Average sized adult full grown male Shirus moose. If four quarters were taken to a butcher how many lbs of cut and wrapped meat would you expect to get. Steaks burger. ?

You have actually weighed a Shiras bull's testicles?

The front quarters have the ribs attached and the back are meaty I'd say average bone in the fronts 110 the backs 90 pounds
Bone in total would be about four hundred with the bone in for an adult Shiras bull moose.
That's quarters with bone in and the hide off.
After butchered and trimmed then wrapped you will lose weight because of trim taken off and cleaned up.
Taking it home your looking at 300 maximum with burger and roasts and steaks.

Shiras are living down by Cranbrook area Region 4. By the Quinn Creek area. They are dark colored almost black.
Smaller than a Canadian moose the same age.

Mean body weights of adult cow moose captured in the 3 areas of the East Kootenay (Flathead, Upper Elk, and Spillimacheen valleys) as estimated by regression from body measurements (Hundertmark and Schwartz 1998) did not differ among areas (F= 1.39, 35 df, P= 0.26), and averaged 439 kg (K. Poole, unpublished data), greater than the supposed maximum body weight for bull Shiras moose (370 kg; Bubenik 1998).)

No doubt there is a change in antler growth and size due to habitat, but you need a bit more science than that to identify a sub-species.

Feel free to talk about beliefs, more than enough of that going on nowadays........ in North Korea.

I always thought the "BC Shiras Moose" thing was proposed by outfitters to sell "Shiras" moose hunts to Americans so they could get a big Shiras for ther B&C record book?

Gotta give it to B&C - it does not aknlowdge them as Shiras, it is only SCI that does and yes the push was from outfitters to inflate the value of hunts.

Well it all depends how much trimming has to be done. Waste due to blood shot will add up. You will be close to 50 % for sure. I have been a butcher for 20 years and I have seen the good the bad the ugly and OMG are you for really...

My last Shiras Bull weighed in at 475 hanging with the backstrap and ribs boned out. All told just over 300 lbs of meat cut and wrapped. great burger, liked the Elk better for steaks and roasts.

I agree with Mike 458, it all depends on the condition it is brought to the butcher; like how dirty it is and how badly shot up it is (not only the bullet hole(s), but the extent of the blood shock created from the bullet). Whether the animal is boned out or cut with bone in will also determine how much the finished product will weigh, as well as how long the carcass is aged. A couple of tips for hunters is to remove the shot up portions of the carcass before you take it to the butcher...follow the blood shock and remove all the raspberry jelly from between the muscle areas near where the shot placement including shoulder blades and hips. You should also be extremely picky about cleaning the hair & othe debris missed in the initial cleaning, since you will either be eating your meat with bits of hair etc. in it or will pay extra cleaning costs over and above the rest of the processing costs. The care you take with your game is the biggest determination with how great the cuts of meat taste!

So for perhaps the first time in HBC history, one could say they taste kinda "shirus-ish"......................
