View Full Version : Magellan Explorist 500...any good?
I have been looking for a gps for a while now, not too deep but just starting to see whats out there. I want to use it for hunting, geocaching, and my wife and I would like to take it to Europe with us next year when we go. We will be Driving from Paris throughout Europe and ending in Italy, also visiting Greece, and England. I was thinking that we could probably get street maps for europe but not sure on this.
The Magellan Explorist 500 is on sale at Canadian tire right now for $200 I was thinking of picking up one for myself for Christmas.

It's probably a good unit. The antennas seem better than the older garmin's. However, the add says it has a rechargeable battery. What are you going to do when you are on a week or so hunt? Fine if you have a generator or some other means of recharging. On the other hand it might take batteries as well. London Drugs had the Explorist 100 on for $99.99 last week.
You can get a battery clip for it to allow it to take 3 AAA batteries

Rhys: Thanks for the tip. Don't mean to hijack but can you get those bat packs for the FRS radios to?? Most of them today are rechargeable. Thanks BCKID

why use a Magellan when you can use a Etrex :|

Care to expand on that? I have no experience with GPS and am trying to research which would be best for my needs.

well to be honest Ive never used a Magellan, but have used a Garmin Etrex alot and I know its an excellent unit and easy to use. The Magellan seems alot more complicated and SIMPLE is always good when it comes to electronics.
You cannot beat the Etrex Legend for a GPS, in my opinion. They sell for around $200

Check out GPS Central which are out of Calgary. Web site gpscentral.ca You can compare all differant models. The closest on to the Explrist 500 is the Garmin LegendCX which has a color screen. Both are good but I prefer the Garmins.
