I walk my dogs along the dyke at the Fraser river in Rosedale every day. On the drive to the river, I cross a small slew, which usually holds a few mallards in it. On at least a half dozen occassions I have noticed a few white ducks mixed in with the mallards, but they have always been to far away to identify. the last few days, they have been right beside the road, and I have had a good look at these ducks. The two drakes are about 90% white, with the typical green mallard head, and the hen is absolutely white 100%, but they are always with normal mallards, so my question is--what the hell am i seeing here? Could it be mallards that have cross bred with a domestic duck, or are there albino mallards:confused: , because they are definatly mallards. i will try to take my camera today and get a few pics, but has anyone else seen this??

there have been a number of "blondes' taken i think 303 Brit. got one this year. there is deffinately albinism in Mallards I dont think a domestic cross would be out of the question either to bad you didnt get pix but heres some I found I would love a crack at the lard/pinny cross in the second bunch of pix

Back in MB I have seen white mallards on a couple occasions, didn't get up close and 'personal' enough to see if they had pink eyes to be true albinos but definitely pretty much white.

An albino would be all white, since a true albino lacks any pigment. An animal that has a certain amount of pigment missing is referred to as a piebald http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piebald

I would guess that more than likely what you are seeing is a wild/ domestic cross, or if its a piebald specimin it would be a nice thing to have on a wall!!!

Some pics may make it easier to identify.

lol, thats a good theory, however I live smack dab in the middle of the Bible Belt out here, and i'm pretty sure that any peroxide packin, non conformist ducks would be shunned by the local population, which doesn't seem to be the case :)

I love the name game, the actuall deffinition of piebald (And yes I use the term for spotted deer etc to) is white with BLACK spots. A skewbald is white with any other color spots except black. again I'm as guilty as the next when it comes to miss use just find it amusing how we change the deffination of words so suit. Whatever you have there edgy its cool hope you can get pix to post. :)

Foxton is correct I clipped one this year, and I spotted another one today. I almost ended up in the estuary when I did the double take driving along dyke rd.

When it comes to ducks the proper term is albino lacking all pigment or leucism lacking some pigment.

Quit shoot'n the neighbors pets!!! LOL  Seriously though, if those are crossbred with domestics, we should try to take 'em down whenever possible.

theres deffinatly some mallard in a couple of them but id say the pure white one is a domestic bird, probably a mallard domestic cross, interesting bird none the less

Nice look'n ducks, actually. I wonder what a biologist would say about them, and if they would be bad for the wild stock. :?

There is a domestic breed called Rouen that look like a mallard. They will breed with the white ducks.

You don't mention if they fly. They're most likely a Peking/mallard cross. I've hunted ducks for 35 years. Never heard anyone ever mention an albino Mallard let alone see multitudes of them. Have you or your parents ever experimented with LSD?

The white duck is an oversized call duck, the other two are also large call ducks the colour pattern is called snowy. I raised and showed domestic ducks and poultry for years.
