I was up the Squamish yesterday for a ski trip into the Elaho. We saw a bunch of elk including some still carrying antlers. I thought it a bit late for that. When do they drop?
Also saw some tracks in the Elaho (a single animal) that were either size large elk or a moose. The fact that this one was wandering around solo made me wonder if it was a moose rather than an elk. Any moose up there?
Other assorted tracks spotted, including - beaver (crossing between waterways), large cat (cougar I guess) and wolf. Great day to be outside.

Here on Van Isle, end April/early May. Thats just based of what I've seen while bear hunting.

Yesterday (mar.17) was the earliest I have ever found a fresh drop. Mid April and later is your best bet. I saw a few bulls still packing steelhead fishing the other day.

Thanks for the info. I assumed, obviously incorrectly, that they were like moose and deer and would have dropped by now.

1st 10 days of april around gold river...

About the lone tracks - we often see single elk bulls heading uphill/back into the valleys while plowing snow in the spring - and I'm talking on top of up to 10 feet of snow at times...

I saw two bucks in a group of three mulies still packing yesterday (mar 17th) here in the south Cariboo. What is it that causes them to drop? I've heard it has something to do with the length of daylight affecting hormone production?

OK it was probably a big bull elk then. He had obviously been spending some time in the area judging by the amount of sh#t around. I didn't really expect moose in that area, but I did talk to some FN guys who were fishing the Squamish and they said there have been some moose sightings in the Elaho recently. Maybe they are moving in.

There use to be a sign just after crossing the squish mainsteam stateing to hunters that there was a protected moose population living in the elaho valley
