and I remember thinking how promenent his glands were behind his horns. I unloaded all the 'unneccessary' gear from my pack and started the trek upwards.
At 350 yards, I saw the goat on the skyline and verified it was the Billy. It was a high uphill angle and I'd only have time for one shot, so I decided I'd leave him and try and get closer. I didnt want to risk having him get hit and make it to the other side before I could anchor him. The wind swirled every direction which had me second guessing my choice!
I kept going upwards and thought I had busted the goats off the ridge. I caught sight of the back of one goat at 100 yards or so, but could not verify which one it was. While I was finding a position to get settled in, the billy peeked out from over a rock ledge at 85 yards. I pulled my rifle up, but with the steep angle I couldnt get behind my scope. I still had my pack on which made things very tough to get steady. He was looking right at me which made movement near impossible. I unclipped my pack and kept the one shoulder strap looped around my left arm so my pack wouldnt slide down the hill. The billy turned and the Nanny/kid popped over the ledge and looked at me.
A short few seconds later the Billy appeared to the left of the ledge in a nice little saddle. I quickly got on him and shot him rbetween the shoulders. He stood there motionless as I reloaded, sending another his way. This caused him to turn and the nanny and kid started to scramble. I shot a third time quickly, folding him. He started to tumble down towards me as I reloaded. For a brief moment, I thought about trying to stop him from tumbling down the mountain as he headed down the hill, but that thought was quickly replaced by common sense when I realized how fast he was going by the time he got to me. He passed me at 5 yards or so and continued down towards a big cliff I had hiked around to get to the group. You guessed it...he bailed right off that cliff with tremendous speed.
By the time I got down to him, I had already come to the conclusion that my goat had been busted up and in horrible condition after his fall. Very ironic as I had passed opportunities to kill goats in 'bad' spots where they would tumble or fall in the past. I was pleasantly surprised that he hadnt busted off anything and other than being dirty with some torn skin and a torn ear, he was in great shape. All the bones in his face were broken and he had nearly bit his tongue off and both of his lips were peeled back a few inches.
The long pack back to the truck by myself was grueling. I was home by 10PM though and I had my goat!!

Not much of a story, but I'm smiling anyway. Took Joshua and my dad out for a late day hunt today, headed out to Heckman Creek FSR first, not much sign there, so we headed out to South Fork Road. If any of you decide to head out that way, maybe bring a chainsaw, I didn't have one and the road is blocked by a few trees at the 10K marker, cutting off a LOT of good White Tail hunting. Anyway, we cruised around there a while, spooked a couple, but they were too quick. The day was winding down, so we headed out and took the road that swings left at the 3K marker, not sure of the name. We barely made it past the 6K mark when my dad called out, "DEER!" I brought the truck to a stop ad we all piled out, I headed up the bank first, with Joshua just a few steps behind me, the first doe, a little one, started to book it, but as luck should have it there was a nice sized looking one still standing there checking us out. Joshua got up beside me, brought his .243 to bear and BANG! Down she went! Went up to check her out, he took her a little high, through the lung and out the shoulder just below the spine. She was done, but needed a mercy finisher in the head.

Here's the proud boy with his prize.

Story or link to story:
Late summer early season i had been scouting for a goodwhitetail in a heavily pressured area. (that includes dirt bikers, hunters, hikers, and offroaders...) Even though the deer where pressured I knew the areahad good genetics and the deer would just be bunking in the timber. Being veryfamiliar with the area because of previous years hunting there, i figured ijust needed to put my time in to pull out a 'cranker'. So by the first week of Septemberi had a couple spots nailed with does hitting my cam like clockwork... Withthis i knew it was just a matter of time..

It took a couple months but one day hiking down through aold growth patch i jumped a ‘regular’ 3 does but this time accompanied with agagger!! He popped up and took off with the does leaving me standing theredumbstruck with bow in hand!! Up until this weekend i had hunted that area inhopes of seeing the same big guy but with no such luck. Now my mom was startingto get mad because both my dad and myself have not shot a deer yet and shewanted venison!! Meat sometimes is more important than bone, so i had set mystandards to at least a basket buck/ or bow season doe!

Just yesterday i had decided it would be a good idea tohead out, do my regular hike, and burp every ten feet try to interest the bigguy or his ‘kid’. When i had arrived to my trail head a bit latter than i wouldhave liked i was pleasantly surprised to hear probably at least 5 dirt bikerstearing up my hunting grounds. Being public land i had just decided to moveonto a different area about 4 clicks away where i have also hunted before andsee if i can find any fresh sign. It had only took me about 2 hours to find agreat patch of thick timber with a natural bluff/meadow on one side and surroundedby old growth timber all around... Doing some investigating, i had came acrosstons of fresh tracks and a big rub line. Following the rub line i had spotted 3does bedded in the timber with only a little buck.. They eventually caught mywind and spooked, so i carried on down this rubline, and spotted 2 more doeswithout a buck! Being mid November this had me a bit confused.. Soo..

I had decided to back out and get back there tomorrow.(today)This am my plan was to hike up to that same bluff/meadow, sit, and try arattling sequence with a bit of grunts, and that is what i did.
Now It was about 10 minutes into my calling sequence andi had just ended my second rattling session, i was getting itchy to start myway down the rub line to another setup. Just as i peered up to see if the coastwas clear to gather my stuff, a buck was standing not 40 yards from me. His vitalshidden behind a huge fir with only head and neck showing, i raised my rifle slowlyand waited for a shot, within seconds he began to trot forward; i let out amew, and let fly. He kicked back abruptly giving me a good idea he was hit good!!Gave him about ten minutes and then put my dog on the track found him about 50yards later, and im one happy guy!! He is a beautiful little 4x3 that i will Europeanmount, and first deer ever that i rattled in and harvested!! Now with some meatin the freezer, i will be chasing some bone come bow season!! Good luck to everyone! http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/smilies/biggrin-new.png P.S. With my dads knees being bad, i had a friend that lives close by help with the drag. Thanks to my friend i got him out in one piece, so i appreciate his help!! KTK also offered but we had him already in the truck! Thanks for the offer though Nolan! Great having a bunch of good hunting partners/ and friends willing to help at a moements notice!!

I found a rancher with some wolf issues, and she was kind enough to let the Dawg run free in her yard, as it were.

First one down, a young female, and more to come, we hope!

We have at least 3 more ranchers tee'd up for the winter, so we hope to get out and whack some more doggies!

Rifle Season Oct 20th to 26th-
Well I was back at work and with the short season I would only get 2 full days to hunt and just a couple hours every day after work as it getting dark early, shooting light is gone about 6:45

Long story short went out every day. With no rain and colder weather it was hard to tell fresh tracks and I was getting no response to my calls.

I was hearing other people were getting some moose down and frustration was starting to set in as most of the moose being shot were by road hunters (no disrespect intended, I road hunt until I see sign then it's game on) and I had put in the time and miles on foot. On Friday after work I was going to take the afternoon off and then hunt hard Saturday which was the last day of the season. I got home after work and was sitting on the couch still thinking about just staying home and relaxing. I forced myself off the couch and told my wife, I have to go and try. I drove out to where I had my close encounter in bow season and planned on walking in giving some calls. The sun was starting to set and it would be in my eyes if a moose came out before it set so I decided to walk a different skid trail with sun at my back. As I left the truck I gave a cow call then headed up the trail, right around the first corner I heard something coming out of the timber and a bull came out at about 60 yards and started running away from me up the trail. Nothing but ass, legs and horns as he ran away from me. As he was running I gave couple of loud Bull grunts and he stops at 125 yards and turns broadside giving me a perfect shot in the vitals with my 270win. One shot and he drops in his tracks, didn't even take a step.

I can't believe my luck, I had a beer in my pack and thought it would be good to give a him few minutes to bleed out before going up to him as I could see his antlers move a bit and the way he dropped I didn't think he would go anywhere. I cracked a beer, lit up a smoke and just thinking how lucky I was he dropped right on the trail and I could drive my truck right to him. All of a sudden halfway through my smoke the moose stands up and takes a couple steps toward the thick timber, oh shit I think and put another shot in the vitals. He takes a couple more steps and is off the trail but only behind a few alders one more shot in the vitals and I can see his legs wobble then down he goes again. This time I get my ass up there in case I have to make sure he stays down. He is dead when I get to him, the deed is done, I can tell right away this is the same Bull that came to 10 yards in the bow season. I can still get my truck to within 20 feet and pull him out with a grab chain. I get back into town and get some help from my buddy in getting the guts out and the meat cooling, dam he is a big animal so we decide to get more help and come back in the morning and get him in daylight. My son and buddy were ready to go at 6:30 and we had him home 10:30 a few hours of skinning and quartering plus a few beers and photos and he was hanging in the shed.

Story: I had a great day of hiking and glassing, seeing three young two points and multiple does I had already considered my first day of my trip successful. But the day was not over.... when the afternoon was getting late I glassed this boy up. I made a clean 300 yard shot and ended up finishing the pack out at roughly midnight. High adventure and high tines, the perfect day.

A great morning to say the least. Up at 4:45am, and left the house at 5:20am. Peaceful walk in to my stand, and in it by 6:20am. 7:00am, snap, still a bit dark for the sights on my bow, out walks a nice 2 point (later on determined it was a 3x2 with brows). I had to let him walk, it was to difficult to see my sights and I was not sure of the shot.

I thought that may be it for my stand for the day, but I decided to stick it out, anything can happen during the rut. It was really quiet until 8:40am, snap, a soft grunt and out comes a buck, 50 yards away, . He stopped and looked around, and then started working his way toward me, 45, 40, and then 35 yards and turned broadside. He stared into the bush and I heard another buck grunting and working his way over to the opening. Now was my chance, I drew back, put the pin on his chest, and I MISSED, just over his back. He jumped up and moved about 5 or 6 yards away and turned broadside again, I had already nocked an arrow, figured shot high, now he is further, so same pin and I let it fly. Wack, crash, two impacts I heard, one was the deer, other was the ground behind him, complete pass through.

He jumped up, and ran about 20 yards, stopped, he flicked his tail and licked his lips, and then began to wobble, down to his knees. Then out of the woodwork the 3x2 I saw earlier in the morning put on a full charge and ran right into my buck and basically tossed him a good 8-10ft through the bush, and continued to try and fight him. What I sight to see! By the time I got the camera out it was over, but I got a video of the buck afterwards when he decided to leave my buck alone.

I gave myself some time to calm down, I was shaking like crazy at this point. I then gave the revved up 3x2 time to calm down and I climbed out of my treestand and made my way over. The 3x2 didn't seem to care I was there, but eventually left the scene and disappeared.

Feels so good to get the Bow out this year and bag a buck. Been a while.

It was also great to get this guy in the morning, cause it allowed me to snap better photos in the area where I actually got him. I guess my season is over, it has been an awesome one, the spring/summer preparations sure paid off this year!

Below is the story I originally posted the day after harvest.

Still do not know what to say. Last night was the perfect conditions. Got to my stand around 2:45. Got settled in for an evening hunt. On my way to the stand I noticed several fresh rubs, but not much for tracks. Other nights out to this location I have seen some large tracks, and there are some historical rubs in this area that make my heart skip everytime I see them. I have never seen any huge bucks in this area, but I knew they were there. 5:20pm my time was running out, when all of a sudden out he walks, except 75 yards out (had a wish this was a rifle zone moment). He crossed the opening, I gave him a soft grunt, he stopped, look in my direction, and then disappeared into the woodwork. 5:30pm, a different buck walks out from where he went in, a nice 3 point, another buck 2 point, and then again he crossed the same opening where he was at 5:20pm. I had a feeling they were following a doe. They all disappeared into the woods, and I could hear the odd branch crack, but I was thinking that was it, next time. Sunset was at 5:54pm, time was running out, all of a sudden at 5:58pm, out walks a doe, and right behind her, here he comes, stuck to her like glue, he even gave a soft grunt while following and the doe mewed back. They were now at 40 yards, and the doe decided that was enough and she jumped back into the woods. He was quartering pretty hard toward me and I had probably 2 yards and he would be back in the woods with the doe. So I let the 00 buck fly, and bang flop! I let out a WOOOOO! I was so pumped, I knew he was a big guy, but he grew when I got down to him, way bigger than I thought he was. Definitely a old mature Blacktail buck. I could not be happier. I had him out of the bush by 7:10pm and was home by 8pm. Still super stoked!

Story:
This year I didn't have very many days that I could hunt because of school and gym and hockey and a part time job so when I finally did get to go out with my dad i told him that i wasn't going to be picky. We saw lots of deer around first light and then at about 9 we were glassing a big draw and had seen a few does bedded when all of a sudden from out of no where a big buck showed up. We got our gear together real quick and started to close the distance. It is real open so we tried to drop out of sight behind a little hill as we approached but another doe busted us and all the deer took off before I could get a shot at the buck. We walked for 4 hours to try and find him but never did. I was a bit upset cause he was a nice buck but we still had the afternoon. So we headed to a different hill and walked for a bit more but no luck there either. We were on our way back when I spotted another deer. I looked through my binos and told my dad it is just another doe. He looked through his binos and said that yes it was a doe ... a whitey doe ... which was open for me because of the youth season. He told me that it was all by herself and asked if I wanted to try to get it and I said yes. So I got a good rest and one shot and it was over and then the work began to get it to the truck. So i didn't get to go much but it was a good day when I finally did!

A buddy and I decided a long hike into a remote burn may be exactly the spot we needed to be and we weren't disappointed. We knew going in it was a 2 man 1 buck kind of trip so with that in mind we made a pact on no dink 4 points. It was steep and frozen and a lot harder to see then we had anticipated, funny how it always works that way. After splitting up once we hit the burn in the morning and me spending most of the day on my ass slipping and sliding across the frozen slope I decided to head up hill to where my partner was so we would be a little closer together to start making our way out of there. I had seen quite a few does and did turn down a couple of the aforementioned dink 4 points and as soon as I turned uphill I spotted a few bedded does on a knob above me as well as a nice but young 3 point directly in my path to the top. They stood up, mingled around a bit and walked out of sight. I decided to find a place to sit and have a snack and a drink of water, which turned out to be frozen solid and give them a bit of time to move on and calm down. After about 15 minutes I started back up the hill and after clearing 2 more benches I came upon them again, this time there were about 8 does the 3 point and this guy. I was in the wide open and with no rest I quickly took off my pack for the steep up hill shot. He was about 200 yds away and perfectly broadside...boom....clean miss...oh no! I knew I had fell on my rifle quite a few times that day and panic was starting to set in. He started moving to my left across and up the ridge so I started doing the same. I made it to a tree and found a better rest and waited for him to come into an opening with a big windfall in it. When he got there he hesitated for a split second and the 2nd shot was money. He dropped like a rock, tried to get back up and kicked over backwards sliding down the hill towards me for about 200 feet to his final resting place. After that being later in the day things happened very quickly A very excited hunting partner showed up and we snapped a few pictures and began to quickly quarter and de-bone for the long pack out. The trip out wasn't as bad as it could have been and got us back to our ride just after dark, your turn next year Christian!

Went up to Campbell River this weekend with a friend and our boys (both 8yrs old), took all of 45 min to get one on the ground.
Wish I had an exciting story, but wasn't much to it. Left Duncan at 4:30 am Fri morn, and got to where my friend (who knows the area well) wanted to hunt by about 7:20. Came up on a bit of a swampy area and I said something like "looks like a nice place for a moose, if we had any" (buddy agreed), and drove on. Got about 30 feet when I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. This guy had just pushed a doe out of the timber and was moving along the edge of the swamp, maybe 130 yards out.
I think my favorite part of the whole weekend was hearing "YAAA!!! You got him, Dad!!" First successful hunt with my boy by my side.

Story or link to story: a late morning sneak up one of my hillsides rewarded me with some extra winter meat. The moss was soft and the light wind was right in my face as I snuck along the rocky side hill. I slowed to an extreme when I started hearing some scratching noises in a nearby thicket. As I got closer a bird flushed out of the dry leaves he was scratching. A few more steps and I look uphill fifty yards and I can see the tips of antlers.... He was laying in his bed licking his back when I put a quick shot through his neck. He had no idea, perfect. Taking a blacktail in his bed was a first for me and I can hardly wait to get back out there. Cheers. MW

Story or link to story:
as elk season began there was lots of sign and lots of elk around, but the elk really weren't too responsive, they were over cautious coming into calls and willing to ditch their cows and take off at first sign of danger. around the 20th of september the weather was due to change and the frost was supposed to set in, so my dad and i took a week off work each and packed up to hunt hard every day. The first day sept 23rd we got into some elk in a couple of different spots but no legal bulls were around and the weather was still rather mild. Sept 24th we woke up to a heavy frost and it was significantly colder than previous days. this was a good sign. first light we were in a spot we knew there was a legal bull due to pre season scouting. walking through the trees we got a response, my dad backed away calling as he went, and i crept towards the call eyes peeled. their calling stopped so i posted up and listened silently for a good half hour but nothing. i headed over to were they had called from and fresh sign was there, but so was a couple of coyotes darting through the trees. so around 10 we headed to a different spot, began hiking a ridge as my dad was 100yards down the bank calling. A loud bugle screamed from up hill from me, as i looked i saw roughly 25 elk rising from their beds. i immediately saw two bulls, one was a smaller 6, and the other i counted on his left antler a tine sticking up, one to the left, one to the right and one sticking down all from one crown on the top of his antler, with those and two eye guards i knew he was more than a 6. i took a good rest laying on a rock, as he was facing directly towards me i put one right in the front of his neck at 285 yards. he dropped instanty. as the other bull was standing broadside 150 yards away now i realized he was a 6x7, i tried getting my dad to take him to for a double header but he couldnt quite see him from his position and with the two of us already with a ton of work on our hands, figured we'd leave him for someone else. Awesome experience, was my first elk. crazy how much you learn everytime you go out!

Went to check out a new area in region 3. I got there late fri night and drove up to top of mountain. I slept in back of truck. I woke up in am to a beautiful sunny day. I went for a drive, started seeing deer right away. Within 45 min of driving I saw 26 Muley deer. They were all doe except for one which was a small spiker. I let him walk away. I drove down the mountain and saw a bull moose with Palm on one side and 3 spikes on other.
I saw so many deer that morning I figured I'd go back up to the top on mountain and crashed there for the night. The weather was getting nasty , started to rain. Poured for along time, then I could not hear
the rain on the canopy no more. The rain turned to snow . We'll the problem was I was in a two wheel drive truck and I did have chains. 4:30 in the am I decided to get out of there. It was snowing so hard,it was a freakin blizzard, I could not see the road. Whiteout . By then there 6 inches of snow. There were some very steep hills I was worried about , but I made it down without chains. I went down lower to evade the snow . I drove around checking out new areas. It was really foggy and rainy. It was about 2:00 pm Sunday , so I decided to head home . On my way out, I spotted this deer about 50 yrds in the bush, I stopped the truck jumped out ran back to see if this whitetail was still there. Well sure enough he was , bang flop. Yes :) . I went up to deer and make sure it was dead, then back to truck to cancel tag. Took off jacket put it in the truck to go gut this deer. I was just ready to stick a knife in it , when a truck pulled up (first vehicle I've seen all morning ) well it was a Conservation Officer ,
He came up to where I was with the deer and asked me to see my hunting licence . (I'm sure he thought that I hadn't canceled my tag yet) I told him that it was in the truck, so down the truck we go to get license. He was happy to see the cancelled tag and told me I was the only one that got a deer that he's had checked all day.

Took the week off for our annual November mule deer hunt. Heading back to a familiar spot we've had success before we knew there would be lots of bucks around this time of the year. First morning dad and I spot this buck at the top of a cut block with a single doe. We confirm was legal 4 pt. I asked dad if he wants to take him. He said no still early in the trip. I had another look through my binos and decided he was a solid buck. And I would be happy to take him with dad at my side. I ranged him at 392 yrds. Was great trip with lots of memories.

Story or link to story:

This years Moose hunt had us going up a few weeks earlier than usual because of my work schedule. I didn't know how the moose would respond to calling. Moose sightings were a little low compared to years past but the sign was there we just had to keep at it. My brother was hunting a cut block and had a bull respond to him in the morning and seen the racked bull just inside the bush. He couldn't get a better visual, the bull faded back into the timber and went silent. He decided to check out another spot that evening and I went to try for the bull he'd seen. I worked my way up to the corner of the block where the bull was in the morning. I found a nice vantage point and settled in the evening. Much to my surprise after only being there for 20 mins. I heard a faint grunt. And it was still early afternoon. I thought maybe I was mistaken. I kept quite listening, yep. SOB. confirmed grunt, maybe 200 yards in the timber. Over the course of the next 2.5 hours I was calling to him back and forth. sometimes he would go quite for 20 min or so. I intended to sound like a small aggressive bull. Not cow calling at all. I figured it was pre rut. And that the bulls would be kind of establishing whos who in the area.
it wasn't until the sun went down that I figured he was finally slowly making his way out to the cut block. Finally antler tips! Once I seen it should be a good bull. I got pretty shaky. The bull step out. I put up my binos. Bull is maybe 100 yards. No way I can count points because I am shaking to bad. So I put my head down staring at my feet for a min or two trying to calm my nerves. Meanwhile the bull is getting closer and closer. I never called at all when he stepped out because I knew he would pinpoint me right away. I look up. 60 yrds tops! count 1,2,3. double check. Yup. A few 140 AB's and it was all over. Went back to camp on cloud 9. Got the boys and made the trek back in to recover the bull. Cant wait till next year!

Story: Many hours in a stand watching does come and go. The weather had warmed up a bit from the -25 we had earlier in the week. I was holding out for a buck but would take one of the does on the next day if no bucks showed. About 100 yards behind my stand I heard the fence squeak. I figured it was likely another hunter wandering around the area as I did not expect a deer to hit the fence. A couple minutes later I could hear something approaching, slowly turned my head to see this guy coming in. One of the biggest bucks I've seen this year so I'll take it. Nice end to a somewhat slow season.

Story or link to story: After our first day of hunting, we met up with our hunting partner, with about an hour of hunting light left. We were talking when he mentioned that he saw a little 2-point mule deer buck at the turn-around point on a side logging road earlier in the day. Still being able to shoot mule deer bucks in that region until the 10th of November, we hopped in the truck and took off. We arrived at the spot with enough shooting light left. While my dad and I geared up to brace the rough side hill produced by loggers, our hunting partner glassed the hill. All of a sudden, he goes "there! very top! the same buck with two does"! Me and my dad quickly hurried to the bottom of the hill. While I set up on a log, my dad cleared some brush in front, blocking the view of the buck. When the time was right, I squeezed the trigger on a buck that was quartering up the hill. I hit him just behind the heart/lung while my second shot took out the lungs. I was really excited to finally take my first ever buck!

You can check out the product and order some free samples at www.Qenergydrink.com (http://www.Qenergydrink.com).

Bring her up for some bear hunting so she can have a third entry next year.

BHB

No way! This is her draw and she certainly has her own opinion on everything!

Now, she'll want to put in for grizz! LOL!

No way! I certainly didn't expect this! What an awesome surprise. I'll echo Coach above, and extend my gratitude to ALL that donated, you guys go above and beyond and are truly the heart and soul of this site.

And, on that note, I'll have to send Blacktail a PM and begin discussions about my new KNIFE!! Wahoooo! Maybe it'll even touch a Stone's sheep this summer?

Again, cheers folks!

We just need to get you out more often just so you can share your experiences.
Your recount of your whitetail hunt was quite the exercise in wordsmanship.
Great hunt.
Great story.
Congrats.

My dad was spot on. When I found out I won first place for youth I was so happy! I want to thank Weatherby Fan for the prize donations (along with the other awesome prize donators, I can't leave you guys out), I'll certainly take the rifle! Apparently there is going to be three 270s in the rifle locker now. My dad's, my grandpa's old one, and mine!:mrgreen::mrgreen: I would also like to thank Gatehouse for hosting this awesome contest. First time putting in and I'm absolutely stoked, also trying not to be the 'suck up' here.

Once again thank you so much and congratulations to the prize winners! - SsS

******WINNERS PLEASE POST YOUR CHOICE ON THIS THREAD SO EVERYONE CAN KEEP UP TO DATE******

As for myself, I am going to assume that my pick is somewhere in the mix with the HBC swag, but how am I supposed to know if that is the case? Are we waiting for each winner to post there choice?

Thanks so much, My day bought me that exact same pair of binoculars just not german made a couple of years ago. I thought the pack might be a little big for me too, but it's something I don't already have. So if it's ok with you I'll take the pack. I can always get my Dad to get me a smaller one that fits then we can trade. Ha Ha

Thanks Bucker, good luck this year too.

So there is a budding young bowhunter on here goes by Bc Deer Hunter that lives in Kelowna. I figure he can use the certificate to Hardcore more than I can, partly since I live so far away, so I'm passing it on to him. PM's have been sent.

Thanks again to the sponsors and to Gatehouse!

Sorry everyone, I promised some Q Energy Drink to Gatehouse but never actually found my way over to this thread.

First, congratulations to the winners. Some great animals and stories.
Second, thanks the Gatehouse for organizing and the generous donations from people like Weatherby Fan.
Third, I promised five separate prizes, each of a 10 pack of Q. Its a healthy energy drink that is perfect for hunting, especially when weight matters.

If you are one of the winners, send me a PM and I'll get the Q on its way.

Seeing Bugler pass his gift certificate on is a great reminder of the cool people on this site.

Since it would take a lot more than an hour with Coach to fix my Slice, short game, Putting, staying out of the bunker, hitting out of the bunker, not breaking the rake in the bunker, paying the golf club for a new rake for the bunker, and all the beers I drink out of frustration, I'll take the Pack Alarm.

Thanks to all the effort guys and all the donations, much appreciated, its what helps make the site great.
