Yesterday I was having a wonderful day getting a mani/pedi while a party was being set up at my house. A surprise 29th birthday for the 20th time (my birthday).
It was a day of surprises for me. Peter started making a speech about a fishing trip we went on 20 years ago (for my birthday). We took a trip to the Stamp River in Port Alberni with a fishing guide. I caught my first and only steelhead that weekend. A beautiful fresh from the ocean to river steelhead. We knew it was a perfect specimen because it still had sea lice on its body and it was beautifully chrome. Best fight I have ever experienced other than sturgeon. This fish weighed in at 20 lbs. 5 lbs more than the one Peter caught. Our guide and Peter and I were extremely excited that i not only hooked and fought this beast on my own but I got it into the boat and it was a keeper. We still had another day to fish so we put my fish on ice in the guides cooler. The next day when we were getting ready to leave, we went to get our fish. My trophy was gone and the explanation given was our guide's sister took it home and bbq it by mistake. My name was on the fish so how did she not notice. Anger, frustration, sadness and disappointment set in, thank goodness for photos to show I actually caught the fish and it was not a fish tale.
Fast forward to yesterday.... Peter had commissioned Gander's Taxidermy to make a replica of my trophy steelhead. During his speech, Rob Gander (very dear friend and my son's Godfather) presented me with this amazing beautiful wall hanger Steelhead. My steelhead, my 20 year old lost fish. I was in shock and total awe. I now have this, my first game trophy hanging on my wall. And in full Peter style (he got the date wrong) which is another story in itself. Peter's memory said we went in October 1996 but it was really March 1993.
People always say how lucky Peter is all the time but I think I am really the lucky one.
