This weekend was the best waterfowl weekends of the 2012-2013 for me. Big Boar and Digger Dogger came over from the mainland after over a month of trying to plan something to get after seaducks. Weather plays a big role where i hunt these buggers, and we couldnt seem to make it happen. Finally early last week i said, come thrusday night and plan to be here for 5 days and we should be able to get out at least a few times and hopefully get a few birds. Bring lots of shells, these things arent easy to hit and when you do hit them, there are usually require multiple follow up shots. Well they brought lots of shells and its a good ting they did...
Well the weather gods were with us and we got out twice (friday and today, i had to work all day saturday) and they put some beauties face down into the salt chuck. Friday was pretty slow and DEAD calm, but we managed some beauty long tails, and some nice white wings and a surf. Missed a few opporunites at a harli and a few barrows Ge.
Today was much different and we had well over 100 scoters throughout the morning light and decoy within 25 yards most of the morning. We werent really after them except for prime specimens so almost all of them got free passes. We dropped a beauty double sprig squaw and a really nice hen right off the bat. Shortly after a gorgoues bull Harliquien banked right in and folded up! A couple woohoo's and some slap fives, we disconnected the anchor and went and picked him up. Gorgoues bird. After that there were a few.... missed opportunites at some stud drake harlis through out the morning and i (along with them) were starting to wonder if they were going to have to paper, scissor rock for the harli. Well at the last few minutes of the hunt a drake and hen came along and they folded up the drake. Ending what was one of the most fun weekends of killing ducks ive ever had.
I never fired a shot the entire weekend(didnt even bring a gun today) and it was an absolute blast to take these guys out.
