While sitting watching the idiot box I noticed a " bump " under the fur on my lab..I cleared the hair back and pulled something out... then turned on the lights to find myself holding a tick..

will take Ebony in tomorrow am to see whats up..not all ticks carry Lymes? I couldn't seem to see a "head" however not sure if I missed it..soesnt seem to be anything under the skin..just a little raised irritation...anyone have more experience with this??

I've pulled many off my dogs and have squished a couple on myself before they got dug in.

I did a quick internet search on how to pull them out. Our vet bills are high enough to start with. It is pretty obvious when you get the whole thing. Their heads are quite small. Once I pulled too hard on the body and it burst, leaving the head inside the dog but the dog never showed any signs of problem, I think her body either expelled the head or digested it. I've never been worried about Lyme's. I don't think it is a dog problem but a google search will bear that out.

Funny story... one of my dogs got a tick smack dead-center on the top of her skull. I removed it cleanly but it left a weird bump. Just to be on the safe side I applied a couple doses of hydrogen peroxide to kill any infection. Now she has a white, hairless bump, surrounded by reddish hair, on her perfectly black head. It is getting better by the day but it looked pretty funny for a while.

hmmm I did google ticks/dogs..and it did not look like a deer tick..with the red..but the common dog tick..Im pretty sure it all came out I did pull in line with the body and we cut some hair away and it doesn't look like anything is left in there..however will call the vets...sheesh after 3 decades of dogs..first tick found..

Susan is pretty hyped...and convinced me to flush it down the toilet..wrong decision..should have kept it to show the vet..CRAP..

I have pulled ticks of one of my dogs and he is good.
You are right not all ticks carry Lyme disease.
Here are some facts you might want to browse through
http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/id-mi/lyme-fs-eng.php#s3

You can get the dog vaccinated but from what I hear it's not a 100% reliable vaccine.
Good luck!

Two years ago my husky lost the movement in his legs and became paralyzed that's when my wife rushed him into our local vet. After combing and searching for any sign of injury the vet was certain it was a tick that had caused the paralysis. They treated him with a anti herbacide* treatment and gave him a tick ointment between his shoulder blades which was supposed to keep ticks from causing him any problems for an entire year. Since then I've Given him the treatment every year and no problems what so ever. They never did find the the to as huskys have incredibly thick hair and fur but within a day he was back to his normal self.

When the ticks are burried in just cover them with petroleum jelly and they will back rite out as they breath through there back end when the head is burried this works great.

I bought a tick twister to get two out of my daughter's dog. Seemed to work quite well. I read in line that it takes 36 hours for the tick to put bad stuff in the dog but that's internet info.

There's a 'once a month pill' as well as other medicines available (best ones are from the vet hosp.) that help to discourage ticks, fleas etc. from taking up residence on dogs and cats. They aren't a positive repellant like deet products, but they do help. As for ticks in your area, haven't heard of it being a problem with lymes disease yet like down south-east BC. and the Rockies. March through to May are the worse months. I've found the areas from the north of side of Carpenter Lake, across in a line above and past Pavilion Lake, Vidette Lake, and south of Red Lake to contain heavy infestations (area east of Pavilion Lake is really bad) and the east side of Kalamalka Lake is simply terrible along the power line and down to the water.

I manage a pet food store here on Vancouver Island,,and I have had many dog owners in looking for tick repellent..one customer had over 20 ticks on his dog after his normal walk in the woods..he had used this area for many years and never had a problem..not sure why there is such a large amount beening picked up this year,,much different than other years,,I have been keeping an eye on my dogs and nothing so far,,but many others coming in looking for treatments..

I forgot to ask Steven, was the tick engorged or her usual small self? Chances are if she were still small and not attached, she would not puke her saliva or whatever it is that she regurgitates.

indeed, i used to hike all the time in the hills between savona and cache creek.
over the course of each hike, i'd have picked off about a dozen ticks.
also very bad for them was out tranquille.

never knew kal was that bad.
in all the time i spent in kelowna, i never once saw a tick.

in all the time i spent in kelowna, i never once saw a tick. While living in the Okanagan, I only ever had one tick on me. That was over a 26 year period. I picked her up just down from Postill Lake.
My sisters on the other hand, were tick magnets. Every outing to the hinterland in tick season culminated with a thorough motherly inspection and tick removal.
Concern back then was more for Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, Lyme Disease was unheard of and is more of a recent concern.

I have taken ticks off of me. Put the tick in a medicine bottle with moist cotton baton. Then take it to get tested. Fraser health will do it for free. And I have about six tick keys around here. They are the best for removing ticks. Lymes is very painful. So get them tested.

Ebay for the tick keys.

I have picked up two of them in Oliver last year. I had to lift the dogs up into the box of the truck. Stupid me no flea and tick collars. A five hour drive then home. I took my shirt off and one fell out of my beard. I told the wife and she was freaking out. There was one totally engorged on my back. She used the tick key. Took them to get tested, They both came back negative. Had one on my chest last month while cutting firewood in the Fraser valley. He was just pinching me. He was tossed out the window on the way home.

Was glassing a cut near the Fraser valley on Sunday, looked over at my buddies dog and saw a ssmall on crawling on his fur so I was able to kill it before it got a chance to bite. First tick I've seen in years.

Sounds like some people I've known over the years. Don't think the petroleum jelly would work on them though. lol

The area on the east side of Kalamalka Lake along the power line is an ecological zone so is left in it's natural state, has a lot of thick brush, and is a wintering place for deer, just the right situation to promote large unchecked tick populations. A few years ago, just outside of that zone while bow hunting, I shot a deer that looked like a mangy dog from all the scratching and rubbing because it was just crawling all over with ticks.

Same in Rock Creek. The Mule deer have lots of them. Never found any on the Whitetails.

I use K9 Advantix on 2 of my three dogs and it seems to work quite well. That said this has been an unreal spring for ticks. I pull 10-20 off me during my daily hikes and have had to pull a couple off the hairy dog after they swole up and became noticeable and that's with the K9 Advantix. The pitty just doesn't seem to get them very often for some reason though I did find one hanging from her privates last year, the removal of which was not a lot of fun for either of us:)

Man! from the look in that hairy dog's eyes, I can see that it would be quite a tussle to do anything intimate with it if it thought it was a game.

A couple of shots of the stinking bugs. This is 2 of the 12 I took off myself this morning, 5 off the pitbull during the walk also. That's the tip of a ballpoint pen for scale.

I've had good luck with K9 Advantix. Recent hike to a southern exposure, rock bluff area, me 4 ticks, my Lab 0. It's a monthly, topical application on your dogs back.

I recommend Presidents Choice Pet Insurance to everyone who does not already have coverage. Lowest price out there, and coverage is great. Needed it twice, my cat swallowed a bracelet, removed via a small slice in her tummy. Nearly 900 dollars was covered. Then she did it again 3 months later. The smell of her throw up was unbelievable. 3 days later resting at home good as new. Hope I wont be needing it again, but i have it for all three of my pets.

Our dog had a couple ticks early this spring. One morning about a month ago he could hardly walk and seemed to be limping. It was bad enough we would help him stand up..... We took him in to the vet and they started traeting him for Lyme disease right away. It took about 5 days and the symptoms got better day by day. Scary stuff
The tests came back negative but I've heard that the tests for Lyme disease are fickle anyway..
