I am looking at the Garmin Oregon 450t with preloaded Canadian Topo.
It is on sale for $249 , but I can get just the 450 w/o the topo for $199.

My question is; is the topo worth it?? or just go with the 450.

Cheers

I dont have the topo, but i do have the oregon. And it is awesome gps. I have it loaded with BC backroads map books. I know this doesnt answer your question, lol but the oregon is a wicked unit.

I use the 450t and wherever I go the maps are there. My buddy has the 450 without the maps and has to buy an SD card with a map for each region we go in . For me ,it was worth the extra bucks for the convenience .

It's awesome but it sure eats up batteries.

I have both map sets and prefer the Backroads quite a bit more.

I have an Oregon 450..Found it used batteries also.A friend suggested rechargebles and higher mAh ..Went to The Source and bought InfiniCell rechargeable batteries.Oregon recommends high mAh batteries...Example:....Duracell rechargeables--2000 mAh...Energizer rechargeables.---2450 mAh...InfiniCell---2500 mAh... The higher the mAh ..the longer the charge it holds...Hope this helps.. The InfiniCell can be recharged 100's of times...

$50 for a topo set up is cheap. Usually way more than that.

I use two Garmins, a GPSMap 76C and a 60CSX. Both are loaded with TOPO Canada. The 76C only has 115MB internal memory so it will not hold the whole province. The 60CSX uses a micro SD and I have it loaded all the way out into Saskatchewan. TOPO Canada is based on the government maps so location is quite accurate although more recent roads may not appear, especially FSRs.

I have the oregon 400T with the topo and birdseyes sat imagery and it works great, the birdseye slows the gps down when panning but is worth it! Only complaint is that the screan is hard to see on sunny days

Sitkaspruce,

Can you tell me where you found the Oregon model on sale? Thanks.

I have the 450t with a back roads map book micro sd card in it too, the maps overlay on one another. IMO it can't be beat for hunting and fishing purposes.

GPS central in Calgary has it on sale right now.

Yup, but with the advertising rules on here, I did not want to "promote" it......

The other GPS place has the 450 on for $199.....

The generic topo on the T model are not suuficient for the area you hunt regularly in. Back Roads are much better. however, if you plan to travel for the extra $50 the maps give you a great head start for the dollar.

Only thing the back roads maps couldn't do that I was hoping they would is the 3d view. Only works with the garmin sourced maps. Other than that back roads maps are great and I don't wish I had gotten the 450t instead

Have had trouble getting a signal in tree cover though. Don't forget your flagging tape

Doesnt one map overlay the other?

I bought the 450t, have been building some GE/Bing maps, downloaded GPSBuddy, have Patchmap from work to use and if needed will buy Bushmap this summer. The BRBC map is great as well, but since I work and live in the NE, the BR maps are not really needed.

Looking forward to doing some Geocaching this summer, scouting out some hunting spots and generally using the GPS for what it is designed for.

Thanks for all the input folks.

Cheers

Get the topo, it's cheap at $50, and is very useable. If you want Backroads later, you can buy the sd card for $150.

the Backroads topo maps on sd card are great with the Oregon 450. I couldn't believe that Costco was selling them for $199 I paid $ 399 for mine 3 years ago through the GPS store . I have had no signal problems under a heavy canopy and my battery life got very reasonable once i dimmed the display. This is a very good unit , the only reason that I can think that they are so cheap at Costco is that there must be some new technology coming down the pipe

I got a Garmin 450 from Costco last week. and I downloaded for free Ibycus Topo Maps, installed in 20 minutes, and by comparing with
other Garmin 550t, Ibycus maps are better, and free, if you like them you can donate some money to the guy who build them, I think he is from Calgary.
