Backpack hunting, it's not just about killing something.

I've been sheep hunting for a few years now in one area with no success. Atleast in the terms of dropping a ram, but hunting can still be great even when you don't shoot something. It's a great area and I'll keep going back till I get one. I just thought I would post some pics to show what I mean. Feel free to add some interesting pics of yours showing why you enjoy hunting even without filling a tag. It's the off season anyway, and I hate talking about hockey.

Hiked up out of the very wet bushy valley and cloud into the warm sunshine. I was very glad I just bought my bino chest pack from Jaret Owens of Alaska Guide Creations. It gives great, quiet protection and access to binos, rangefinder, headlamp, maps, etc. Keeps everything clean and dry and is comfortable to wear. I've tried other bino packs, but this one I kept.

Great photos :) I have been waiting awhile for this thread ;) :D I agree with you, majority of the time it is about the hunt and how far you can push yourself out of your comfort zone physically and mentally, It is a great added bonus when you can take a trophy animal!! Hahahaha, you might get some of the locals hot and bothered over this. The one ram on the left in the first pic looks legal - might just be the shadow but usually when they turn up that far they cut the mustard.

There was 2 good old rams but they were broomed off. This was on the first day I was up there.

Totally agree! That spot was awesome! We stayed there for about 5 hours I think. We could see so much country, it wasn't worth going anywhere else. That ground was so soft, we could walk on it in bare feet. I learnt the hard way to look after my feet up there. I now use mirrino wool socks and because of my high arch, I use Birkenstock inserts with sheep skin liners for great support and cushioning. I could go all week with this combo and never had sore feet. I use to think hiking and sore feet were just normal.

Nice pic!! This has got to be one of the best ways of hunting. With views like this, I forget that I'm hunting sometimes! Looks like you guys would be competition for me if you were in my area.:)

Thanks for that GREAT thread link, SSS! Add me to the list of NUTBARS! :mrgreen: I'm so pumped to go backpacking again! I get so excited up there I have to take a couple Gravol just to get a few hours of sleep the first night on a backpacking hunt. When I just drive through some area where there are alpine peaks I can barely watch the road. My family is always yelling at me to watch the road, because I'm watching and thinking about hiking and that feeling you're talking about SSS.
Man, I got it bad. Maybe I need a Doc or a shrink! :?

They are robins. I found the nest when they were eggs and went back almost every week til they flew, pretty cool. If they lay there again I am going to put a trail camera on them I think.

Very cool picture but I'd like to know the circumstances in taking such shot!!!

I saw her looking at me when I was going by at a fairly busy cat crossing. Her head was up though, the ear had stood out being outlined by the light behind her. When I stopped to look at her she laid down. She was sunbathing and it was early spring so probably felt pretty nice and didn't want to move !
She didn't move until I was about 10 yards away.

What a great trend!! I couldn't agree more,having a pack on my back is a pure addiction, the scenery of the creeks, lakes, mountains, all the odd critters, bugs, rocks, trees, it's amazing the things you will find if you throw on a pack, weather it's for a Day or 2, or its a couple week trip. I made my first goat hunt when I was 8 years old, and since then I can only remember a couple years that I didn't make it on a mountain for at least a few days.

In the last 20 years, I can only count a handful of harvested animals on these pack trips, ( only goats, on sheep im 0 for 3 :-( ). I think "hunting", is just my excuse to get out for a trip or 3 every year! Lol, harvesting a animal is just icing on the cake!

Too many place the emphasis of success on whether a kill has been made.
IMO that's one of the smaller, less important points of a hunt.

Yeah that's my dad, last fall at 61 years old. We spent 8 days backpacking for sheep, put on over 60 kms with 50-60lb packs. In 8 days we seen 4 G bears, but no sheep. Lookin forward to new area and scenery this fall, with the same huntin partner!!

That's great! He sounds like he's in better shape still then most half his age. I hope I can still hike like that in my 60s, which is coming quick. :? Keep it up!

Those blisters sure look like a great part of hunting. Ouch! Been there, done that. I'm glad I finally figured out how to have comfortable feet this last season. Hey, some of us are slow learners.
Here's a few more pics from my sheep hunting this last season. Some of those places you guys have to camp look kinda rough. This is the one I found, really rough'n it. lol
Level bed of soft rotten log under the tent, firewood that some nice guy left, table, bear alarm around camp, and creek just 20 feet away. Oh ya, we even had a solar shower bag set up! Hey, what can I say. Why not. :mrgreen:

Been there done that with my dad. He had a heart attack 10 years ago while on a horseback hunt with my brother and I in the Chilcotin. Here's a picture of some of his sucess post-heart attack.

He shot this bull in an absolute hell hole. Not the place where someone with a heart condition would want to kill a moose but I told him to shoot and my son and I would worry about getting it out of there. My son was only 12 at the time but was already quite the pack mule. I think he did 9 trips that day with a loaded pack.

Wish I could get back in the high country this year, but I have my doubts. Having shot knees when you're 30 years old is a tough pill to swallow.

I know your pain. Im only 32 and have a bad knee from a snowmobile crash when I was a teen, it's ok going up hill, but side hilling and down hill are the killers for me. A mix of Advil and Tylenol usually makes it bearable tho, and a shot of 151 with orange tea at night before bed and by morning I'm a 100%.
the day I can't climb into our amazing mountains, is the day.... Well I just don't wanna see that day put it that way lol

I put together yet another list of gear to guy for the upcoming season, I've been itching to get out. Last year was my first pack hunt, my dad's as well for goat. We saw one great Billy, and gorgeous country. We weren't able to get that billy but I'll be back this year with more time off work and a better idea of what to expect. Then a couple weeks later we are planning a Pack hunt for Caribou and Sheep. And then our annual 2 week moose hunt where we will be continuing to look for sheep and caribou. We have a long and busy season ahead of us, my dad found out he is sick and doesn't know how long he can keep hunting so we have to get him his first goat, and caribou. The time with him is worth it. We are new to back country pack hunt but we are addicted.

Awesome pics everyone, thanks to all those who posted. I grew up in Canmore, right in the heart of the rockies. This thread is sure making me miss that place. I've been backpack camping since long before I started hunting, I haven't been on a backpack hunt yet but looking forwards to combining those two loves soon!
