some west kootenay elk still packing....

son in law had three elk in the back field two days ago & the biggest, a big 5x5, still had his headgear. the two smaller bulls with him had dropped already & had new stubs growing. talked to another fellow today near the US border who has been watching a small herd for several weeks & all three bulls in that group are still packing headgear - one a tall spiker, one 3x3 & a 4x4. I thought all the bulls would have dropped by now & was considering a shed hunt this weekend but I think I'll go look for a turkey instead!

Nope. Region 4 elk don't lose their antlers until just about now. The new growth can even start without the old ones coming off. Ive seen elk with antlers into May. Saw two mulie bucks the other day, both with antlers.

A 4x4 from the Squamish Valley herd was still packing as of last weekend. We are starting to do some bear and shed hunting simultaneously.

I've seen 5pt bulls still packin in May.
