I'm sure many of you are aware but I was surprised to hear (but it makes sense) this past spring that rising wolf populations are having an effect on bear populations.

Im told that roving packs of hungry wolves dig hibernating bears, both black and grizzly out of their dens to dine on.

If you think about it, a hungry pack of wolves is a pretty formidable force, and a bear, cornered, weakened, and not at the top of its senses would be no match.

Anyhoo it was new news to me and I found it fascinating so hopefully it's new news for some of you guys and gals as well

There are packs of wolves on the Island that specialize in bears. Hope they don't eat a Spirit bear! The Horror!

Definitely true, I've seen lots of piles of wolf shit with BB hair in it. I wonder if they target sows and cubs, young bears or bears in general? A groggy bear makes an easy target!

I also heard that they're targeting Kermode bears because they're easier to see, so Greenpeace is funding some helicopter gunning of the wolves to save the kermode bears.

Happens more often than one would think. I came across wolves doing it to a bear on a creek bank on our north place while checking on stock one year. Shot two of the wolves. The rest came back two nites later to finish their meal. Bios at F&G told me that it occurs more when snow packs are down making easier access to the bears.

Myself and client watched two wolves try to steal a cub from a griz sow once,I would have never guessed it. they were relentless for maybe a full half hr. No trees as it was right up in a slide where we hunt sheep.
We shot an 8 ft grizz near camp once and a pack cleaned it up over night , they like the 'mtn pork' for sure.

Naaah, they wouldn't do that. They're harmless beautiful forest creatures, in harmony with the environment. They spend all their time looking majestic for photos. Dontcha know nothin?

Personally never seen wolves on bears, but once while on the Dempster Highway I witnessed a decent sized Grizzly chasing a wolf across the tundra. The wolf would run 100 yds ahead and wait for the bear to close the gap to 50yds, then run up further and wait some more... was kinda comical. They ran like that until they disappeared over the horizon, which was a long long way.

I heard that island wolves will tree a bear and take turns keeping it up there util it is tired and weak, then, dinner is served. That must take days and days tho.
