Is calling deer during the rut as effective as it is with moose?

I've had decent results with soft buck grunts and light rattling for Blacktail. Never really had much luck with doe calls like the "Primos Can".

In the peak of the rut I have had bucks come in to the estrus can. I usually set up on fresh rubs and call during the morning and evening. Has worked but you need to be on your toes when those BT's come sneaking in. My nov 30th BT last year was shot at 15ft.

I actually heard my first real live deer call last night. Late at night some deer were in the garden. It Must have been a fawn looking for mama. The deer let out a low mew about a dozen times. It was truly a similar sound to my primos doe call. A couple friends have experience in using a call to stop or turn a deer you have jumped. In one situation the buck stopped running when my friend called, came back ten feet, and stood broadside trying to figure out who made the sound.

The most effective that I have seen over the years is the fawn distess call. It brings in does and bucks as they look to try to protect the young one that is in some sort of distress. It's very annoying to listen to, very much like a preditor call of a wounded rabbit. But it works when all the other calls fail !
