Over the last few months I have been looking at purchasing a 4x4 Japanese mini truck or a UTV for hunting purposes. For the most part I have been leaning towards the mini truck as I like the idea of having a heated cab and it would be useful around the house. Recently though I looked at a 2013 Polaris RZR and its width was only 50 inches. I have not done any trail riding in the past but hear it is lots of fun and would like to get into it. So I am wondering for those of you with experience or knowledge on the matter, how wide are typical ATV trails in BC? I would primarily be using it on the Island but would probably bring it over to the mainland every year or two for a hunting trip.

50 inch rzr fits perfectly on quad trails thats why it was made that width, and it fits between wheel wells in a truck box. Also You can get a cab enclosure and a heater for them.

A RZR will fit on most that I have been on, I see a lot of them rolling through trails. Also a little chevy tracker or suziki sidekick works on most of them as well if you still want heat. But if you get into some of the trickier atv trails, you wont make it in the truck or the tracker some are just to steep. Just something to think about.

Thanks KB90 and Moe, I appreciate the serious answers. So are tight ATV trails 50 inches wide then? Or can the 54.4 inch Yamaha Rhino's also fit down the tighter trails?

You can't measure a a trail width, it depends on who cut it to fit what through. You go between large trees that is how wide they are. I am sure the side by side would be a lot of fun and most of the time just fine to great, but trails can be off camber and the roll cage/bars on side by sides can be in the way . A atv you stand up or lean for side hills that is not possible in a side by side, so if most everything you plan on being on is old roads and some decent trails you will be fine

ATV trail standards in various states are 50" to prevent small vehicles like Sidekicks and Samurais from using them. I think a lot of ATV clubs use the same guideline for the same reason. Another thing to consider is height -- trails are only cleared to around 4' which is enough for a quad but too low for a UTV. I see lots of old FS roads (in the Cariboo) where pine deadfall is opened to 50" to let the ATVs though and keep the trucks out.

I think you would have ground clearance issues more than anything, those mini trucks don't usually have a ton of lift to them.

Average height is also 47.43 inches.

Don't go without a saw, and expect to do some/alot'o buckin'.

Exactly *what* is an ATV trail?
I've never seen one nor a sign for one.

My buddy went everywhere atv's went with his ranger 900xp last fall. He had to wiggle in a few spots, and definitely rubbed the sides of the machine a lot, but never had to buck any spots wider! Moosin

First of all ask your self where your going to get the most use out of it. Logging roads deactivated roads skidder trails. What will you mainly use it for. Once you have these answers then you will have a more educated guess. Me myself and I will be going with a UTV or a decent Tracker.

trail width can vary, cattle guards and bridges would be wide enough for ATV's only.

Bridges?I don`t use no stinkin` bridges.Pound right through the fish habitat.I also groom my trails wide enough to pass at 60 miles an hour and high enough to stand up and wave my cowboy hat.And yell YEEHAW!!
