We were on route home from grizz hunt , I didnt even know there WAS elk anywhere near there. Kid beside me says " I just saw a big bull elk" , I started laughing. Then I saw a cow , turned around and went back , we bugled up 6 of the damned things , one was an absolute monster. There's a few guys on here that should recognise something.

Hahaha, yes they'll talk, but only to tell you there's nothing there - practically like devastation flats.

Crocodile tears because the elk were eating them out of house and home, but no chance of having an elk season during the fall - all the "local hunters" wanted it in the winter. Makes sense, I'm sure all 20 of them made a real dent in the elk population.

There's news and then there's good news. Glad to get some good news.

New owner super kind , canadian to. Guessing a 'backer' for sure. One of Drinkals 'culls' I affectionately call the 'cocaine Cowboy' from Alberta 'mouthed up' he was going to buy it ( with what, empties?) , then they had a wreck , the whole crew and Drink quit , everyone of em left different directions not talking , BA HAAAAA ( sometimes it takes WAY TOO long for bullshit to come around and nip the shitters in the ass).....anyway , one of their best ( and possibly only good guy) went to Macmillan in the Yukon , the rest went on to avoid their 'dealers' for outstanding debt more likely than not. ( hmm , should I tell ya how I REALLY feel ??) lol...
I wonder why the elk do not grow bone around there? Ths is why I damned near shat myself seeing those bulls in the Yukon. Best I pulled was a 340" , NEVER again. And that is in an area where we kill MAYBE 2 bulls a season during the 10 day. 300" to 325 in the north east is (sadly) a super bull....dont get it. Meanwhile some moose grow 'off the chart' bone in the some area's.

Castlegar before the LEH got canned.....

Guess everybody has a different take on what a big bull elk is. You've shot/passed up how many bulls over 300? 320? 340? 360?

Two biggest bulls shot out of the WK and probably the province in the last 15 years, both came out of GOS in WK. Both well over 400.

My buddy has a bunch of 350+ bulls nailed to his tack shed all from GOS.

Would love to take you out one year to show you the fields of green, but it seems the attitude and the work ethic stinks.

Whats to say those super bulls were not created by the LEH hunt and then shot GOS after it changed or because it was adjacent to an LEH zone? Dont know otherwise just curious....

I remember handfull yrs back being face to face with a 180plus buck in the timber about 1 mile out of town while stalking an elk.
Also knew an outfitter between Ft Nelson and toad who claimed he saw " the absolute largest muley buck I ever saw" up on the hill near his camp. He originated in Montana and knew what a muley was to...the description was pretty BIG. Also some 180" whitetail blood around there to. Taped a couple vevet 170's , seen a 180 shed. Also found a 5X skull/rack 200 off the highway that is REAL heavy , BIG frame , went high 150's.

have found sheds of a 170 class buck a few years back way up the kechika on notellem mountian. we were rounding up some moss to sleep on and were quite surprised to find such a neat set of sheds in our sheep camp. have also heard stories of whitetails beening seen in the Yukon but not as many as mule deer.mule deer have been as far north as as Dawson.

Little off the beaten track on this thread regarding the WK GOS for elk my thoughts are its just a matter of time before the hunters illuminate many jean pool bulls as time goes on it will be harder to find a 400 class bull it will take time before we see this happen the WK elk will become the likes of most EK bulls average..

But as the boys from the" Wildlife Federation" say its all about hunter opportunity dont matter if the cows get bread by a spike or a 400 class bull, if theres calfs on the ground come spring time thats what counts .

The elk in the WK and the EK are the exact same elk - the genes are the same. The difference between the WK and the EK is vegetation and age.

You will never produce the same quality elk in terms of antler growth as the WK has way better vegetation, although tougher winters, then the EK.

Age in the WK GOS areas has always been high and it has always produced way bigger bulls than the EK. 400 bulls are one in a million even under the best conditions. For even the hardest of hunters to see or be near a 400 bulls is next to impossible. To even think a guy will find a 400 bull is right up there beside finding the next chadwick ram. With wolves on the landscape it will make things that much harder.

If you want more age in the EK get rid of the access, close it right down - you still won't have the huge bulls that the WK does. It has everything to do with food.

Husky7mm
03-11-2013, 12:10 PM
I thought the WK elk were transplants from Alberta. Thought the genes where slightly different, more like the manitoba Elk, more common to get crowning or extra points. If it is as you say all about the difference in feed, I am cools with that answer but I have to say the purcells are very simalar to the WK, I guess some may call that the WK. Officially where is the line?

Not the gene pool, the age class. The gene's are in them from the begining, just need to get some age to see the potential.
