I have been after this cat for 3 years ,he has made a career of killing sheep for some time know .Every time I would cut his tracks for the past two years I was always a day behind him & he would be headed in to very steep broken ram range .Until this winter the snow was to deep for him to run the steep ridges . The first time I chased him this winter we ran him up onto jade mountain above Chase through a maize of dead pine stacked 10 feet in the air .The cat was walking on blow down the whole way & the dogs just could 'nt make any time on him. The next time I ran him he was in great country, steep but good going .He was headed east & I knew there were two she cats were he was headed .One of the she cats had a kill on the same hill that Ken killled his book cat with me in jan.I wanted to catch him before he found one of the shes ,but was not so lucky .He walked up the same trail that Ken & I ran his cat up.(deep snow & easy walking)& hooked up with the she.We turned the dogs out they ran the cat about 500 yards strait up the mountain & treed. We folowed the trail up & hit an old grade , we were only 80 yards from the tree when I spoted the tom track going the other way in the dog trail .They had treed the she. My pup found the out track of the tom & screamed down the hill pulling the other dogs with her, they jumped him & treed . Everything went quiet for a bit while they tried to locate the tree ,the tom must have ran down the she cat track from the nite before because the dogs hit her track & cold trailed out of there .Free again.A few days later I had him boxed in a small patch of ground with trails around it .I kicked the dogs out & they jumped him in no time ,He ran about three miles down in to privite property & treed him behind someones house & the land owners were pissed at me .(they even phoned the COs on me) I had to leash up my dogs & walk away but not before I had some words with mr tom.Free yet again .The next time we found him he had walked down a main road with houses all over & crossed in to a very good place to run him in. Danny smith (bc hunter tv ) had come up to help film a show for Trigger effect tv That airs on wild tv in july. We spent a short time & boxed him in & turned out the dogs They ran him about 600 yards up hill & jumped him he turned & ran strait down the mountain in to a big canyon up the other side & hit the main road again ,he ran for 800 yards down the road with the dogs rite after him .I was panick stricken as they were headed for the highway & i could here cars blarring their horns as they chased the cat down the road.We raced back to the trucks on our sleds & grabed the dogs .The cat had jumped up a very steep bank that the dogs couldn't climb much to my relief.Ok im getting pissed.Free again. Then yesterday I was up in the same that place I had lost him in the backyard .He was in the same small box, this time he had killed a moose 20 feet from my trail & he was with a she cat again . She had left the kill & was headed for the privite property But the tom was still there .The dogs ran him around 250 yards in to a creek draw & treed .We drove our sleds over to the other side of the draw & they were only 300 feet from the road .We had 5 dogs at the tree & i could only hear my year old pup roaring, I thought the cat had killed all the other dogs & she was fighting it on the ground, the noise was unreal .When she finally shut up i could hear all the other dogs treeing .When I got down there the cat was about 100 feet up the tree. I think my pup was chewing on his tail when he climbed the tree.At last , free no more!

Awesome!!! Persistence really paid off for you :) That would have been a site to see, the little pup holding on to a cats tail while trying to climb!!! Quick question, do all cats typically hang around the same mountain side after they are chased off it by hounds all the time?? Thanks for sharing!

Toms have a home range of up to 100sq miles & thay make scratches or scent markers for she cats .They check there scratches every two or three week for a hot she. Wolves or hounds dont seem to make them move there home range .Only biger cougers can do that.

Boy, he's got a big melon on him. How old do you figure he is? Sounds like the pup is a keeper, huh?
And what did you hit it with, an RPG? Some taxidermist is gonna hate you this spring ;-)

Theas big interior cats all have big pumpkins ,but it takes a real lunker to make it in the book.
I dont know if this cat is old to get that big heavy ridge on the back of his skull to make book.
My gess is he is 5 or 6 years old by the look of his teeth.
I shot him with my 32 win ,the big hole started with the bullet then he must have hit a larg branch on his way down.
I wont be mounting him ,im looking for a realy big red cat with a white belly & I have been looking for this cat for a long time.
I do have a big tom rug that is red with a white belly.

Great story! as im anew hunter can you tell me what you do with the cats? do you bother with the hides?

The hides are generally tanned, rugged or full mounted. The skulls are bleached, and look cool in the man cave, and the meat is excellent. The dogs get the bones, and the ravens get the guts. There's no need to waste much of a lion.
