When I was out yesterday checking out possible places to shed hunt I came across these big horns if this ram was in a region for GOS the one ram in the center of this picture is he legal now if in a GOS for full curl rams ??? if not will he be legal later on this fall when hunting season opens ????.

I am no sheep hunter by far I am putting myself to a test LOL I say no this ram is not legal to take right now if the season was open for full curl maybe latter on this year he will be a legal ram ???? one thing I don't know is will this ram grow more inches or so in the next 9 months and if so how much longer will his horns be with this new growth ???? bottom line will he be a shooter come this fall ????.

Hi Wayne,
I'm no expert either, but I'd say if he doesn't broom he could be a squeeker this fall.

looks like the angle you took the photo from is looking up at him? Making him look bigger then he is. If the picture is from below him and his other sides not any longer he's not legal right now but might be close for next year?

Pretty good broadside look there and I think he is a squeaker now. Probably would pass as too close to call. Should be good next season unless he knocks some off.

Tough to tell from that angle for right now. Real squeeker if he is, definately pass on him.

Tough to tell how old he it too from the photos too. If he was a 5-6 year old he would easily put on 1.5inch growth ring this year. If he has poor genetics and is an older sheep he may only put on 1cm that may make him a squeeker. The problem is his horns are still very lamb tipped and it would not take much for him to broom off an inch.

If I was a betting man I would say he will grow enough to be legal but will probably broom off a certain amount to still have him just a squeeker if at all. Look for him in the fall of 2014.

x2 what BHB says.......

theres always a few of them around that area in the fall........just wish more of them would do some damn brooming before the itchy trigger finger boys get to them.

Jel tell me as for others why you would take this sheep if it was open in a management region for GOS ??? have I missed something ???? what I see is that the horn tips are about one inch short from the bottom of the eye to the center of the nose..

Iffy at best Wayne. If you look at the regs:

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj313/Heliox18/Hunting/sheephornlegalsize.jpg

The horn tip when viewed sqaurely from the side must break the line that runs from the centre of the nostrils back to the rear horn base.
The pic you have is a "Donut" ram, and his tips come in under his eye, even when viewed from below. A real buster comes out further towards the nose before curling up, so this is no trophy by any means. Legal? Hmmm...
You can see his left horn base under the right one, which makes me believe he'll look even smaller when viewed squarely from the side. Only time will tell, but you have to be 110% certain on a sheep..... is this a GOS area?
You might have a shot at it this fall.....it's possible, sure, but he's curving back, and that cuts the angle. If in doubt, never shoot, esp with Sheep.

And FYI: I have never shot a sheep, but I have watched and photographed hundreds, trying to guess legality. There are many more people on here much more qualified than I to tell you more.

If you can't afford it I guess but what's the fine for shooting a short ram? Under 500! Well that's what it was in 2002

Your a clown! Who cares what the cost of the fine is how about wasting a ram just because your to lazy to take the proper time to judge wether he's legal or not! ******s like you give ethical hunters a bad name!!!

Whats this mean ??? does it mean you shot a ram that was illegal in 2002 and got under a 500 dollar fine ???? if true we don't need people like you on this hunting forum ..

Squeaker at best on that angle, and its not a good angle so almost certainly not legal. Don't feed the trolls.

I'd kill him, he's legal on his other side, I know for a fact.

If you are right and you can hunt this area in GOS I hope you can get him this fall good luck..
