Going to take my custom LH Rem 700 35 Whelen loaded with 200 gr Accubonds @ 2830 fps, probably going to get some sausage made and a bit of ground meat. I am going to take my wife out with me so she can see what it is like to shoot an animal and dress it out. Also taking out a young guy and he is going to use my Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 1 303 British with 180 gr Speer RN's @ 2350 fps. Spot and stalk for us but will not turn down a bear while road hunting :)

Do they work with wild game? I usually get casing and the like from them.

I'll be using my 7mm RM with 175gr Partitions....or maybe try out the 175gr GameKings.

338, spot and stalk + road gimmes. smokies. gonna be very selective on blacks this spring as grizz will be my true target. besides the meat I generally just keep the skull and claws on the little guys and give away the rug on the bigger guys. If i get a monster I may get a shoulder mount. already have a nice cinnamon bear rug.

When we get home we package the meat in 20lb ziplocks, this is about one batch for them, take it in and get the smokies done up, we do this over the course of the year as sausage etc loses something when frozen. They do not take the whole animal, just meat ready for processing or a ham ready to be brined and smoked.

Spot and stalk with my M70 Extreme Weather in 325wsm with 200gr tsx moving @ 2950fps. I have been thinking about taking something with my 30-30 so maybe I will use that not sure. Last year I mad the whole bear into peperoni and I will get most of it made into it again but after reading this thread I will try getting some smokies made as well. I'm still kicking myself for not keeping the hide on the bear I got last year as it was a decent size so will be looking for one with a nice coat.

hmmm I also hope to get out, a few times at least... Spot and stock is the most enjoyable, however I have ran into the odd bear just driving out to the area I intend to hunt. By using the truck, ATV or walking I try and get some elevation to look down over several cut blocks, natural openings and greened up areas..

I also am planning on returning to the bear guiding the spring for a very special event, if all works out after it's over I'm sure there will be a report of the activities and success.

I've decided to give bear meat a try so this will be my first time out actually looking for a bear. I plan on doing a lot of still hunting/spot and stalk with some predator calling thrown in to see how that works. Hiking will be my main method of locomotion and I may be heading out for an extended weekend backpack hunt with a buddy if the snow is gone in the higher elevations early enough. I would love to get my first bear up in the high country on a weekend backpack hunt. Looking into doing a home tanning job on the hide(squared off no legs or head), bleach the skull for the garden, hams, roasts, and burger out of the meat. Bolt action 270win, Tikka t3 s/s.

First time out this year. Trying to arrange a hunt with a much more experienced guy so the technique will be up to him. I will be using a 30-30 so the range will be limited - my guess is spot (but not from the vehicle) and stalk. I like getting out in the woods and walking. I would like to have the meat processed for roasts or stewing.

Our Airedales love bear meat, it's like crack to them. They get all crazy when your boiling a scull out back. Ya, boiled is best, softens the meat up, pulls nice too.

I've been using the 250gr Accubond in the 9.3 ( which is excellent) but have never field tested the 286gr Hornaday, I start them off at a little over 2500fps. No the dogs do not come hunting.

Is that like "giant shrimp". For 30-06 180's have always been my go-to weight. 165 is the compromise weight for most big game. 168's are usually a match bullet not designed for hunting. I like 200's in magnum type cartridges but at 30-06 velocities it's a bit of a lob.

200 gr isnt an overkill nor is it a "lob" shot from a 30-06 if u are doing it right u should be under 100 yds anyways so basically any bullet out of a 30-06 i personally shoot 165gr hornady sst and have shot all my game for the last 2 years with this bullet. I have heard someone say they shot a bear with there 243 at 20 yds in the fall and it didnt even move from where it was standing when he shot, im not gonna risk it with a calibre that small personally but i say i would use anything down to around a 270

Already been out 5 day trips - mostly scouting. Seen one real big boar but not since. Not seeing much sign yet but spring is definitely here (2-11). Seen a fair bit of other wildlife while scouting: 12+ goats, 1 bull moose, 10+ deer, 1 big black boar, and 1 house cat (4km down logging road...). There was also a golden eagle that was keeping a close eye on the kid goats.

Shot my first last year and waiting on a friend to come up so he can get one.

270 w 140 accubond and spot and stalk with truck/atv used for the spot and legs for the stalk.

Sausages and a rug.

Yeah it has been that way for me, but with my second job and people quiting so I have to fill in. this weekend no excuse and my friends just got two turkeys they are gloating about so I got to get something to counterbalance or I wont hear the end of it till deer season opens.

When we get home we package the meat in 20lb ziplocks, this is about one batch for them, take it in and get the smokies done up, we do this over the course of the year as sausage etc loses something when frozen. They do not take the whole animal, just meat ready for processing or a ham ready to be brined and smoked.

Just curious if you hang the meat first or if you just cut it up and freeze it.

I'm picking up my new atv on Saturday, so I'm hoping to get out and take it for a spin. I'll bring my 7mm with accubond 160gr in case I see a big bore. I'll get it made into salami and smokies

Drove a bunch of chilliwack valleys many logging roads and didn't see a single road poop

Did see 11 deer one buck with fuzzy buttons

just a reminder to practice your shooting. We spent the morning shooting and couldn't believe how rusty I was but after a few clips I'm back on point.

Hunting local again this year = work is so busy no way for me to take time off other than a few hours here and there.

I usually use different cartridge/rifle combo's during the season first few trips I'm planning on taking and if I see a big enough bear breaking in my shortened to 22" barreled T/C Prohunter in 375H&H loaded with 250gr TTSX @ 2600fps.

I was surprised to read how many of you guys are stating they are taking their 30-06 rifles seemed to me that the 30-06 is the most popular cartridge so far in this thread.

What to you think of stewing in a slow cooker?

Slow cooker is excellent for all that (thats what i mostly use)..in stews, give more time for meat...add veggies bit later.

How many hours would you do the meat before adding the veg's? 4,5 or more hours. In a slow cooker that is. I haven't eaten bear meat in decades. Literally.

Never mind, I just read a few posts I missed and the answer was there.

Hi,

I'm going black bear hunting in a month and I'm going to be using my Husky 8x57. I have Sierra 200 gr Pro-Hunter and Speer 175 gr Hot Cor soft point bullets to reload using PPU brass.

I've only shot the 198 gr FMJ Prvi in this rifle and it was dead on using the factory irons, and I was hitting the gong at 200 meters if I did my part. I want to mimic this FMJ performance using a soft point hunting bullet.

Firstly, if I used the Sierra 200 gr bullets, anybody know what kind of powder would give similar performance to the 200 gr Prvi ammo?

This is Prvi's data: 8 mm Mauser FMJ BT 198gr;665m/s; 2840J; 610mm barrel length tested

Secondly, will 200 gr SP penetrate and expand enough to kill a black bear without it running off? I suppose I'm asking, will it transfer enough kinetic energy while breaking bone and tissue to basically drop it?

The other option I have is a 150 gr 30-30 Marlin but I don't want to risk being underpowered. I have some 170 gr Rem Cor-Lokts as well, but my rifle is sighted in using the 150gr, do you think POA and POI will vary significantly as 100 yards?

Thanks!

P.S. How long are the usual engagements with black bears?

Dude, ive dropped 4 bears with my .243. They werent monsters, but none of them went more than 10 yards. I was using Hornady 100gr BT factory ammo, and 1 with a 95gr SST factory. Unless you are taking really long shots at bears, you dont need a huge gun, just an accurate one.

To give the wife a break for mothers day I took my 6 year old son up the Skagit this morning didn't see any bears mind you we didn't start heading in until appr 10am.

He had fun shooting his T/C Contender carbine I put my 18" 10mm barrel on it and loaded it with close to top loaded 180gr Montana Gold's first time he has tried anything with this kind of recoil all he has shot is his 22LR barrel and a 410 barrel = it rocked him back pretty good but he kept shooting it.

He's not strong enough to open the action or cock the hammer yet so I have get everything ready for him.

Was a good morning...

Never been bear hunting...Think it's the responsible thing to do though, predators need to be culled - and it sounds like the meat is good. Where do you guys get the peperoni etc made? Or do you do it yourself?? A rug eh, I like it.
