My first gundog was an English Setter I got in 1973. Since then I've kind of come full circle with Springers, Chessies, etc. and decided to train up another Setter and picked up JD last spring from a breeder in Wisconsin. He turned a year old in February. So far he's coming along nicely. He's extremely birdy and is full of point, but still has a lot of puppy in him of course. He's a very easy going dog and is very calm and mannerly in the house. In the field he's starting to range out about where I would like him to be....200 to 300 yards in the open most of the time...sometimes a bit further, sometimes a bit closer but he stays in contact with me. I think he's going to be a good one if I don't screw him up..

Here's JD at about 7 months old...

Ha!!! I probably should....the tip of his tail gets bloody when we're in the brush. I had a Gordon many years ago. She was pretty mediocre to be honest.

He is a nice looking dog, but I like what's between his ears moreso than the looks... He's very balanced.... He's extremely birdy, but very level headed at the same time. When I started Checking with different breeders I was wanting a dog that looked like my first Setter, which was a black/tan/white tricolor. I found a few but kept being drawn back to the litter JD came from...... I just liked what I was hearing from the breeder, what I saw in the parents, etc. and finally decided looking for a pup based on color was foolish... Like they say " A good horse can't be a bad color"....same theory applies to dogs. JD has really darkened down from when I picked him up at 8 weeks.... His AKC hame is "Stonebroke's Jim Dandy"...."JD" for short.. The only problem is that my wife's name is Judy and when I'm outside and call JD she thinks I'm calling her... and she yells back "What do you Want?"... JD is almost as well trained as she is!!! ;)

Get what you mean, the dog's temperament and training are more important than looks! Our lab would never win a conformation contest, but he sure is cool!!!

Deffinately it's whats between the ears and in the nose that counts. My dog would be banished from a bench show in disgrace, but then again I never have seen a game bird at a bench show. Springers change colour from puppy to adult but wow, I had to scroll back and forth and look at the body spots a number of times before I could believe the puppy and yearling pix were of the same dog. Thanks for posting.
