Gunner

Yesterday the vet came, and my namesake Gunner was gone.He has stood at my side for 15 years. He never refused a retrieve except sandhill cranes in Saskatchewan,he would not touch them.Ducks, geese, grouse and pheasants,he brought them all in quietly and professionally, the same way he did everything. He stood by me through a traumatic divorce, and helped me deal with the last 8 years as I have fought my cancer. We were told 6 months ago that he suffered from kidney disease and only had a couple of weeks left.He soldiered on,not in pain but clearly fading. It was clear last weekend his time was coming and the vet told me that I had to act or there would be pain.He passed quietly and very quickly.I won't get another pup,I don't have the time required left to me,and between Gunner and his best pal Boomer my wife and I have enough memories to last several lifetimes. We will meet them again one day at the Rainbow Bridge, till then they are always loved and never forgotten. Gunner(Murray McLennan) RIP My Friend.

Sorrry to hear that Murray. You have been through some tough times, I bet Gunner was part of the therapy. Maybe you should consider another partner though , you don't need that hole in your life.

My condolences for your loss, every dog owner understands and feels your pain. Gunner was a handsome dog and sounds like a great hunting partner.

Maybe not enough years left to you to train a new gun puppy, but perhaps consider adopting an older dog that also has burned some years already, they are the hardest dogs to re-home and would make a great companion.

I would like to thank you all for your kind words and thoughts, they have been a help to me throughout what has been the hardest time of my life. There was always a question of who would pass on first,Gunner or myself. He stuck with me as long as he possibly could, neither of us wanted to leave the other behind.Because of my illness I guess my emotions are quite out of hand, and it is very difficult for me to handle the fact that when I get up,he isn't there. He will never be forgotten, and we will meet again soon.Once again many thanks to you all. Murray, Don't apologize for your feelings I lost a hunting partner and companion of 17 yrs over 20 yrs ago and dispite many great sucessors his memory still bring salt to my eyes. We the true dog (wo)men get it and feel for you. Try to remember, for gundogs and their partners there is no Rainbow Bridge "only" lush fields and marshes holding plenty of birds where the season never ends.

Hey Mur, I was trundling through here to take care of some other stuff, and finally decided to try and right something. Read this post a couple times, but like others I am sure, just couldn't form a sentence through the fog.
Gunner was a riot and I am lucky to have known you both, and Boomer. Hand feeding Gunner bacon is a memory that will unlikely fade. You and Denise did very good by those two, and all one can do. I am so sorry, and wish I could do more.
I hope to get out to see you very soon.
