I'm looking for a new scope for my savage 30-06 for the spring bear season. Can't spend a lot but can stretch to around $400. I'd like to go with a 3-9, 50mm for low light but not a deal breaker. So far I'm considering the Leupold vx-2, Burris full field, Redfield Revolution, and curious about Vortex.

Any input on any of these would be great. Also anything else I should look at while I'm at it

Thanks!

Buy the VX2 or look for a used VX3.

The vx-2 is an excellent scope. I can't justify spending bigger bucks on a scope, where even if I shoot three big game animals in a year, I only looked through the scope for probably 15 seconds max. Binnoculars and spotting scopes are a different story.

Grab yourself a vortex diamond back 4-12 with the bdc reticle. I think the are around $235. Best warranty in the industry, if you break the scope just hand it back to the store and they will give you a new one, don't even have to send it away! Can't beat that IMO.

I agree with Remington721 - Vortex are THE BEST bang for my hard earned, meager bucks....

Yup the vortex are tempting. I just want to be sure that they're a big enough upgrade over the stock bushnell that's on it now if I'm going to plunk down some cash

you can't go wrong with Leupold, Redfield ( which is a branch of Leupold ) or vortex. I would looking at 40mm over 50mm. It's smaller/ lighter weight. Which are big pluses to me, more so than the little bit extra light. IMO the 50mm is more of a benefit with 16x zoom and up.

What bushnell is on it now? Was it one of the package scopes? If so even bushnell elite 3200 will be way better. Package scopes are crap

Yup just the package scope. Cant even find a model on it but its 3-9 x 40mm Thats why I thought I'd be better off with a 50mm. Its pretty dim. Served me well for the two seasons I've had it but its time for an upgrade. Good to hear I can't go too far wrong though

Ya those are crap the problem is not that it's a 40mm it's just a cheap crap scope. A 3x9x40 in an of the brands you listed is going to be night and day better and brighter. I have a bushnell elite 3200 2x9x40 and a 6500 2.5-16x42 and Leupold vx3 3.5-10x40. They are all more than bright enough. The Leupold is a lot crisper and a better warranty. I have Burris Mtac on a AR and the glass on that is quite good not sure how it compares to the glass on the Fullfield though. I have never used a Vortex rifle scope but they are getting a very good following and apparently a very good warranty

Cool thanks for the help. I'll stop in to Italian when my new trigger comes in :-) and take a look at the Vortex and maybe a better Bushnell too. Theyre selling the Leupold for $600 so I'll have to cross that one off if I can't find it much cheaper or postpone the purchase if I decide I have to have it.

Gtk. Thanks for the heads up

sounds like the vx-2 has a lot of fans. Maybe I should hold off a bit and just spring for that. Have to go look through a couple of scopes and see

Look through a nikon monarch, for $400 it is a good scope as well. Would be my next choice for that price besides a vx11 or vx111.

What's so false about it? That's vortex's scope warranty

No it is not.

http://www.vortexcanada.net/vipwarranty.htm

You have to send in your stuff and wait 4-6weeks to see if it's fixed or replaced etc.

I have yet to see any store offer over the counter exchange warranty on Vortex products, lots of guys like to say they do but it is not the case.

take a look at the Vortex and maybe a better Bushnell too. You won't be disappointed by the Bushnell at all.

No it's not. The dealer can swap it but it's not Vortex's warranty that's up to the dealer

I'm looking around the same thing and here are my thoughts:

1) All this warranty talk is a bit silly - what do I care how soon I get my scope back if it breaks? I want a scope that DOES NOT break!

2) Leupold is good glass, but IMO overpriced. They are trading on that warranty reputation.

3) Bushnell glass is just junk to my eyes. I won't buy a Bushnell product as in every comparison I've done (including binoculars) it is outclassed by glass 1/2 the price - your eyes may tell you a different story.

4) At MSRP prices it is hard to beat the base level Zeiss Conquest at just under $500.

5) For whatever reason "real world" prices on the Vortex Diamondback scope are often 40% less than MSRP. Although the Zeiss glass looks better to my eye, I've seen $450 MSRP Vortex scopes for $220 in the store!

6) Nikon's glass seems to be really hit and miss to me. One scope is great, the other not so much.

Me.

Great info from you guys, thanks a lot!

I'm glad that what I'm not hearing is serious complaints about any of these scopes. Sounds like everyone has been pretty happy with their purchase. Thats what I was looking for the most, real world experience in the field

I love my Vortex Diamondback 3.5-10x50 with Dead Hold BDC. It's great on my Remington 700 30.06. I picked it up for $300.

Thought I'd update this in case anyone was interested. Went down to Italian sg to get the leupold vx2 and found that they had zeiss conquests in a 3-9 x40 on sale for $399. Apparently they're discontinued. Checked it out and liked that one a bit better so I sprang for that. Hustle down if you want one too
