the odds of your second choice must be below 1:1 if you want to have a chance of getting it. Otherwise, you're pretty well out of luck.

The thing most people don't understand is that second choice odds are not published. So even though your second choice was .5:1 and there were 50 draws that meant that 25 people applied. What we don't know is that possibly 100 people picked it as their second choice, giving your second choice a chance of 3:1

Yes I put in for a goat draw that ended up being 0.9:1 odds and got it for my second choice. Unfortunately I found out why it was good odds as it was a nearly impossible area to access...... Needless to say I didn't get a goat. There is a reason for crappy odds!

I have had my second choice twice, I use it time and time again. If I don't get my first choice (popular) I usally get my second choice, its an **shole place to hunt, but I can more times than not I can call a bull out

Second picks are really only good for oddaball draws. You can pick a second that is really low like a 1.5:1 or somethig like that but most often you will be better off choosing a GOS for your species. I do know a few guys that do get a lucky second on Grizzly, but that means a big flexibility on time and money usually.

Like others have mentioned you can only get your second choice if the odds are below 1:1. And that is based on last years odds. A 1:1 in the regs this year can end up being 10:1 when all the names are drawn as people see the low odds and apply there. You have to remember, everyone's first choice odds are looked at before anyone's second choice, that's how it works. You will also get people telling you they got their second choice moose hunt that had odds of 20:1. In thses cases I would bet my hunting rifle they screwed up their application and actually got their first choice hunt and not their second choice. I have received about 5 or 6 second choice goat hunts. All the odds were less then .3:1 and were for years.

I once got a second choice moose hunt in 5-15a....... No moose killed but lots seen on other side of boundary 5-2b Grrrrr

Got my second choice for goat. First choice was around 4:1, second choice was .8:1

Nope, but 2 years ago a guy I work worth got his second choice in an area I applied as my first choice and drew a nil. The only reason I can fathom is I was at reduced odds that year.

The other possibility is a data entry error - either by your co-worker with a mistake/illegible writing filling out the card, or by whoever was under the gun to get all those last minute entries typed in as quickly as possible :)
