Hello all. I'm hoping I can tap into the collective knowledge here.
My father in law (68 yrs old) and my brother in law (34 years old) are my two primary hunting partners here in Eastern Ontario. We pursue wild turkey together in the spring and hunt whitetail deer in the fall. For years, my father in law has talked about how his "dream hunt" is to pursue elk "out west" on horseback. I figure there is no time like the present and am in the initial stages of putting that trip together.
If I were going myself I would probably want to backpack into the most remote area going in search of elk - but given that my father in law is 68 yrs old, that's not happening. I'm typically not keen on guided hunts, but this would be the exception as it truly would be a "once in a lifetime" occasion for the three of us to have this opportunity.
So what I am looking for is:
1) best area of BC for a backcountry elk hunt (horseback)
2) best portion of the hunting season to go in
3) suggestions of "top notch" guiding services. We don't have an unlimited budget, but to get quality you have to pay. Not interested in endless "frills", just a rock solid outfitting group with a great reputation of providing quality experiences
Last note - I understand fully that a guided hunt is no guarantee of a kill. We would be looking for the experience - a kill would simply be "icing on the cake".
Thanks for any information you can provide.
