Dana - I've been looking at numerous pics of the world record california bighorn. The sheep in your pics is awful damn close. As I said before - amazing animal! Any guesses on what he would score?

Great photos dana. I hope that ram spreads his genes into areas that bc hunters can have a chance to hunt. Just incredible!!!!

I'm not good on field judging sheep. I only know 'small', 'medium', 'large' and 'extra large'. ;) I'm sure there are some that might be able to throw out a better educated guess. I was thinking 'Booner' when I saw him. 180 is the min for the B&C. Not sure how much above that line he'd go.

B&C doesn't differentiate between Cali's and Rocky's - seems a bit of a disservice to the subspecies. My understanding is a 160 Cali is exceptional everywhere but Kamloops..:-D Not sure if those sheep have Rocky genes mixed in or not - some people speculate they might. If my information is correct, the biggest Cali ever was around 190. The ram my hunting partner killed this year was just over 170. The ram in your pics has to be well north of 180. Not many full curl Cali's out there - would love to hear what the knowledgeable sheep guys have to say.

The B&C has to label them the same just because there is no way to know a Rocky from a Cali other than location and many locations the two subspecies are rather close to each other. Just look at Spences versus the rest of the Fraser as an example. I seem to recall someone mentioned the Chase herd were Rockys. That is pretty dang close to the Mt. Paul Herd which could easily mingle with the Tranquille Herd if they wanted too. My late father-in-law told me when he was a young man he lived in the Loops and one night he took a shortcut through an alley downtown only to meet a big ol' ram coming straight at him. Not what you would expect to meet in a dark alley late at night. :)

As for your comments about full curl Calis, I see plenty of them in the Loops. Many are broomed on one side and meet the full-curl requirements on the other side. I think that 'What If?' had the potential to be like that 193 ram you posted up if he had of stayed clean on both sides. As for the big heavy ram in these pics, his mass measurements probably make up a lot of ground that he lost when he broomed.

Great comments, Dana. I agree with you on "What If". I don't expect the heavy ram in your pics will be shot in the draw area (but you never know). Will be interesting to know if anyone ever gets a chance to put a tape to him. He sure looks amazing in your pictures. Great threads you've posted on that herd. Thanks!!

I personally can not see why the Tranquille herd would not mix with the Kamloops Lake herd, especially during the rut. I can see a ram one weekend on Ord and then the next weekend see the same ram on the Red Lake Rd. Quite the distance in a short timeframe. Not that far to then move into the draw unit. What would be sweet is to have the Special Sheep Draw and focus on Kamloops with it. If you had that timeframe, I'm sure a real slug could be found.

Great thread for sure. I certainly have the impression that the Spences Bridge genetics have migrated a fair distance from the orig transplant location. Seems to me that in recent yeras some rather large rams have been sighted in areas that traditionally never had sheep, let alone crankers. Also seems to me that the overall trophy quality of the Kamloops Lake herd amongst others has been increasing????

How about the piss cutters from Chase and Chasm???

It is too bad that the Cali genetics could not be kept pure.

Open for feedback or corrections.

Hard to get crankers in Chasm, as "The Syndicate" culls them out for cash every time they get too big.

What would be sweet is to have the Special Sheep Draw and focus on Kamloops with itThe K Lake LEH could produce some great rams , but lots of guys don't do the do to get them.

I seem to recall someone mentioned the Chase herd were Rockys. 40 Rockies were put there back in '27. a few years later a few were taken over to Adams Lake , don't hear much about those anymore.

Something that helps mix up the blood at Mt Paul and maybe Kamloops , was the release of a Rocky ram there, from the wildlife park.

Not sure how many guys know , but if you want some light reading about bighorns , the BC Gov has a couple of papers on their site
'The Status of California Bighorn Sheep' and 'The status of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep'
Also 'The Status of Thinhorn Sheep' for those that lean that way.

Guess I should make that 'had'. Can't find them but they are on the WAFWA site , and the WSSoBC site? I hope?

So you don't consider that outfitter ram that was killed this past season in Chasm a Cranker????? :) :)
