Oregon and Montana with topo and Birdseye sat imagery. Montana is a little big and the Oregon is a bit tough to see on sunny days

A $35 second hand plan jane basic black and yellow eTrex about ten years old or more now, batteries (2AA) last six months at a time, or longer.
Don't have map technology or color, but really don't need it, works very well, and always gets me back to the road everytime.

Garmin Dakota 10 mostly used for marking traps for the days my memory is not good enough

If I find a hunting spot a good hike away from the road I will mark it to see if I can find a better way in for next time

Garmin Rino 530. Works great in heavy cover and also has the radio so it cuts down on my pack weight.

Garmin GPSmap 76CSx. I have a bunch of topos loaded on it that covers the lower half of BC. It's a back up to real maps most of the time.

I don't really rely on my iphone that much, battery life is too short with the GPS Apps running.

Started with a Garmin Nuvi 55o and loaded it with the BC Backroads maps as I always carry the mapbooks in the truck as well. It is waterproof, dust proof and works well in or out of the vehicle. I now also have a Garmin 62s with the Canada Topo maps installed. Use them both for hunting, fishing, geocaching, and traveling including a couple of trips to Hawaii. They are way more than I need but eventually I will become proficient enough to use their full potential. If you strictly want one for the bush I would go with the 62s as it is very rugged and works well.

I use the oregon with custom maps built from google earth. They are high quality air photos with contours and roads overlaid. It's labor-intensive and you can store an area that is about 40,000 acres (sounds like a lot but isn't that much). You can get a far larger area but the image quality suffers.
Great way to go if you have a handful of areas that you hunt intensively.

Powell,

Do your self a favour and pick the garmin oregon 450 for half price in the Cabelas sale, link below, I picked one up last season and they are awesome. easy to use, intuitive, good accuracy and battery life is ok.

You can get the Garmin 450T in Canada for $249 so why buy out of the states and pay more by the time you add freight and dollar difference.

iphone Navionics app for US and Canada. Shows everything. Topo maps with elevations and main logging roads. Has a satellite maps as well so you can see the spurs too. Plus you can use it on the water with depth contours (good for lakes and the chuck). Has the same capabilities as my Lowrance GPS/plotter on my boat. Pair it up with the Hunting Buddy app and you are good to go. Hunting buddy has maps and shows MUs and current regs for the area you are in. Navionics costs about $15 and Hunting Buddy i think was around $4. Best money I ever spent. Just in case anybody is wondering, yes the iphone gps works in the bush without cell service because it uses the phone's GPS system unrelated to the cellular system

Thanks fellas. As always great info. I have a Garmin with Birdseye loaded in but as the case seems to always be google earth and Birdseye are a fuzzy mess for the fly in I have planned for this year. I also have the motion x app for my iPhone which has amazing maps but like others have said battery life is crap. Also a bit fragile for the bush. Anyone try using solar chargers?

you can buy back up battery packs for Iphones that you can just toss in your pocket or pack and with an Otter Box Defender cover the phone is virtually indestructable. Plus an Iphone has a camera and video camera something that a hand held GPS doesnt have. Man, im starting to sound like an Iphone salesman, lol

i have an etrex that i used everyday from when i used to work forestry. It works awesome, and as long as you know how to plot yourself on a map, you should never get lost. its not color or anything fancy but it stores waypoints, works good in heavy cover, and is rugged as hell. Its been rained on, stepped on, dropped, dragged(drug? pick one).
