He is OK but not good. It looks like his years have finally caught up to him. Thanks tho.
Right now the sky is about half clear and I can see stars but the forecast is for rain.
I will get up super early to check, but if it is raining I will just go back to bed and do some evening hunts this week.
Maybe even get out your way bcbrez next Sunday/Monday.

well another opener has come and gone, was a fantastic day,
we sat at our first set up for 5 hrs, i think I had 7 layers on so the cold never got through, nothing not a sound at all, and just days before there were birds, guess they have better things to do,
off to my plan b, set up and as soon as I let the first call out I had multiple hens replying, I know this group has a Tom with them because I saw him yesterday, he's a beauty, but he didn't say a thing, I squeaked back n forth with the hens for a good 5 mins then they started coming closer and closer. just before I could see them they decided to change directions....... frustrating, why?
i called a bit more as they replied in the fading distance.
back at it ASAP!!

out the door at 330 today, couldn't sleep so what better to do, hiked to a spot today I thought had birds, sat an hr , nothin, decided to work my way back to the truck, had to be in kelowna by 8 for work...... it's now 6:20 and I hear 2 gobblers just lit right up . im on a real steep slope up hill of them,so they sounded much closer then they were, turns out I was at least a couple roads above them. I ran down to try to gain on them cause they were moving away from me. there was a time where I was gaining on them, I just wanted to get close enough!, slammed up against a tree and started a little calling, they responded well, but still were headed elsewhere and I couldn't see them and the trees were getting thick and work was on my mind, so hoping they will be in the neighbourhood next time, I pulled out with great reluctance,
made it to work 15 mins late........ back at it asap :)

I lived a hunters worse nightmare this morning....
i let the team down and my self down....:(
extremely humbling experience.....

set up close to the roost again, no problem locating him, gobbling all on his won, when I saw him fly down, he pushed off so hard the huge branch below him broke and was very loud, I'm sure this spooked him cause he flew along way away ....
I spent the next 2 hrs trying to catch up with him, and finally did with great sweaty effort.
everything was working , calls, responds, he was excited but I was in the bush and he was in the open, he finally hung up and wouldn't come closer, now I've practiced this long shot enough with my 2oz loads.
and I know I was in range , I took the shot as he began to leave towards the big open country, fully expecting him to flop I quickly realized I forgot to select my top barrel which has full choke, and I shot bottom barrel which was cylinder .....!!!!! :'( and watched him gracefully fly away with ease.

so here's my question what r the chances, he will roost same area again and do his routine because its been 4 days in a row I've seen him there, or have I completely lost all chances with him in that location,

would love your feedback.

cheers

Brez
04-17-2013, 09:04 AM
I think it depends if he's hit or not. I know of a lot that have flown away but sure that they've been hit. If he hasn't been injured, I think there is a good chance that he'll return.

boscheefish
04-17-2013, 09:59 AM
yeah too far for cylinder I'm pretty sure he's not hit, I looked a long time in the direction I saw him go . I went at least a 1 km after him he was airborne for a long time tho watched him fly the whole distance of the field than turn down hill again...
I feel terrible,
im going to check on him tomorrow and see what I can hear,

Brez
04-17-2013, 12:01 PM
Sounds like if you give him a day or two, he'll be back. Good luck.

eastkoot
04-17-2013, 12:15 PM
May depend on how many hens he had. They are horny buggers. He may look for greener "safe" pastures but he will be back if hens were there.

boscheefish
04-17-2013, 12:19 PM
well he's been this way daily so that's what I'm counting on :)

Wingman
04-17-2013, 04:38 PM
Been there done that... solved the problem by buying an auto with the full choke it takes the mistake out of the game. As far as coming back he might but will most likely use his second roost a least that seem how the Toms act around here. They have two locations about 1 1/2 K apart. The tough part will be getting him to come to your calls now that he has been educated.

boscheefish
04-18-2013, 12:21 PM
ok I'm very happy to say he's still alive and well, I snuck back into his roost at 430 this morn, I just wanted to see If he was still around, I sat until 6, I could hear another gobbler in the distance so I decided to make a run for him, as I gathered my stuff the Tom flew out of his roost , he was silent all morning and was in the exact same tree!!!
as I was running to the other gobbler, I ran into the one I just flushed from his roost and he was airborn again! didn't mean to spook him he just landed right where I was walking by, hes gonna be tough to get now.....
so on to his other bird, unfortunately when I was trying to be sneaky and set the decoy up I think he saw movement, he was faraway and I tried to coax him in, he hung around for 45 mins chatting with my calls but wouldn't commit, eventually he left ,
so the plan is try for this one tomorrow , I think I found his little private strutting spot, will set up and just wait to see if be comes on his own,
what a season , scout fri sat sun, hunt mon tues wed thurs morn and work a full day,
I'm wearin out haha, this is truly an amazing time of yr,

boscheefish
04-19-2013, 09:34 AM
well today I didn't know what to expect as I have never been out when its raining, I've just been that lucky :)
so it wasn't raining too bad, but there was a heavy fog set in, I was set up for just over 3 hrs and didn't hear a sound, hardly anything for that matter, even the crows were scarce, now I've seen a lot of shows hunting birds in the rain so I won't let this get me down, I had to be back for work so I had to leave , as I was leaving the fog lifted and the sun poked out, I'm sure if I had more time things may have improved,

anybodg else have stories of chasing gobblers in the rain,

Last year, it rained hard the second day and I told my buddies from the lml not to expect much, so we went for a drive. Met a couple of my hunting buddies coming out of a road and they hadn't or heard anything but other hunters. Just about turned back but said "What the heck" and continued on to the end of the road. Walked 5 minutes and just about stepped on a tom and 2 hens. Shot him at 10 yds. Driving out, windows down because our wet clothes were fogging the windows, we heard a gobble, stopped and called back and THREE toms walked up and out on the road. Took their pictures. Ate my words that day.

i am starting to get a little discouraged, the last 5 trips have had no success, not a sound,
i believe somebody got them already or they have been pushed outta the area,

so I am thinking about Headn east :) anybody on team 4 live in turkey country? haven't hunted them past grandforks so if you guys have any better ideas I'm going in blind Sunday,

got some audio of a wolf this morning in the dark probably a few hundred yards away, creepy sound when u are all alone

i got out a little late , and feeling bad about that, I arrived at 520 and it was bright, I opened my truck door and didn't even get out before I heard gobbles,
so in a panic I gathered what I could, I snuck close, but was approaching a clearing which I didn't want to enter, my only spot to set up was on the fsr because of the birds position,
1/2 hr of gobbles on the roost and finally he flew Down very gracefully. I lost sight of him but could hear the thunderous gobble and his wings, he put a show on for a good 40 mins, at that moment I decided to change my calling a bit and he started my way.
he rounded a bend and I lost sight but knew he was coming I could hear him now closer n closer, the first thing I saw was his fan followed by a beard and that was it! I didn't wait one more second .
what a treat to experience this truly wild adventure again.

two things to mention,

for those of u who haven't got a bird yet, I spent 18 days preseason and inseason combined, hope that can motivate some ppl and you guys who live in turkey country, and gettn your bird opening morning, I'm well jealous!!! :)

on another note I was talking to a team mate lastnight about jakes, ive personally never seen one, and he said u will know them by their hi pitched gobble,
we'll today I was out with a buddy who's searching for his long beard, and guess what we called in our first jake, I had a very hard time not laughing especially because of lastnight a conversation about them ,his funny gobble sounded kinda "cute" for lack of better words....
as we were working this bird, a Tom let out some thunderous distanct gobbles, the jake never made a sound after we heard that Tom, we grabbed our stuff and ran cause he was far, down a valley, crossed a creek up the other side, only to get busted in the end!! it was an exciting chase regardless, because of the terrain there was no way to call this one to us and I didn't know he terrain on this side, so there was no ambush, they should still be there next wknd , :)
