Hello all fellow shedheads and antler fanatics! Couple years ago I took all my sheds out for a pic. Something I wanted to do for a long time. Now lets see your collections too! Yup, I'm sick...it's a disease!

So, What can you do with sheds once you've got some. Just build up a stockpile or can you sell them? Are they worth any money?

that's an impressive pile.
and some thumpin' mulies in there.

Thanks for you replies guys. I would like to make things from them to sell rather than sell them by the pound. Ive been in contact with a few buyers in the past. I'm keeping my bigger ones especially the mule deer which are harder to come by.

Great looking collection. I have looked for sheds almost every spring for over 25 years. I have found hundreds over the years and have either sold them or gave them away. I took a month of holidays off work a few years back and looked for sheds almost every day. I focused on moose and did well, that was my best season cashing a cheque for just over 10k.
Since I have sold most of them the pictures are just random from different years. I have a month booked for this spring so I hope to have a good season this year as well.

I've been looking for sheds since I was 12. Me and my dad would just go hiking and pick them up for something to do. We gave most of them away back then. I cringe because that was in the late 80's early 90's and we probably had some dandy sheds. Most of my bigger mule deer sheds are from the 90's and the elk from the last 10 years.

I make knives as a semi serious hobby , considering that giraffe bones are $35 to $50 bucks a piece and leather isnt cheap either , I imagine those'd be worth a fair ammount to say the least .
I've seen translucent sheep horn go for as high as $200 each , I imagine those dark antlers would fetch $35 to $50 apiece to the right seller .
I prefer hardwood for my knife handles and I have a couple sheds myself , otherwise I'd offer you a few bucks for one myself .

Wayne,
Those southern mountain caribou sheds were off a bull that was killed by a big grizzly. We found the kill scene on the way to work one Nov morning. Several hundred metres of blood, hair and tracks of the battle in the snow. One shed was on the top of the carcus and the other was about 40 metres up the road from the carcus. The grizz heard us coming and mossied around the corner as we approached. We documented the kill scene with pics and GPS and started up the road hoping to do some forestry layout. Turned out the bear walked up the road till he hit the timber we were going to be working in where he left the road and entered our block. Needless to say, we didn't work that day. We instead went home and reported our encounter with the Ministry. I would think the stress of the battle is what caused the bull to drop his antlers.

I'd love to see the elk ATL's. Elk are one critter I don't get to shed hunt very much.

Dana, what a crazy story and what a find! Looks like that caribou was a stud. Congrats on the match.

What was sad is it took going to the media before the Ministry was willing to go out and see it for themselves. A big dump of new snow and all traces of the attack scene were covered. The bear was long gone and there was a wolf track there so they thought it was inclusive that it was a grizzly kill. Later that winter, the local heliskiing company hovered over a grizz on another caribou. IMO, probably the same bear. We've been sounding the predator warning bells for years, but back then, it was better to live capture the wolves and put collars on them so we can study them some more. The units do have some limited grizzly draws but the season goes from April 1 to May 31st. Most of the drainages are still plugged full of snow when the season ends. Very few bears get harvested. I noticed this year they finally bumped up the number of allocations but a little too late if you ask me. The moose counts are have gone from 400 a few short years ago to 38 now. Instead of the wolves leaving now the moose are down, they are instead focusing on the remaining caribou. But goatguy says a cull is coming to save the almost extinct herd. Yea, I'm sure the Liberals are going to win with a landslide and the pie in the sky is going to happen. :) :) Maybe now you might understand why I am a little on the jaded side when it comes to predator management.

I remember years back I found a shed out muley buck skeleton and both his antlers were laying there as well. It was old, moss covered and chewed up. Never took any pics.

Dana, you ever come across any shed out buck skulls? I remember a lot of years ago It was quite common to find them and I have quite a few as I saved them to mount sheds on.

I used to find the quite often years ago. Not that much now that we don't seem to get serious winters anymore. Only the odd shed-out skull from a cougar or a wolf kill. I too used to mount sheds on them but a guy only has so much room to put stuff like that especially when you have euros of bucks you kill as well.
Here is an old white set I stained and then mounted to a skull plate.

Here is another set also mounted to a skull plate.

I normally don't pack home small sheds as no one pays much for them anymore but there is the odd antler that makes it home to the pile because they are special. Here is an example. Who Is Your Daddy?
